As he showed in 2022 and again last year, Christian
Wahl likes nothing better than heavy air and an
absence of thermals, the kind of conditions that make
him almost untouchable and in which Lake Geneva
can bring even the fastest of boats to a grinding halt.
“I can’t see any other outcome if winds are very light
once again,” said Yann Pétremand, the president of
the Bol d’Or Organizing Committee. “I’m hoping
for more wind this time, if only for the sake of the
rest of the field, who have had it tough since 2019.”
The gods of the lake have failed to smile upon
the BOM in recent years. Who can forget the
raging storm that hit the 2019 race and which
thankfully caused nothing more than material
damage? A year later, the Covid pandemic led
to the Bol d’Or Mirabaud being cancelled for
the first time in its long history. Then came
three straight years of snail-paced racing.
“With all these things coming one after another
we’ve seen participation drop off,” explained
Pétremand. “In response, we’ve created two new
Bols to breathe new life into the event: the Bol de
Basalte and the Bol de Carbone. The former is
awarded to the fastest of the displacement multihulls.
Quite a few of these boats stopped coming because
the D35s were so prevalent and dominant that it
killed the suspense a little bit. The Bol de Carbone
is presented to the first foiler over the line, whatever
the type. Sailing is developing and it makes sense for
us to be the first to create a category like this, with
no distinction between monohulls and multihulls.”
