the organizations and ask
those questions, and then we
met and reviewed the information
on organized with
“The grant board ranks
LE MARS — A Thanksgiving
tradition continues in
Le Mars with a Thanksgiving
Celebration dinner at Rejoice
Community Church.
The church offers a fu l dinner
for those who wish to dinein,
have a carryout, or have a
dinner delivered.
This year marks the 18th
annual Thanksgiving Banquet
at the church at 1320 Third
Ave. S.E.
There is no charge for the
meal, however a free wi l donation
wi l be accepted.
The meal includes turkey
and dressing, mashed potatoes
and gravy, corn, cranberry
sauce and an assortment of pies
and desserts.
The committee organizing
this year’s dinner is Margaret
Catton, Kent Vande Weerd
and Beth Campbe l, with Nick
Gengler coordinating the
deliveries.
To order a delivery, call
Cathy at the church office,
548-4430 Monday and Tuesday,
and no later than 2 p.m.,
Wednesday, Nov. 23, as delivery
routes are mapped out that
day.
“Maggie is our organizer. I
have been very busy cooking
turkeys, to be honest with you,”
Vande Weerd said Thursday.
“A couple weeks ago I did
just shy of 10 turkeys. Last Saturday
I did 34 turkeys. That’s
a lot of birds to manhandle,”
he said.
Over the weekend, he
planned to cook a dozen turkeys
Friday night and finish up
on Saturday with 16-18.
Last year the group prepared
72-74 turkeys. However, they
did have leftovers.
“I’m expecting our numbers
to go up a little bit over what we
served last year,” he explained.
“Here at Rejoice we partner
with the Siouxland Food
Bank with our food pantry
and we’ve seen an increase in
demand there, so I’m guessing
our count for the dinner will
go up.”
He’s hopeful the numbers
for food items are a l in place.
This is Vande Weerd’ second
year of cooking turkeys.
He explained that in the past
when Adri Ruisch was sti l with
Rejoice, she and her husband,
Gene, would spend a day at the
church with the two of them,
cooking, cooling and cleaning
the birds, and putting the meat
away.
“When I cooked the turkeys
last week, I had two gals
and two couples there jus to
debone the birds. They had 34
turkeys done in an hour and a
half,” he said.
Volunteers wi l be on hand
Wednesday to set up for serving
and carryout lines, and get
a l things in proper order.
“I’ l get there early at 6 a.m.,
Thursday morning, to start
heating a l the food for serving.
We have to make the potatoes,
make the dressing, there wi l be
a lot of work done in about five
hours,” he said.
As always, the meal is free of
charge, although donations are
welcome.
“If you need a meal, come
on in and we wi l be more than
happy to serve you,” he said.
“To see an event like this come
together, and free available to
anyone is a blessing.”
An undertaking such as this
would not be possible without
a number of volunteers, not
only from the church bu the
community.
“We have wi ling volunteers.
We have people volunteer to
come help us that aren’t even
members of our church,” he
continued. “I am so grateful
for that, just for the fact that
the word ‘community’ is in our
church name for a reason, it’s
Rejoice Community Church.”
“Reaching ou to the community,
helping in the community
and being a part of
the community is, like I said,
it’s what we do It’s a labor of
love, put i that way,” he said
in conclusion.
Rejoice again offers free Thanksgiving meal
LE MARS — Plymouth
County residents went to the
local, state and national candidates.
Of the county’s 18,270 registered
percent cas their ballots in the
2022 election, either at the 11
we thought it would be,” said
Cheri Nitzschke, deputy auditor.
Po ls were open from 7 a.m. to
8 p.m. on Election Day.
This year there were 2,591
absentee ba lots cast, according
to Jan Hoffman, deputy auditor.
“In a general election, the
absentee ballot counts have
to roll back into the precinct
totals,” she explained.
She added it was a good turnout
of voters for a midterm election
cycle.
Precinct results are brought
to the auditor’s office on election
night by machine by poll
workers. Hoffman said the last
precinct runner to return the
machine came at 8:40 p.m.
of Le Mars shared her thoughts
with veterans and their families
She said, “I had the privilege
“I walked for over an hour
among the white crosses. Over
167,000 young men from the
United States and Canada and
Great Britain died on D Day,
June 6, 1944.
“On the beach, I looked up and
MARCUS — The Industrial
Technology program at
Marcus Meriden Cleghorn
Remsen Union (MMCRU)
was selected for a $40,000
STEM (Science Technology
Engineering and Math) Best
High Demand award in 2023.
The school district has
previously won a STEM Best
award and STEM educator
of the year award to Matt
Hansen, one of the Industrial
Technology teachers, in
2020.
This year’s funds will be
used to purchase a 2023
Haas Super Mini Mi l a program
to teach students how
to program CNC (computerized
numerical controls)
equipment.
“There is not a component
in your life that is not
impacted by a machinist,”
said Hansen.
Machinists operate lathe
and milling machines,
reviews designs and make
sure precise measurements
are done for cutting or shaping.
In northwest Iowa,
MMCRU has the only
machining program. The
program is 100 percent
backed by local businesses,
including Wetherell Manufacturing
out of Cleghorn.
“We’ve had people trained
in three different areas,
machinists, welders and
technical trade-draftsman
or 3D designers,” said Todd
Wetherell, general manager.
“There are we l rounded
students coming out of Marcus.”
Hansen said finding
machinists is hard.
“A l businesses are looking
for help, so a ski led trade of
any kind is in high demand,”
said Wetherell. “Labor in
general is short and if we can
teach these kids in school
there are good paying jobs
close to home … it’s just a
benefi to our little communities.”
MORROW WINS STATE TITLE
WINTER STORM
BY TOM LAWRENCE
Sta f writer
LE MARS — Scott Kneip and his
team are like a lot of Iowans: They watch
the weather a l winter.
It’s just practical, given the propensity
for blizzards, winter storms and
the accompanying snow, bitter cold
and high winds. The impending storm
due to hit Plymouth County today
(Wednesday) won’t catch them by surprise,
said Kneip, the Le Mars Public
Works Department’s street supervisor.
“During the winter, we are always
keeping an eye on the weather. Our goal
is to be ou there a soon as it starts to
prevent accidents if possible and make
sure people can ge to and from their
home safely,” Kneip told the Le Mars
Sentinel on Tuesday morning as the
forecast grew more ominous by the
hour.
Le Mars is in a winter storm warning
from noon today until midday Thursday,
with the possibility of 6 to 9 inches
of snow. The National Weather Service
predicts an 80 percent chance of snow
this afternoon, a 95 percent chance of
snow tonight, and a 100 percent chance
of snow after midnight.
That’s on top of the around 3 feet that
already have fa len this winter.
National Weather Service meteorologist
Jen Hacker, who is stationed at
Sioux Fa ls, South Dakota, said there is
no weather observer in Le Mars.
“The nearest locations for which we
have snowfall data are near Remsen
(33.2 inches) and Orange City (38.7
inches),” Hacker said.
High winds and bitter cold are expected
to accompany the snow. Kneip and
his team know the dri l.
“Every snow is different, so we try to
plan accordingly. The guys always work
their normal eight-hour shift but sometimes
are called in th early-morning
hours or are asked to stay late so we can
ge the job done,” he said. “They are a
great group of guys and always do what
it takes to get the job done. We have six
trucks that go out and plow their routes.
These guys need to eat and sleep, too, so
we can do our job safely. We can’t be out
there 24/7 but do our best.”
Kneip said the amount of sand and
salt available to spread on city streets to
reduce slippery conditions is “looking
good for what we have on hand.”
He said city crews follow a regular
pattern in removing snow.
“On an average snow, it wi l take each
truck to plow their entire route about
four hours,” he said. “So, depending on
where their route start, the people on
the end of that route might not see their
street plowed right away. After the day
of snow, the nex two nights the guys
start at 2 a.m. downtown. There are 28
blocks of downtown parking that must
be pu led from the curb to the center
of the street. The a leys within those 28
blocks are done a the same time and
pushed to the center windrow. That wi l
take anywhere from two to four hours
depending on the amount of snow we
receive. Once that is done, then they wi l
head out to plow their routes.”
Plymouth County Engineer Tom
Rohe said his department wi l have 35
workers, 14 truck plows and 14 motor
graders available. They have a mixture
of rock salt and liquid chemicals ready
(SENTINEL PHOTO BY BEVERLY VAN BUSKIRK)
On Tuesday, Le Mars City Street Department workers were making sure city
trucks are ready to go out and plow snow from the expected winter storm to hit
the area today (Wednesday).
