La pyrogravure, l'art de décorer le bois à main levée avec
des marques de brûlure, est à la fois un art et un artisanat
à Madagascar.

l y a des portraits, des paysages et des scènes représentées
comme de l'art ainsi que des objets plus artisanaux tels que des
porte-clés et des bijoux. Tous sont produits par la technique
de la pyrogravure-pointillisme: des pointillées qui forment une
image, de la pyrogravure sur bois. Le support, qui n’est autre que du
bois ordinaire à l’état brut, est préparé après séchage et polissage.
Parfois, certains artistes récupèrent de temps en temps des restes
de bois: un geste écologique qui donne des œuvres authentiques et
uniques. Quant au motif, le pyrograveur ne suit que son inspiration
pour arriver à son but. Il cherche d’abord un sujet, puis réalise une
esquisse, et joue enfin et surtout avec l’ombre et la lumière. Savoir
utiliser cet outil à la pointe brûlante n’est pas assez pour devenir
pyrograveur, il faut aussi du talent et savoir maîtriser la température
pour que le bois ne noircisse pas trop vite et ne fume pas. Dans le
cas contraire, la pointe ne marquera pas assez le bois.
Zo Ramasindraibe, artiste plasticien depuis 20 ans et pyrograveur
depuis une année: “Le sujet ou l’environnement à reproduire m’aide
à définir comment je vais procéder, ensuite viennent les matières.
Souvent, je commence par des points et puis cela évolue en traits;
les couleurs constituent un plus”. En cas d’erreur, plutôt que
d’abandonner son oeuvre, il fait appel à son imagination et cela
donne des résultats surprenants sur des tableaux allant de
20x20cm à 50x60cm.

Madagascar.
There are portraits, landscapes and scenes depicted
as art as well as more craft objects such as key
rings and jewellery. All are produced by the
technique of pyrography-pointillism: dotted lines
that form an image, pyrography on wood. The basis, which is
nothing other than ordinary wood in its raw state, is prepared
after drying and polishing. Sometimes, artists recycle wood
scraps; an ecological gesture that creates authentic and
unique works of art. As for the motif, the pyrograver follows
his inspiration. He first looks for a subject, then makes a
sketch and finally plays with light and shadow. Knowing
how to use a burning point tool is not enough to become a
pyrograver, you also need talent and know how to control the
temperature so that the wood does not blacken too quickly
or smoke. Otherwise, the tip will not mark the wood enough.
Zo Ramasindraibe, a visual artist for 20 years and a
pyrographer for a year says, "The subject or environment to be
reproduced helps me to define how I'm going to proceed, then
come the materials. Often, I start with dots and then it evolves
into lines; colours are a plus”. In the event of an error, rather
than abandoning his work, he uses his imagination and this
gives some surprising results for his artworks ranging from
20x20cm to 50x60cm in size.
