An immigrant with
a wide vision
Singing star Olivia Newton-John passed away
in US on Monday at the age of 73. People here are
talking about this Australian legend.
Olivia was not locally born but in UK
Cambridge. She migrated to Melbourne at the age
of 5 with her father coming as a German professor.
She formed her own band at 14, performing in cafes
with schoolmates. At 17 she won the champion in a
TV singing contest giving her the chance to visit UK
where she pursued her music career thereafter. By
1975 she was in the US music arena and in 1978
she became a world star artist with her prominent
actress role in the movie ‘Grease’. That made her an
idol to many Australian young girls.
Olivia has a close tie with Australia. Since
diagnosed with cancer in 1992 she has been
devoted in cancer research and caring for cancer
patients. The establishment of the ONJ Cancer
Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne Austin
hospital was her great achievement. Hundreds of
millions were raised through the process, research
works were advanced and many families of patients
were offered support in their hardship. Her music
career in the later stage was quite affiliated to her life
experience in fighting against cancer and rendered
comfort to many others in the situation alike.
Olivia was also keen in animal caring,
environmental protection and other charity items.
Her last performance was in February 2020 at
Sydney doing fund raising for the NSW bush fire.
Although she was not born in Australia and only
spent her teenager years here, she still felt proud of
being an Australian and was willing to give her share
as one. Her performances in Sydney for the 2000
Olympic and the AFL Grand Final fully demonstrated
her intimate relation with this nation.
Actually Olivia was not of a pure English origin.
Her grandfather Max Born won the Noble Prize in
1952 for his uncovering of quantum mechanics.
Being a German Jew under Nazi repercussion, he
went to UK as a professor of Edinburgh University.
His daughter Irene Born married to a British MI5
agent and give birth to Olivia. Therefore, she has
Jewish heritance, and has close relationships with
German, UK, Australia, US etc., as with many
multi-cultural Australians are. Australia should be
proud of her passion with this country and her love
on humanity. Victoria Premier Andrew is seeking
agreement with her family for holding a state funeral
in recognition of her performing status and more so
her contribution in caring for cancer patients in our
country.
Australia is deemed to be the most multicultural
nation. Olivia has demonstrated here is a land of
diversity and opportunity where different ethnic
groups are settling together in passion and love.

2022 WRX Sportswagon
The Subaru WRX debuted around 1992,
initially based on the Impreza sedan, with
flat-four-turbo boxer (as with Porsche)
engine and all-wheel drive, gaining fame on
world rally circuits, starting a new category
of street car, attracting so called boy-racer
owners, and later in close rivalry with the
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.
A wagon version of the WRX, sometimes
known as Levorg, appeared around 2014,
essentially a WRX from its front to the back
wheels, but a stretched hatch behind that,
longer, but not as long as a station wagon.
An updated version of both the WRX and
wagon came around 2020, built around
the new Subaru Global Platform, v5 for the
sedan, and v2 of the Levorg.
The new sedan is a bit bigger all over and
the Wagon a bit bigger and higher off the
ground than the sedan. The SG Platform
stiffens the body approximately 14% laterally
in front and approximately 28% chassiswise,
leading to more precise control.
In Australia the wagon is now known
as the WRX ‘Sportswagon’ instead of
differently as ‘Levorg’, and we would think
that should boost its attraction, even if the
downside for the iconic WRX sedan may be
that it is linked to the wagon. We, however,
think the wagon is a much more attractive
proposition. SUV’s are after-all extremely
popular, and this wagon is essentially like
a lowered compact SUV, but much more
manoeuvrable and satisfying to drive,
especially considering its WRX credentials.
After all, the more practical Porsche Macan
sells way more units than its superstar
relative the 911.
In Japan, new WRX’s have 2.4 or 1.8 Litre
(for better economy) turbo-charged engines,
but so far Australia only has the 2.4 Litre
direct-injected boxer-turbo, which delivers
very impressive figures of 202 kilowatts
power at 5600rpm and 350 newton metres
torque from 2,000 – 5,200rpm.
This 2.4 Litre engine replaces a previous
2 Litre. The same Maximum Torque
extends over a broader rev range, but
power increases only 5kW for 20% engine
size increase. Also the previous engine
was inter-cooled (which further increases
compression of air going into combustion
chambers) whilst this is not. These facts
SAMEWAY ISSUE 664 | P. 20 12.08.2022
mean that this engine doesn’t have to work
as hard as the previous one, so should
be more durable, but also that there is
significant scope to increase output for those
who might wish to do so!
The WRX sedan has 6-speed manual
or CVT transmission, but the wagon solely
the new ‘Sport Lineartronic’ CVT, which
incidentally gives better fuel economy than
slower manual transmissions, This has 8
simulated gearing steps, which make it feel
more like a traditional auto. The manual
shifting mode uses faster new shifting logic.
The Sportswagon is a more practical
version of the WRX. Bigger, with more room
in the back, but handling close to how a
WRX does - same drive-train, suspension
and SGP basic platform, a little heavier and
raised a bit higher, with thinner wheels and
track, but more practical because the higher
rear roof section and
increased room mean
larger people can sit
in comfort in the back
seats, or much more
cargo can be stored,
with lowered rear
seats (electrically via
buttons), than in the
sedan.
The WRX wagon
comes in three variants
of increased spec level
- basic, GT and tS.
We had the top of line tS (‘tuned by
STI’), which most notably has a Sunroof,
electronic Suspension Dampening and
Drive Mode Select (by convenient steering
wheel button), to choose between modes
that change driving dynamics, namely
‘Comfort’, ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’, ‘Sport Plus’, and
‘Individual’, which can be customised by the
driver.
‘Sport Plus’ engages manual gear
changing via steering wheel flippers.
Electronical suspension dampers vary
comfort and handling characteristics
based on current vehicle data, augmenting
MacPherson strut front and double rear
wishbone fully-independent suspension.
The tS have Driver Monitoring with facial
recognition, distraction and drowsiness
warnings (the intrusive last two might be a
matter of personal choice!).
We had Drive mode set for ‘Individual’,
mixing comfort and sport, and found that
this car is an absolute pleasure to drive,
very easy to control, and very much sticks
to the road when changing direction and
cornering. Then, not that there’s much
opportunity in urban areas, when you plant
the foot it takes off like a rocket. The new
dual-pinion electronic steering system would
be contributing to easier control. The driving
dynamics vary noticeably going from comfort
to sport plus, depending on where you are
and what the conditions are, and how you
want the car to behave, with more relaxed
comfort or tight faster precision.
All models have 18-inch alloy wheels,
eight airbags, 11.6” info touchscreen, dual
climate/aircon, flat bottom leather steering
wheel, metallic sports pedals, supportive
sports bucket seats in front, Blind Spot
Monitor, Lane Change Assist and Rear
Cross Traffic Alert, self-levelling Steering
Responsive LED headlights, and LED front
fog lights, and Subaru’s latest generation
EyeSight twin camera setup behind the top
of the windscreen (not available with manual
transmission), provides safety tech including
- Adaptive cruise control, Emergency
lane keep assist and centring, Precollision
braking, assistance, and throttle
management, Autonomous emergency
steering, Speed sign recognition, Intelligent
speed limiter.

The most obvious change and attention
grabbing focal point of the redesigned
interior is the well designed, much larger
11.6’’new portrait-oriented info/control
screen, in a module below the dash, with
several physical knobs for easy access
whilst driving, including emergency flashers
and radio volume and tuning, then air-con is
accessed via the touch-screen, along with
all the other controls the screen facilitates
including Apple and Android, AM/FM/Digital
DAB+ radio, Satnav, vehicle settings. Centre
ventilators are contained at the sides of the
module. There is a high-res, 4.2-inch driverinfo
display between the tacho/speedo dials.
Externally, the redesigned wheel
arches and front end especially have more
prominent and angular creased surfaces,
and accompanied by WRX’s signature
bonnet scoop, the aggressive appearance
reinforces that this a hot slightly-longer-than
hatch!
