Kingspan Stadium
In this Issue
Welcome back to Kingspan Stadium,
the home of Ulster Rugby, where this evening, the Ulster men
will host South African powerhouses the Vodacom Bulls, in
Round 16 of the United Rugby Championship.
Currently placed third in the URC standings, the Ulster men will be hoping to
take full advantage of having not only this match but the final two regular
season fixtures at home. Tonight’s match is going to be another tough test against a
top team, so we have no doubt it will be a thrilling hard-fought encounter.
Another exciting aspect of tonight’s game is the Kingspan Try-Cycle Challenge which
is taking place over at the Fan Zone. This interactive computer game will see two
participants go head-to-head to pedal stationary bikes as far as they can in 30 seconds.
Top scorers will then go on to win amazing prizes like a bike from Giant Bicycles or an
away game trip with the Ulster Rugby team including travel and accommodation.
Make your way over to the Fan Zone and see if you can clinch the top spot at the end
of the season.Ahead of what will be a challenging and entertaining showdown tonight,
we would like to wish the Ulster men the very best of luck and we can’t wait to hear the
roar of the supporters ringing around Kingspan Stadium once again.
Enjoy the game!
Welcome
URC URCOFFICIAL URCOFFICIAL URC
Hello everyone and welcome back to
Kingspan Stadium for our match this
evening against Vodacom Bulls in Round 16
of the BKT United Rugby Championship. It’s
the Pretorian side’s first visit to Belfast and
we will aim to be getting our first victory
against them under our belts.
We are now entering a crucial part of our
season as we chase down a top two finish in
the URC and face our interprovincial rivals
Leinster next weekend in the knockout stage
of the Heineken Champions Cup.
Every match now is like a final. The players have
been working hard over the break between
games and we need your support to help us
drive over the line.
We went into this match with two impressive
away wins in Durban and Cardiff respectively
and will hope Dan McFarland’s men can
continue this winning momentum.
Irish Rugby is in a strong place and we are all
proud of the fantastic Grand Slam winning
Ireland team that made history against
England last weekend by winning the Guinness
Six Nations in style.
From an Ulster point of view it was fantastic
to see Rob Herring, Tom O’Toole and Kieran
Treadwell coming off the bench and making
great impacts. While it was a shame to see our
club captain Iain Henderson out with an injury,
he can be very proud of the performances he
made during the campaign.
Head Coach Andy Farrell highlighted the
importance of the entire squad and we hope
that Nick Timoney, Jacob Stockdale and
Tom Stewart all gain confidence from being
involved.
We also wish all of our Ulster women who
were called up to the Ireland Women’s side
for the TikTok Six Nations all the best for the
tournament and hope they can get off to a
winning start against Wales in the opener in
Cardiff.
It was also a great couple of weeks for domestic
rugby in the province. We witnessed a fantastic
Danske Bank Schools’ Cup Final between
Campbell College and RBAI, which was won
with a brilliant try from the Inst captain Jacob
Boyd in the final play. The standard of the final
was excellent and shows how good the next
generation could be.
This week we congratulate both Enniskillen
Royal Grammar School, who won the Danske
Bank Girl’s Schools’ Cup, in a 10-2 victory against
Royal School Armagh and Craigavon Senior High
School for their 30-0 victory over Ballymoney
High in the U16 High Schools’ Trophy.
Two fantastic finals and it was great to host
both at Kingspan Stadium.
I hope everyone enjoys the match tonight.
Let’s make it an atmosphere to remember and
keep our winning form going.
Ethan
McIlroy
50 22
Ulster’s versatile back three player looks back at reaching
his 50th cap for the province in the 20-42 away win
against Cardiff.
Ethan McIlroy was able to celebrate a
personal milestone, reaching 50 caps for
Ulster, as the province made it two BKT
United Rugby Championship away wins on
the trot against Cardiff in Wales.
McIlroy remains remarkably calm and
grounded about the achievement, saying
he didn’t realise he had notched his 50th
appearance in an Ulster jersey until after the
final whistle.
“It was a proud moment for me, it was nice to
get on the pitch from the bench and it was an
important win away from home which was
needed at this crucial part of the season.
I hadn’t thought about my 50th cap too
much but after the match I was told about it,
so it was nice to hit that benchmark.”
50 caps at 22 years old shows that while
McIlroy is still a young man, he has a
considerable amount of top level rugby
experience under his belt.
He was rewarded for his impressive
performances last season, by winning the
2021/22 Ulster Young Player of the Year award.
Known for his quick feet and skillful wing play,
McIlroy says that he has only good memories
of making his debut against provincial rivals
Leinster at the RDS, back in December 2019.
Ulster lost the match that day in a 54-42 classic
against the Dubliners but it was still a moment
to remember for the Ballynahinch man.
“My debut is nothing but good memories.
“That match was a record for the league at
the time, about 90 points in the game, very
back and forth. I enjoyed it and remember
enjoying my rugby at that age too, I didn’t
feel too much pressure and it was fun to get
out there and enjoy it.”
That’s not to say McIlroy isn’t enjoying his
rugby now but he knows that as a first team
regular, he has to fulfil expectations and put
in consistent performances to play in the
Ulster first team.
When reflecting on how he has changed
as a player and a person, McIlroy says he
knows now that the next generation of rugby
players are watching him closely.
“It feels a lot different from the 1st cap to the 50th!
“You are bit more of a role model to younger
kids, more people recognise you around the
Kingspan Stadium on a matchday, which is
nice and its endearing to see kids looking up
to you.
“I’d like to think I got a bit better at the rugby
since arriving!”
For his age he is very self aware and
professional, knowing how much work is
needed at the top level of rugby.
When looking back at his favourite Ulster
moment so far, the former Methody man
says that playing in a team alongside his
friends is what stands out to him.
“The Toulouse try in corner, even though we
lost that game or Clermont away, because
the back three who finished the game were
myself, Nathan Doak and Stewart Moore.
“We are close to each other age wise , I grew
up with them playing rugby and playing
against them in school, so it was a funny
moment when we realised and that was a fun
moment on the pitch.”
McIlroy’s progress is not only recognised by
Ulster Head Coach Dan McFarland but also
the Ireland international set up.
McIlroy was one of a few Ulster teammates
to be selected for the Emerging Ireland
camp last autumn and he says watching the
current Irish back three of James Lowe, Mack
Hansen and Hugo Keenan gives anyone in his
position motivation to aspire to.
“It would be silly not to look at those 3 or 4
guys in the senior side at the moment, they
are the best team in world and it looks like
they wont get beat. They are world class.”
For now, he is getting ready for the crunch
part of Ulster’s season, starting with a home
clash against the Vodacom Bulls.
For McIlroy he is unfazed about reaching 50
and wants to keep progressing in what has
been a promising start to his career.
The Ulster Society of
Rugby Football Referees
We welcome Craig Evans (WRU) and his
team of officials to Kingspan Stadium for
this evening’s BKT URC Round 16 match
between Ulster and Vodacom Bulls.
As it has been quite some time since
the last home match, we would like to
remind spectators of Ulster Rugby’s
#respectURgame campaign. Please do
respect the decisions of the match officials
at all times.
This week in ‘Referees Corner’ we have the
pleasure of catching up with experienced
USRFR member, Peter Doherty. Having
never played the game, Peter accepted
the kind invitation from a good friend back
in August 2016 to go along to a referee
training event and he has never looked
back. Working as a GP and serving the
great people of Bloomfield in Bangor, we
were delighted to get the opportunity to
understand more about his life on and off
the pitch.
Do you have a family and how do you
juggle family life whilst being a referee?
I have a wife, a young daughter and
a Basset Hound. It can be very tricky
managing work and family commitments
but my wife and family are very
supportive of my refereeing career and we
both make compromises to ensure that I
can continue to referee at the highest level
possible.
What is your training regime like?
Since taking on a GP Partnership and the
arrival of our first child my training regime
has been somewhat curtailed. Previously
I would have been able to attend my club
(Belfast Harlequins RFC) two nights per
week and work with the senior squad
whilst also doing my own fitness work for a
further night or two. The USRFR do arrange
for fairly intensive pre-season training each
year and I try to attend this when I can.
How do you prepare for a game?
During the week before the game I will
review my previous performance and any
recent mentor or evaluation reports for
me to develop any weaker parts of my
game management. Having refereed for
seven years now, I am aware of most teams
strengths and will use this to identify any
potential problem areas for the game. This
will usually allow me to come up with a plan
for how to manage the game better should
problems arise. The night before a fixture
is usually spent packing my kit back with a
selection of different coloured tops, boots
and warm clothing for after the game, as
all of my other equipment (whistles, card
wallet, scorecards, flags etc) usually stay in
my kit bag. I will usually watch a game
and use any flash points to review the
laws so that I am up to speed for my
own game. On matchday I aim to
be at the ground one hour before
kick-off and use the journey time
to go over my game plan. At
the ground I’ll try to chat with
both coaches early on, get
studs checked, arrange the
coin toss and chat with the
captains before starting into
my own warm up.
What is the biggest thing
you have learned since you
started refereeing?
Let the game breathe! At times
I have been guilty of being overjudicious
but remaining calm
and allowing play to develop can
make decision making easier and
can get some positive buy-in from
the players.
What is the most memorable game you
have refereed so far?
As a referee I will always remember the
U18 Edgar Bowman Cup Final in 2022
between Ballymena and Belfast Met as
this was my first experience of being the
referee in Kingspan Stadium. The weather
was brilliant, and the teams played some
great rugby. I was also fortunate enough
to be part of the match official team for
the Women’s Six Nations game between
Ireland and Scotland last season.
What advice would you give to someone
thinking about taking up refereeing?
Give it a go! I wish I had started sooner in
life as the opportunities for refereeing at
the highest possible level are there and the
support from the USRFR to get you to the
highest level is invaluable.
Who is your favourite referee and why?
I enjoy watching Wayne Barnes referee. You
can agree or disagree with his individual
decisions, but his communication is
arguably the best in the business.
What one law would you like to change
or introduce?
Scrum option from penalties and freekicks
– I would like to see an end to this
so we can see more attacking rugby and
more ball-in-play time during a game.
I can see why teams with a big pack or
numerical advantage use it but it can take
the momentum and atmosphere out of
a game.
Peter is also the USRFR representative
on the Ulster Branch Women’s and Girls
Committee. So he makes a massive
voluntary contribution to rugby in Ulster
both on and off the pitch, for which we
thank him greatly.
Last Time Out
Ulster claimed back-to-back wins on the
road in the BKT URC with a six-try bonus
point win in Cardiff.
Ulster headed to Cardiff, a week after an
impressive win in Durban against the Cell
C Sharks, looking to keep their play-off
destiny in their own hands. Head Coach
Dan McFarland made ten changes to that
team, including the return of Rob Herring,
Kieran Treadwell and Jacob Stockdale from
the Ireland Six Nations squad.
It didn’t take long for the Ulstermen to get
up and running. After holding onto the
ball for a number of phases, the returning
James Hume timed his pass well to his
centre partner Stewart Moore. Moore held
onto the ball and ran free through a gap in
defence for the opening try after only two
minutes. Nathan Doak made no mistake
adding the extras.
Cardiff took only five minutes to respond.
Ulster seemed to be in control in defence,
but a strong carry by Rey Lee-Lo, bumping
off two Ulster defenders, allowed the
centre to pop an offload to Owen Lane
Sat 4 Mar
20 - 42
who finished down the wing. Jarrod Evans
failed to convert, but with sixteen minutes
played, and Ulster penalised at the line out,
he made amends with a penalty kick, giving
the home team a one point lead.
The lead lasted no time at all, as the travelling
Ulster support were treated to a world-class
Jacob Stockdale try. Stewart Moore was
able to release the winger with an offload
between two defenders, before Stockdale
chipped the last defender, regathered and
grounded the ball in the corner. The class
of the try was matched by the conversion,
Doak slotting the extras from the touch line.
A third first half try for Ulster came off
some dominant attack, moving the Welsh
team side to side. Doak, keeping the tempo
high, hit Jeff Toomaga-Allen on a short line,
and the prop made a strong carry. With
the defence retreating, Doak darted off
himself from the base of the ruck, running
in unopposed for this own converted try.
After a period of play which saw Dave
McCann and Rory Sutherland make some
big carries and Billy Burns make inroads
in attack, Cardiff were penalised under
pressure. Ulster opted to kick into the
corner and turn to the maul. However,
Cardiff held strong and forced an Ulster
mistake. With the clock in the red, Ulster
found themselves with another penalty
and another line out, but unfortunately it
produced the same result.
HALF TIME: Cardiff 8 - 21 Ulster
In the opening exchanges of the second
half, Ulster were looking to reassert their
dominance and claim a bonus point. The
first opportunity came as Billy Burns
showed good pace to glide through a
gap and bring play deep into the Cardiff
half, but this chance was given up at the
breakdown. Shortly after, Marcus Rea
made a muscular carry, but his attempted
offload was snuffed out.
Ulster didn’t let off though, and eventually
were rewarded, as the ball was released
from the forwards for Billy Burns to show
good determination to power over the
line. Doak was successful with his fourth
conversion, and Ulster had the bonus point
after 52 minutes of play.
With 60 minutes played, Ulster introduced
a number of replacements, including
Jude Postlethwaite for his senior Ulster
debut. One of those replacements, hooker
Tom Stewart made an immediate impact,
dotting down off the back of a driving
maul for the 5th try of the night. Doak kept
his perfect record off the tee with another
super conversion from the touchline.
Cardiff were not ready to accept defeat,
and almost immediately from the result
responded, with Lee-Lo again making an
impressive offload to Owen Lane who
crossed for this second of the evening.
Postlethwaite was showing plenty of
promise, moving the ball and carrying well,
and Ulster soon found themselves back
in Cardiff territory. However, an intercept
deep in the Cardiff 22 allowed the Welsh
to run out of pressure. Ulster stopped
the initial attack but replacement Aled
Summerhill showed impressive pace and
footwork to give Cardiff a third try. Jarrod
Evans converted and the gap was reduced
to 20-35 in favour of the visitors.
The Ulster management will be pleased,
as a scrum penalty allowed Burns to pop
the ball into the corner and gave the team
an opportunity to extend their lead. Harry
Sheridan, just off the bench, rose up in the
air to take the ball at the front of the lineout
and Tom Stewart made no mistake off
the tail to cross for his second try of the
night. Doak, perfect off the tee, added the
extras to bring Ulster’s tally to 6 tries, and
42 points.
Both teams were afforded a couple of
opportunities in the closing exchanges but
neither were able to cross the whitewash
again, leaving the final score as Cardiff 20,
Ulster 42. Scrum half Nathan Doak was
named the BKT URC Player of the Match.
The Scrum Half was 100% off the tee and
along with Burns, kept the tempo high off
the back of some dominant forwards play.
Ones to Watch
Kurt Lee Arendrse Winger
The Bulls welcome back their exciting winger from
being away with the Springboks national side
training camp.
Arendrse is a potent threat for the Bulls, the nimble
winger is their top try scorer in the URC this
season. The 26-year-old made a name for himself
internationally, in the recent 2022 Autumn Nations
Series, by scoring tries against Ireland, England,
France and Italy.
Chris Smith Fly-half
The Bulls leading scorer this season is their accurate fly
half, Chris Smith, who is having a successful URC season
with 107 points.
He has previous joy against Ulster with his kicking, as
in last year’s victory in Pretoria he kicked home two
conversions and two penalties.
Bismarck du Plessis Hooker
The veteran 38-year-old hooker is seen as one of the
greatest of his position in South African rugby history. He
was capped 79 times for South Africa in a distinguished
international career, appearing in three Rugby World Cups.
The well journeyed hooker also played over 100 matches
for French side Montpellier, where he won the European
Rugby Challenge Cup twice and the Cell C Sharks, where
he made 131 appearances.
Jeffery Toomaga-Allen
Q&A
Our last home game was against DHL
Stormers in January. How much are you
looking forward to getting back to Kingspan
Stadium and seeing the fans again?
Really excited, we haven’t been at home in a
while, our last turnout was great, we are all
feeling hyped after a break and can hopefully
bring that to the Bulls this weekend.
After scoring last home game are you
hungry for another one?!
I’m always hungry for a meat pie! Who
doesn’t love it? As long as I do my job
anything extra is a bonus hopefully, I would
be stoked if I get a scrum penalty or two!
Ireland obviously celebrated a historic
Grand Slam victory in the Guinness Six
Nations. Which props impressed you across
the competition?
Andrew Porter. He is class, has got a bit
of mongrel about him, old school, always
bleeding, filthy haircut and a hard working
prop. Tadhg Furlong is always brilliant but
I have got to back my boy, Tom O’Toole.
For a young blood coming in week in week
out at that level, he has done a great job
so hopefully we get him back next week.
Thoughts on our recent three game block?
We need to keep momentum going, we won
the last two and we take the learnings from
Glasgow defeat. We just keep that momentum
going into the business end of season.
What are you expecting from the Bulls?
They are a threat everywhere, have a great
set piece, full of big boys with plenty of flair
and are good on both sides of ruck. We
are preparing for them and will be ready.
Importance in pushing for top two?
I don’t pay too much attention to the
table, winning at home will put us in
good stead. We have got a big block
ahead of us and the Bulls are our main
focus. I’m pretty pumped for it and I hope
they can play my song (Freed from Desire)
on the speakers. Gets my shoulders rolling!
Jeff has clocked-up 9 appearances for
Ulster, won a cap as an All-Black and more
recently won 3 caps for Samoa, for which
he qualifies for through his family heritage.
On the same afternoon, Craigavon Senior
High School won the Danske Bank U16
High Schools’ Trophy after beating
Ballymoney High School 30-0 in the final
at Kingspan Stadium.
They ran in six unconverted tries to secure
the Trophy, with fly-half Samuel Ruddell
picking up the Player of the Match Award
after a dominant performance in which he
passed well and marshalled the backline
with authority to see his School to victory.
worked through a few phases before
Beattie barged over for his second.
His score made it 20-0 and capped a fine
afternoon for the tighthead prop, who had
carried and passed well throughout the final.
Ballymoney had been forced to work hard
in defence and break on the counter, but
soon found themselves down to 14 when
Jack Pearson was shown a yellow for
collapsing the maul.
Enniskillen Royal Grammar School are the
22/23 Danske Bank Girls Schools’ Cup
winners after beating Royal School Armagh
10-2 in the final at Kingspan Stadium.
The game was played in a Sevens format,
with tries worth 1 point, and the game
divided into four quarters of 7 minutes
each.
It was early into the opening quarter that
ERGS captain and Player of the Match
Scarlett Keys scored the first of her four
tries, racing in from distance to touch down.
Chloe Moore then scored the second for
the Fermanagh school, before Keys got the
third to give them a 3-0 lead at the end of
the opening quarter.
RSA hit back in the second quarter as Kate
Berry crossed to reduce the deficit to 3-1,
but ERGS quickly restored their advantage
when Keys ran clear to bag her hat-trick.
Enniskillen Royal then saw Freya Brennan
and Leah Irwin combine well before
releasing Anna Wilson who sprinted clear
to score a try and make it 5-1 at half time.
ulster.rugby
Girls’ Cup &
U16 High Schools’
Winners
The second half began in the same fashion
as Wilson again showed good pace to run
clear for her second try, before Brennan
made good use of the space to sprint
home from distance to make it 7-1.
Into the closing quarter of the final, Royal
School Armagh showed good fight when
captain Kaitlyn Graham scored for her
school.
Enniskillen then sealed their win with a
quick series of late tries.
Scarlett Keys ran in her for fourth try,
before Wilson left the defence in her wake
to score her third and secure a hat-trick.
As the game ticked to a close, Leah Irwin
broke through to score close to the posts
and make it 10-2.
Captain Scarlett Keys was then presented
with the Player of the Match Award, with
Danske Bank Operations Director Vicki
Hassan handing over the trophy, as well
as the medals for the winners and the
runners-up.
They were led by James Beattie, who
stood-in to captain the side in the absence
of regular skipper Ted McQuitty, who
missed out through illness.
It was Beattie who set up the first try,
releasing Bailey Lappin to race to the
corner and make it 5-0.
After a Ballymoney surge, Craigavon
gathered the ball and quickly countered,
eventually releasing fullback Ben Robinson
who looked certain to sprint clear from
halfway and finish, only to be stopped
short by a superb cover tackle by AJ
Beech.
However, Craigavon soon had their second
try when Ruddell passed to Matthew Givan
close to the line, and the inside centre
smartly stepped inside to cross and make
it 10-0, with no further scores coming
before the break.
The third was scored by captain
James Beattie, who crashed
over after a cleverly worked
tap-and-go penalty routine
deceived the Ballymoney
defence.
A good kick from
Ruddell then put
his school deep
into Ballymoney
territory, and
following a good
break by right
wing Jacob Farr,
the forwards
Craigavon made their numbers count right
away, and from the following lineout, the
forwards quickly recycled the ball for number
8 Alfie Thornton to drive over and score.
Replacement Aaron Conn then rounded
off the scoring for Craigavon when he
gathered a loose lineout throw and
powered over to score their 6th try.
Samuel Ruddell then received his Player
of the Match Award from Danske Bank
Business Manager Carol McCready, who
was joined in the presentation of the
Trophy and medals by Paul Hart, Chair of
the Ulster Branch Youth Committee.
‘Slam’ Offers Ulster More Incentive!
The last two months have confirmed that
rugby in Ireland is on an unprecedented
‘high’, the international team without peer.
As Ulster begins a critical period of its
season this evening in the BKT Ulster
Rugby Championship against the South
African Bulls at Kingspan Stadium there
will be a buoyant mood fired by the 2023
Grand Slam win.
With a Heineken Champions Cup trip to
Leinster next week, then visits to Belfast from
the Dragons and Edinburgh to complete
the URC regular campaign in pursuit of
a home play-off quarter-final, everything
which is positive will be channelled by Dan
McFarland and his players.
For Ireland there were epic games, hurdles
overcome with style, opportunities grasped
and relished by a group of confident
players clearly accelerating its skillsets
and an extraordinary, convincing depth of
high-class quality throughout the squad
fashioned by Andy Farrell.
Playing important roles in the Championship
were Stuart McCloskey, Rob Herring, Iain
Henderson – all-too-briefly sadly – Kieran
Treadwell and Tom O’Toole. Tom Stewart,
Nick Timoney and Jacob Stockdale were
significantly part of the larger squad Farrell
credited with contributing much to the Six
Nations triumph.
His coaching ticket has also grown in
stature in recent seasons: Simon Easterby’s
proven track record as a player has been
decorated further and John Fogarty’s
reputation has grown immeasurably as the
front row became the platform to create
the best forward unit in Irish history.
A certain Paul O’Connell has found eager
disciples on and off the training ground,
innovation and accuracy mirroring the
great man’s own special playing talents.
Mike Catt, whose star seemed to have
waned perilously two years ago has seen
his attack coach duties lauded now as the
Irish backline, marshalled so often by one
Jonathan Sexton.
The perception – as evidenced by the
squad now returning to their clubs - is that
Farrell is a taskmaster setting ever more
ambitious targets, but developing very
strong and humane relationships with each
of the players who have eyes firmly set on
a World Cup autumn in France.
There’s trust at the core of this group
and the large contingent of players who
may not have featured recently but are
monitored every week, often contacted
directly to encourage, advise and expand
the fellowship of the national side.
Here in Ulster, long-time injured such as
Robert Baloucoune, Will Addison and
Marty Moore, for instance, all feel they are
key parts of the Farrell project. Michael
Lowry, Nathan Doak, James Hume have
further international ambitions just now
and, who knows, could yet be part of the
World Cup preparation and tournament in
the summer.
It’s a large umbrella under which players
from every Province feel engaged and
needed.
Success lifts spirits on the pitch, in the
stands and in a huge television and radio
audience. It can be contagious, and Michael
Lowry put it so well this week. He said the
Ulster players who played their part in the
Grand Slam returned to the Ulster dressing
room, each and every one an inspiration to
a similarly ambitious Ulster cohort.
But the feelgood factor at the moment
must be translated now to club form and
performance, and McFarland and his
coaching team can be quietly satisfied
with the team’s displays in wins against the
Sharks in South Africa and at Cardiff during
the testing Six Nations period.
Ulster sits in third in the URC table, behind
runaway leaders Leinster and with the
Stormers making a stern defence of the
title won in last season’s final against
tonight’s visitors to Belfast.
A top four finish will earn a home quarterfinal
in the new, extended play-off series
and Ulster supporters will hope that a
tranche of URC games at Ravenhill Park
will see the ground throbbing with the
excitement and thrill which accompanies
the expectation of silverware.
McFarland would have obviously preferred
to have club captain Henderson available
at this important stage of the season but
Ulster’s world-class lock has his arm in
plaster after suffering a fracture against
Scotland. Treadwell is an option in the
second row, vying with Alan O’Connor and
Sam Carter probably for a starting role
against the Bulls.
Hopefully Herring and O’Toole are available
after their ‘Slam’ efforts, while the midfield
will surely welcome back Stuart McCloskey,
now an established international. With
ulster.rugby
53
Hume, Luke Marshall and Stewart Moore all
in fine form, the centre combinations are
varied and of real quality and imagination.
There is the mouth-watering prospect that
Ulster’s internationals Jacob Stockdale and
Baloucoune could be twinned together
on the wings, though Ethan McIlroy, Ben
Moxham and a clutch of others will be in
the thoughts when the coaches sat down
to finalise the side.
Jake White, the Bulls’ Director of Rugby,
has named a strong panel for a trip to the
northern hemisphere for tonight’s URC
clash and next week’s Champions Cup
encounter with Toulouse.
White has also had to factor in the demands
being made by the domestic Currie Cup
competition, with two recent home losses
adding to URC reverses going right back to
a win in early January against the Dragons.
Nonetheless some very illustrious and
familiar names are littered through the
squad, with hooker Bismarck du Plessis
called up, while the gifted playmaker and
prolific Chris Smith are key components
of a tram which will almost certainly be
skippered by the formidable lock forward
Ruan Nortje.
The return of Springbok wings Kurt-Lee
Arendse and Canan Moodie offers pace
and sureness in defence to the Bulls threequarter
line, while Zak Burger will hope to
get the ‘nod’ at scrum-half.
Ulster supporters will also be wary of a
strong Bulls bench, with the veteran Morne
Steyn still a powerful influence, particularly
when a game is tight, while another
experienced operator, Cornal Hendricks, is
an athletic threat in the midfield area.
But Ulster will surely be the side which
goes into this evening’s game with better
form collectively and individually, with a
management team which is now firmly
gelling and in a positive approach to
letting players make good decisions and be
unafraid to capitalise on the opportunities
which will certainly present themselves.
Thankfully, the mid-season ‘blip’ at New Year,
is most definitely in the past. Ulster’s resources
are fuller and healthier than for most of the
year and the challenges ahead are daunting
but, at the same time, compelling.
Securing that home play-off quarter-final in
the URC is a priority tonight, so supporters
know that a win over the Bulls would keep
the surging Munster at bay, and stall the
Bulls’ ambitions for that top four finish.
This is a game which offers both teams
the chance to confirm their title hopes
but there is real advantage from a home
game for an Ulster team which can incite
that famous ‘Roar’ from the terraces and
the stands.
The players, the coaches and fans all have
slowly boiled towards an authentic belief
that the trophy drought since 2006 can
be ended, perhaps not with a flood of
silverware, but certainly with tangible
reward from the URC or Europe.
Enjoy the last action before British Summer
Time kicks in a few hours after the final
whistle, and relish the prospect of further
matches in bright weather and surfaces
encouraging flowing, disciplined rugby.
Welcome the Bulls, but for Ulster the
time seems right to harbour real hopes in
this most incredible year for the game in
Ireland.
(CEO Ulster Rugby) and Robert Baloucoune on site at Horatio’s Garden Northern Ireland
Groundbreaking news from Ulster Rugby’s
charity partner, Horatio’s Garden
Ulster Rugby players Robert
Baloucoune, Sean Reffell and Matty
Rea joined Ulster Rugby President,
Phillip Gregg, and Ulster Rugby CEO,
Jonny Petrie, to mark the official
start of the build of Horatio’s Garden
Northern Ireland at Musgrave Park
Hospital in Belfast with patients,
families, friends, NHS and the
charity’s staff.
Horatio’s Garden is a national charity
building and maintaining specialist
therapeutic gardens in NHS spinal
injury centres. The garden has been
designed by nine-time RHS Chelsea
gold medal winner Andy Sturgeon.
ulster.rugby
Like all six of the charity’s existing
gardens, Horatio’s Garden Northern
Ireland has been thoughtfully
designed in collaboration with
patients, their loved ones and NHS
staff at the Spinal Cord Injuries Unit,
where the garden is set to open in
autumn 2023.
Supporting approximately 50
inpatients and 600 outpatients
annually, the new garden will be a
home away from home for people
spending many months in hospital
adjusting to their life-changing
injuries, as well as their families,
friends and fellow patients.
The garden itself will be cared
for by a dedicated team of
volunteers, who will be led by
a professional Head Gardener.
Together, the team will organise
regular gardening and creative
workshops, along with seasonal
events, all of which complement
the NHS team’s clinical care
to ensure people have the
best possible physical and
psychological outcomes after
injury.
Jonny Petrie, CEO Ulster Rugby,
said a few words on the day
about the project and why
Ulster Rugby are so proud to be
supporting Horatio’s Garden:
“We are really pleased to have
the opportunity to partner with
Horatio’s Garden this season,
and it’s great that the team
are now at the stage where
they are able to break ground
on the garden for Musgrave
Park Hospital. Together with
some of the professional
squad, I enjoyed meeting with
patients at the spinal unit who
will benefit from the garden,
and to hear directly what a
huge impact it will have when
complete.”
He added, “At Ulster Rugby, we feel
it’s important to have a nominated
charity partner, and we will continue
to do what we can to promote the
impressive work of Horatio’s Garden
as it progresses in its plans for the
Belfast build, whether that be through
L-R: Ulster Rugby players Matty Rea, Sean Reffell and
Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast
raising profile and funds, or visiting
and volunteering in the months
ahead.”
Dr Olivia Chapple, Founder & Chair of
Trustees at Horatio’s Garden, took the
opportunity to thank the players, staff,
and fans of Ulster Rugby. She shared,
“We would like to thank everyone who
has generously supported this project.
Horatio’s Garden in Belfast will change
lives for the many families facing the
devastation of spinal cord injury from
across Northern Ireland.”
