LE MARS BRACES FOR ANOTHER
WINTER STORM
BY TOM LAWRENCE
Staff writer
LE MARS — Scott Kneip and his
team are like a lot of Iowans: They watch
the weather all winter.
It’s just practical, given the propensity
for blizzards, winter storms and
the accompanying snow, bitter cold
and high winds. The impending storm
due to hit Plymouth County today
(Wednesday) won’t catch them by surprise,
said Kneip, the Le Mars Public
Works Department’s street supervisor.
“During the winter, we are always
keeping an eye on the weather. Our goal
is to be out there as soon as it starts to
prevent accidents if possible and make
sure people can get to and from their
home safely,” Kneip told the Le Mars
Sentinel on Tuesday morning as the
forecast grew more ominous by the
hour.
Le Mars is in a winter storm warning
from noon today until midday Thursday,
with the possibility of 6 to 9 inches
of snow. The National Weather Service
predicts an 80 percent chance of snow
this afternoon, a 95 percent chance of
snow tonight, and a 100 percent chance
of snow after midnight.
That’s on top of the around 3 feet that
already have fallen this winter.
National Weather Service meteorologist
Jen Hacker, who is stationed at
Sioux Falls, South Dakota, said there is
no weather observer in Le Mars.
“The nearest locations for which we
have snowfall data are near Remsen
(33.2 inches) and Orange City (38.7
inches),” Hacker said.
High winds and bitter cold are expected
to accompany the snow. Kneip and
his team know the drill.
“Every snow is different, so we try to
plan accordingly. The guys always work
downtown businesses for Small
Business Saturday shopping.
Now in 2022, more events
have been added.
“We’re hoping to add a little
something new each year, grow
it just a bit more and get more
LE MARS — The Community
Foundation of
Greater Plymouth County
has made its 2022 allocation
of funds to county organizations
Board members are Kelly
Keith Bohle, Bev Fagan,
Jenny Hartman-Mendoza,
Mike Kooistra, Mary
Korthas, Ashley Schuttpelz
and Colleen Westergard.
Nashleanas, an executive
board member, explained
how the grant money is allocated.
“We have an executive
board and we have a grant
board. The grant board
meets once a year. They
have 3-4 weeks to review the
applications and go through
all the grants. If they have any
questions, they reach out to
the organizations and ask
those questions, and then we
great group of guys and always do what
it takes to get the job done. We have six
trucks that go out and plow their routes.
These guys need to eat and sleep, too, so
we can do our job safely. We can’t be out
there 24/7 but do our best.”
Kneip said the amount of sand and
salt available to spread on city streets to
reduce slippery conditions is “looking
good for what we have on hand.”
He said city crews follow a regular
pattern in removing snow.
“On an average snow, it will take each
truck to plow their entire route about
four hours,” he said. “So, depending on
where their routes start, the people on
