d’actualité dans les nouvelles générations. Aussi elle continue
d’être un marqueur primordial de l’identité Teko.
« Cet échange entre Teko de l’Est et de l’Ouest a dynamisé la
transmission inter-générationnelle et permis un rapprochement
culturel entre un même groupe séparé géographiquement avec
des évolutions différentes selon leur bassin de vie. C’est aussi
réaffirmer l’identité Teko en Guyane » explique Jammes Panapuy,
président de l’association Akanta. Une nation autochtone
qui a failli disparaître durant la 1ère moitié du XXème siècle. Le
jeu des alliances avec le peuple wayãpi à l’Est et le peuple wayana
à l’Ouest a permis le renouveau démographique des teko,
passant d’une cinquantaine d’individus dans les années 1940-50
à plus de 1000 aujourd’hui. Et depuis quelques années, grâce
entre autres à des familles comme les Panapuy, la culture teko
est en pleine renaissance à l’instar des peuples autochtones de
Guyane, plus que jamais mobilisés pour la défense de leurs droits
et de leurs cultures.
La journée du 9 août, journée internationale des Peuples Autochtones,
a eu une résonnance forte en Guyane. Les peuples
premiers évoquant des problématiques récurrentes: le foncier,
la culture, la reconnaissance des droits mais aussi dénonçant les
injustices dont ils estiment être victimes. Des revendications qui
ne sont pas nouvelles…

“This exchange between the Teko of the east and the west
encourages intergenerational transmission and allowed a
cultural reconciliation between members of the same group
separated geographically and having evolved differently based
on their location. It is also a reaffirmation of the Teko identity in
Guiana,” explains Jammes Panapuy, president of the association,
Akanta, about an indigenous nation that was on the verge of
extinction during the first half of the 20th century. The interplay
of alliances between the Wayãpi people in the east and the
Wayana in the west encouraged a demographic renewal of the
Teko nation, increasing from approximately 50 individuals in the
1940’s-1950’s to more than 1,000 today. And for the past
several years, thanks to clans like the Panapuy family, The Teko
nation is enjoying a strong renaissance, following the example of
other indigenous peoples in French Guiana, who are more than
ever motivated to defend their rights and their culture.
August 9, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples,
is of major importance in French Guiana. The First Peoples
gather to discuss their recurring problems: land, culture, and the
recognition of their rights, while they also denounce the injustices
of which they consider themselves to be victims. These
revendications are certainly not new…
