They shall bearranged such that the cargo tanks are located inboard of the moulded line of the side shel l platingnowhere less than the distance w, w hich, as shown in figure 1, is measured at any cross-section atright angles to the side shell, as specified below:oww = 0.5 + lO,OOO (m) orw = 2.0 m, whichever is the lesser. The minimum value of w = 1.0 m .. 2 Double bottom tanks or spacesAt any cross-section, the depth of each double bottom tank or space shall be such that the distanceh between the bottom of the cargo tanks and the moulded line of the bottom shell plating measuredat right angles to the bottom shell plating as shown in figure 1 is not less than specified below:h = -1L(m) or15h = 2.0 m, whichever is the lesser. The minimum va lue of h = 1.0 m .. 3 Turn of the bilge area or at locations without a clearly defined tum of the bilgeWhen the distances hand ware different, the distance w sha ll have preference at levels exceeding1.5h above the baseline as shown in figure 1.SEE INTERPRETATION 42• Refer to Unified Interpretations on measurement of distances (MSC-MEPC.5/Circ.5).MARPOL CONSOLIDATED EDITION 20F 73

arranged as to comply with the following requirement:

deck beam at side am idships. In ships having rounded gunwales, the moulded depth shall be
measured to the point of intersection of the moulded lines of the deck and side shel l plating, the
lines extending as though the gunwale were of angular design,

15 In the determination of PAc and PAs for segregated ballast tanks and spaces other than oil tanks the
following shall apply:
.1 the minimum w idth of each wing tank or space either of w hich extends for the ful l depth of the
ship's side or from the deck to the top of the double bottom shall be not less than 2 m. The width
sha ll be measured inboard from the sh ip's side at right angles to the centreline. Where a lesser
width is provided, the w ing tank or space shall not be taken into account when ca lculating the
protecting area PA,; and
.2 the minimum vertical depth of each double bottom tank or space shall be 1
~ or 2 m, whichever
is the lesser. Where a lesser depth is provided, the bottom tank or space shall not be taken into
account when calculating the protecting area PAs·
