36STATUE ADJARÉPUBLIQUE DU BÉNINHauteur : 63 cm (24æ in.)€8,000–12,000PROVENANCEBert Garrebeek, BruxellesCollection Liliane et Michel Durand-Dessert,ParisAu Bénin et au Togo fleurissent les temples etcouvents vaudou où s’épanouit une statuairereligieuse spectaculaire. Ces deux statuesde même style, formant sinon un couple dumoins une paire, proviennent probablementd’un de ces temples. Les ornements qu’ellesprésentent, objets rajoutés et couleurs,sont tous représentatifs des principauxvodun, ceux de la foudre en particulier dontHéviésso (Shango chez les voisins Yoruba).Disposées à l’intérieur des temples sur desautels chargés d’offrandes, loin des regardsprofanes, leur accès est réservé aux adeptesou aux consultants venus demander unefaveur au vodun ou au Bokonon chargé dela divination. Les statues de ce type sontrarement aussi achevées que celles-ci,très anciennes et impressionnantes.AN ADJA FIGURE76
