“ECC has helped me achieve more than I ever
imagined. Surrounding myself with the positive,
great people of ECC made me believe in myself
more each semester.
Being allowed to work at my own pace, taking classes
asynchronously, having accommodations available if
needed, and having thoughtful and caring professors
who were ecstatic over my enthusiasm for school
made this adventure what it was for me — a true
testament to the power education can have on
someone’s life.”

“I first enrolled at ECC in the fall of 2020, right after
graduating high school. The pandemic hit me and
my class hard and since my plans to attend a fouryear
college weren’t working out, I decided to make
a difference right away by taking classes at ECC and
becoming an emergency medical technician with the
help of ECC’s ICAPS Program.
When I was ready to advance my career to become a
nurse, I knew just where to look. ECC has been there
for me every step of the way.”

Honors and Distinctions
Accelerate College
A dual-credit program whereby high school-age students enroll full time at Elgin Community
College and complete college courses. Students fulfill requirements for a high school diploma
as well as an associate transfer degree simultaneously.
Honors and High Honors
Graduates who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 to 4.0 for a degree or
certificate receive their diplomas with high honors, while those achieving a cumulative grade
point average of 3.0 to 3.49 receive their diplomas with honors.
Honors Program Achiever
Students receive the Honors Program Achiever designation after completing at least three
honors courses and 16 hours of leadership and service experiences. Additionally, they
assembled an Honors Capstone Portfolio and have maintained a minimum 3.25 GPA.
Honors Program Graduate
Students receive the Honors Program Graduate designation after completing at least five
honors courses and 24 hours of leadership and service experiences. Additionally, they
assembled an Honors Capstone Portfolio and have maintained a minimum 3.25 GPA.
Mu Alpha Theta
A national two-year college mathematics honor society dedicated to inspiring keen interest in
mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of
mathematics in two-year college students.
Phi Theta Kappa
An international honor society which recognizes and encourages the academic achievement
of two-year college students and provides opportunities for individual growth through
participation in honors, leadership, service, and fellowship programming.

Academic Regalia
Mace
Traditionally carried in procession and mounted on stage whenever degrees are
granted or when the faculty assembles in formal academic dress, our mace was
designed and created by Joel Peck, professor of art history, David Reich, professor
of welding, and Howard Russo, professor emeritus of visual arts. It was funded by
the Elgin Community College Faculty Association as a gift to ECC President David
Sam in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the college in 2010.
Lamp of Knowledge
Featured on the college’s official college seal and shown on stage during
commencement, the lamp symbolizes the illumination of the mind through
scholarly pursuits. It is an indicator of intellectual and spiritual insight. Our
lamp was made by Howard Russo, professor emeritus of visual arts. Former
Dean David Broad and Professor Emeritus E. Max von Isser were instrumental
in establishing the lamp of knowledge in the college’s seal and heraldry.

Academic Dress
Consists of three items: the gown, the hood, and the Oxford cap, or mortarboard. Basic gowns have full sleeves. Bachelor’s
gowns have long pointed sleeves. A master’s gown has sleeves with oblong panels. A doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves
with three horizontal bars. An associate’s hood has a colored lining but no trim. A bachelor’s hood is trimmed with a narrow
velvet band. A master’s hood is longer and trimmed. A doctor’s hood has a rounded base and is trimmed with a velvet
border. The Oxford cap is black with a long tassel. Doctors wear a gold tassel.
