Life on the Farm 

For the Moms. . . 

Mom was the hardest working person I have ever 

met. All my childhood and teenage years her day 

began at 5:30 a.m. and ended sometime around 

11:00 p.m., seven days a week. She was 40 when 

I was born so I really never knew her in her energetic 

years. I never saw her in a bad mood, never 

remember her ever being cranky. I only heard 

her say an off-coloured word once. I was 18 and 

the minute she said it, she apologized. A newborn 

calf that she was trying to teach to drink 

from a pail spilled the milk on her and she 

uttered the four letter word for cow pie. Which in 

my humble opinion isn't a four letter word especially 

on a farm. It is merely a noun to describe 

the contents of the gutter or an 

adjective 

describing your boots. She told me she only had 

to spank me once. I was two so needless to say 

that memory never haunts me. Either I was a 

quick learner, a good boy or Mom was a kind soul. 

I'm sure all who know me will jump to a proper 

conclusion as to which one of those three it was. 

She was born Mabel Estella Johnson in 1914 to 

prairie settlers in Saskatchewan. Lived through 

the "dirty thirties" in that province then in 1941 

married Dad and moved to the farm in 

Northern Ontario. Mom had the work ethic of 

her settler parents and my father would sometimes 

call her Charlie after hard working 

Grandpa Johnson. Mom never was paid for 

anything she did except as a teenager when she 

worked as a housekeeper/nanny. Therefore, 

never collected a pension of any kind including 

C.P.P. until her 65th birthday. I have often 

thought she should have demanded money 

from Dad for all her farm work but I don't 

know if that thought ever entered her head. 

I think often of Mom's hands. No, they were not 

manicured to perfection. The nails weren't 

painted with some delicate colour. The palms 

and finger tips were calloused and cracked. 

They were rough to the touch. Yet the memory 

I now have is of when she tucked her little boy 

in at night. Those rough hands were so kind I 

can still feel them as she rubbed my back to 

put me asleep. 

She passed from this life July 8, 2009 in 

her 95th year. We eulogized Mom on that 

day as hundreds gather to remember her 

life. A biblical Proverb was used that 

says, "Go to the ant you lazy one, see it's 

ways and become wise, although it has no commander, 

officer or ruler, it prepares its food 

even in the summer, it has gathered it's food 

supplies even in the harvest." That was Mom 

like the ant always on the go, always carrying a 

load bigger then her share. Not worrying about 

whose job it was only thinking that the job had 

to be done. 

She was extremely hospitable, able to feed an 

army of visitors on short notice. So many had 

good meals at our table and many took advantage 

of that opportunity. The sad part is at the 

time we probably just took it for granted the 

effort required to do all that as well as take her 

place in the dairy barn. No one in her house 

was ever neglected or left wanting. Mom 

ascribed to the philosophy, "Do not neglect to 

show kindness to strangers for some have 

entertained angels unawares." 

In 1976 when we took over the farm Mom's life 

changed but not her philosophies. She now could 

find time to quilt and grow a garden the size of a 

small farm. Can and preserve food for all her family. 

All the grand children have quilts stitched by 

Grandma and several others as well. 

I could spend hours writing a tribute to Mom. 

This is fairly short and really only about a couple 

aspects of what she was like. Life On The 

Farm for me was made so much easier because 

of my Mother. On this Mother's Day whether we 

are from a farm, small town or city remember 

the love of your Mom. If you still have her hug 

her and if you don't look heavenward and smile 

because you're now friends with an angel.

Memories From You. . . 

Mother Did It All . . . 

Mother married my dad at the age of 

19. She never worked away from 

home, but was a farm wife until 

they retired and sold the farm. 

Mother was an excellent cook, for 

she had plenty of practice preparing 

3 meals a day 7 days a week. Dad 

often had someone helping him with 

farming until my brothers were old 

enough to help, so she often fed 

extra people. She also was an excellent 

seamstress and made a lot of 

my clothes as well as many of her 

own. 

Coal Was Expensive. . . 

When my grandmother's first baby died during 

childbirth, they had mourning in the kitchen with 

the baby wrapped and set on the table. She said 

the wild cats surrounded the house and meowed 

loudly and tried to get in (creepy). Her firstborn 

was delivered at home (on the farm. She had four 

biological children and raised four local children 

after they were orphaned. My parents also raised 

a woman with a very low IQ who became pregnant, 

and they also raised her son as their own. All the 

children were raised in a deeply religious home, 

but a very patient and loving one. The home they 

all lived in is now falling down. The roof collapsed 

onto the second floor, but it hasn't changed since 

Grandma Ethyl died in 1966 ... a time capsule. 

Pictures still on the wall and there’s still medicine 

under the kitchen sink. 

Mother Hen. . . 

Wild Mallard ducks nested each year near our grain 

field. On one occasion our dog caught and killed a 

mother duck who was on her nest. Our Mom rescued 

the eggs and brought them home. They were put under 

a setting hen. In due time they hatched. Mother Hen 

was so proud of her family and was soon able to take 

them out into the farmyard. 

The young ducklings realized there was a pond nearby 

and were soon swimming merrily. Poor Mother Hen 

stood on the shores "clucking" for her brood. The 

young ducks were happy until dusk and then were 

glad to return to their Mother Hen and their nesting 

box. This continued day after day, with the Mother 

Hen waiting for her family to come to her. 

The ducks grew and soon Mother Hen let them go to the 

pond alone while she stayed in the yard with the chickens.

Keep The Live Auctions Alive? 

Our Good Friday LIVE Auction was about to get underway, it was April 

7, 2023. As Tom, family and staff took their positions around the Ballantrae 

Community Centre, there was a different feeling in the room compared 

to years past, but at the same time it felt like we had never left. 

Every seat in the house was taken, opening remarks were made and the 

non stop action followed for the next five hours. 

There was a number of new people who came to this auction who had 

only Online Auction experiences, everyone of them appeared to love the 

action, the excitement and the fact they could touch and feel their items 

of interest during the preview. This is what we’re missing as live auctions 

dwindle away and may be non existent sooner than later. 

We use to never miss conducting the Good Friday Auction. Several years 

ago I clearly remember counting 43 other auctioneers with Good Friday 

live auctions advertised in various newspapers all around Southern Ontario, 

and most were within 100 km’s of our Stouffville area. This was 

concerning because at that time we were relatively new in the business, 

but to my delight we had full attendance because this is what people use 

to do. This year I saw no other live auctions advertised in the Woodbridge 

or other forums we advertise on. I’m sure we were the only live gig on this 

day. 

The sale was very successful by todays standards. I must say that todays 

standards do not measure up compared to a few years ago, what use to 

sell well that does not now and what sold poorly then that does do well 

now. Example- $360 for two boxes of LP’s that we use to sell in job lots, 

but a beautiful antique dresser with original mirror for $10. 

Our online auctions are temporarily on hold for a few years as Grand Baby’s 

are coming along. We are over the top thrilled to no end of our 30 years of live 

auctions plus our daughter who kept it going for 3 years online. 

Grandma & Grampa’s favorite Part Though Was Seeing Our three children 

back working in the auction, all now in their 30’s. We cannot ask 

for a better day than that.
