22 e MontreuxComedyFestival
CHANGEMENT DE GÉNÉRATION / CHANGE OF GENERATION
Montreux Comedy a grandi avec Jamel, Laurent Gerra,
MESSAGES
They say that one generation lasts for 20 years. When I launched the Festival 22 years ago, the untouchable stars of comedy (all of them
snapped up since by movies) were called Les Inconnus, Les Nuls, Muriel Robin and Valérie Lemercier. Montreux Comedy grew up alongside
Jamel, Laurent Gerra, Florence Foresti or, in the case of our very own Swiss performers, Yann Lambiel, Jean-Luc Barbezat and Frédéric Recrosio,
among others.
Without a doubt, the year 2011 marks the arrival of a new generation. Their names are Eric Antoine, Véronic Dicaire, Arnaud Tsamère, and
Olivier de Benoist. And similarly here in Switzerland, I warmly welcome Samir, Noman Hosni, Charlotte Gabris, Nathanaël Rochat, and Laurent
Deshusses! Along with the usual big stars, they are now the ones who fill the theaters and bring in new audiences.
This new generation of artists and audiences is ushered in by a wave of new media: TNT channels, cable and satellite stations, Internet channels
and social networks. Nowadays, being multidistributed on one channel, having a community on Facebook, and publishing a video on Dailymotion
attracts audiences into theaters and creates a virtuous circle of content. The “big media” grab hold of something all of the sudden, and off it
goes! The general public, always hungry for novelty, would hardly be the one to complain!
This year, the Festival, in keeping with its custom, will again be right up to date: three galas will feature all of those comics considered to be artists
of the new generation. Its website and social networking accounts will be expanded even further, and the Montreux Comedy Club, that forum
for discovery, will be almost entirely programmed by the online community of Montreux by way of a participating third-party site. Finally, this
year we will lay the first foundational stone toward building our international development beyond the French-speaking world with the Montreux
Comedy Awards, an international competition of comic, audiovisual content. As such, creators of comedy stretching from the stage to the screen
– to screens of all kinds, in fact, wherever they are in the world – will plan to meet on the shores of Lake Geneva.
A huge thank you to all of our partners, including the city of Montreux and TSR, who both guided us in the creation of our online content and
knew how to follow the trends initiated by new media platforms. And lastly, I would particularly like to extend a warm welcome to our new
principal sponsor, Zurich Insurance Company, who has partnered with us for at least the next four years.
Have a great festival, everyone!
VIVE LE RIRE À MONTREUX ! / LONG LIVE LAUGHTER IN MONTREUX!
LAURENT WEHRLI | SYNDIC DE MONTREUX / MAYOR OF MONTREUX
MESSAGES
On behalf of the Municipality of Montreux, I am very excited to welcome the 22 nd annual Montreux Comedy Festival to our city from December
The Montreux Comedy Festival, an internationally renowned event, is one of the six largest cultural attractions falling under the category “Top
Montreux Events”. For our Commune as for our region, there are no better ambassadors in the world than these festivals that Montreux has
cultivated into local, homegrown specialties.
Bravo to the entire Montreux Comedy Festival team under the guidance of its founding President, Grégoire Furrer, who this year is overseeing
Montreux’s Communal Council. Bravo, too, to all the artists without whom this festival could not exist.
LE RIRE QUI PREND LA TÊTE / LAUGHING ’TIL IT HURTS
LAURENT BALLIF | SYNDIC DE VEVEY / MAYOR OF VEVEY
MESSAGES
In these glum times, laughing’s all the rage! Seasoned artists and comic newbies alike are scoring definite successes
with the general public. More importantly, it’s a kind of laughter that catches like wildfire. While the Great Elders chiseled and crafted
literary texts, the heirs of Bedos and Coluche specialize in mocking news commentary about current events. Stand-up has established itself as a
new vision of the political, in the broadest sense of that term. Comedians are the new philosophers, and with their ceremonies they punctuate
the realizations and dawning awarenesses of their fellow citizens.
Between demagoguery and dissing, no need to take ourselves too seriously, really!
RIRE, VOYAGER ET S’ÉPANOUIR / ON LAUGHING, TRAVELING, AND THRIVING
CHRISTOPH STURNY | DIRECTEUR DE MONTREUX-VEVEY TOURISME / DIRECTOR OF MONTREUX-VEVEY TOURISM
Making people laugh, not unlike taking a great vacation, requires rigorous preparation, sound organization, and a certain
knack for being adaptable. In these ways, the team over at the Montreux Comedy Festival accomplishes remarkable work
year after year by bringing the crème de la crème of the French-speaking comic world right to our very doorstep.
Only 22 years old, the Montreux Comedy Festival has particularly blossomed these last few years. In opening itself up to
social networking and new media, it has successfully propelled itself into the global spotlight, generating a renown along the way
that has benefited the entire region of Montreux Riviera!
Thank you to everyone who has made this adventure so exhilarating!
MESSAGES
The canton of Vaud regularly supports the activities of the Montreux Comedy Festival, formerly known as the Festival of Laughter. Bringing to
the stage a wide array of various talents, the Montreux Comedy Festival plays an active role in the international cultural influence enjoyed by
the canton of Vaud. It thereby fulfills the objectives of an excellent initiative to economically develop the Riviera region.
«LE RIRE EST UNE CHOSE SÉRIEUSE AVEC LAQUELLE IL NE
FAUT PAS PLAISANTER» / “LAUGHING’S A SERIOUS MATTER THAT YOU CAN’T JOKE ABOUT”
COLETTE ROSSIER | FONDS CULTUREL RIVIERA (FCR) / RIVIERA CULTURAL FUND (RCF)
It’s in this spirit that the Riviera Cultural Fund (RCF) supports the Montreux Comedy Festival.
Indeed, the RCF, created in 2002 by the ten communes of the Riviera and annually granted 48 francs per resident, makes possible the support
of twenty or so cultural institutions and associations that are active on the Riviera (venues for touring theaters, resident playhouses, classical
music, contemporary music, dance, visual arts, etc.). The RCF also supports the region’s cultural wealth and diversity as it pertains to that «serious
matter that you can’t joke about».
Now a major festival for the Riviera, the Montreux Comedy Festival continues to clip along at an impressive speed without ever giving up its
innovation or commitment to presenting young – and not-so-young – new talent.
And so at the start of this December, between the end of the autumn frosts and the beginning of the winter snows, don’t hesitate to come warm
yourself up by exercising your funny bones with us. While away a moment or two in our company, and let your spirits be lifted.
RIRE EN VOTRE COMPAGNIE / LAUGHING WITH YOU
ROLAND DAPPLES | PRÉSIDENT DE LA FONDATION D’AIDE SOCIALE ET CULTURELLE DU CANTON DE VAUD
PRESIDENT OF THE VAUD CANTON’S SOCIAL AND CULTURAL AID FOUNDATION
| ORGANE DE RÉPARTITION DE LA LOTERIE ROMANDE / DISTRIBUTOR OF PROCEEDS FOR THE SWISS-FRENCH LOTTERY
Proceeds from the Swiss-French Lottery are divided among six French-speaking cantons. They are allocated to a variety of areas ranging from
cultural events, heritage sites, and trainings to social aid, environmental upkeep, and research, just to name a few. Cultural events themselves
represent more than 50% of the funds allotted.
For many years, this distributing foundation within the Vaud Canton has supported the Montreux Comedy Festival. This event has been a real
boon for Swiss comedians and has given budding talent the unique opportunity to be heard and discovered. Such occasions fit in precisely with
the goals that the Swiss-French Lottery has the pleasure to support and encourage. Laughing at ourselves and at particular situations adds to the
balance of all humanity and permits us, according to certain researchers, to live longer… and more happily! For this reason, we are happy to
be a part once again of organizing this festival. We’re hoping its audiences smile and roar with laughter – there could be no greater reward for
those artists both familiar and not-so-familiar taking the stage in Montreux and Vevey, or indeed for the organizers as well.
UN NOUVEAU PARTENARIAT POUR LE FESTIVAL
A NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR THE FESTIVAL
LAURENT SCHLAEFLI | RESPONSABLE MARCHÉ SUISSE ROMANDE, ZURICH ASSURANCES
Zurich Insurance is especially proud and delighted to have associated itself with the Montreux Comedy Festival as
chief sponsor for the past four years. This event, which has been incredibly influential over the cultural landscape
of French-speaking Switzerland, offers an intermingling of artists that allows each and every one of us to find our own enjoyment.
This year’s Festival yet again promises to be exceptional. As a matter of fact, the many comedians that will be performing range from homegrown
Swiss talents to international stand-up artists to young comics only just starting out, all of whom will know how to make us burst out
laughing. As we all know, laughter is the best medicine, so we shouldn’t let a single chance to be healthy pass us by! Here’s wishing everyone
involved – organizers, audiences, and comedians alike – a magnificent Festival experience and lots and lots of laughs!
UNE TRADITION / THE TRADITION
GILLES MARCHAND | DIRECTEUR DE LA RADIO TÉLÉVISION SUISSE / DIRECTOR OF RADIO TELEVISION SWITZERLAND
MESSAGES
As is now the tradition every year in Montreux in December, laughter and comedy
are taking centerstage for a 2011 festival rich with surprises. Decidedly innovative
programming, a healthy dose of interactivity, experienced artists, talented young men and women from
the world of French-speaking comedy: the Festival offers us wonderful programming that we can watch and re-watch on TSR thanks
to the co-production of 3 galas with Radio Television Switzerland, which marshalled crews into action especially for the occasion.
Couleur 3 will also be taking part by supporting the Montreux Comedy Club’s comedians of tomorrow, who can be discovered every day
during the Festival on El Blablo.
In December, comedy will be beaming from all platforms of RTS, which is delighted to continue its collaboration with the Montreux
ETIENNE DE BALASY
DIRECTEUR ARTISTIQUE / ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Etienne de Balasy is a regular of the stage. He started his career in classical drama, learning Molière with Jean-Laurent Cochet, before giving in
to the siren call of contemporary comedy. Since then, he has played on stages in France and Switzerland and directed the likes of Patrick Timsit,
Jean-Luc Lemoine, Manu Payet, and, more recently, Julie Victor and Eric Antoine.
Most notably, however, the Artistic Director of the Montreux Comedy Festival has been a longtime traveling companion of the Festival, where
he regularly organizes gala events that bring festivities to life for the enjoyment of audiences both in the Stravinski Auditorium and in front of
television screens at home.
This year’s roster of events includes many programs designed to create and discover new Swiss and French talent. The galas promise meetings
both excellent and improbable: with the as-of-yet never attempted partnering of Jean Lemoine and Chantal Lauby, a veritable clash of the titans
is all but inevitable; with Eric Antoine, comedy and magic will become one; and with Les Chevaliers du Fiel, the hilarity will be served up in
generous portions.
Everyone from the new, French-speaking comedy scene will be there to make an appearance, and surprises (only good ones) lie in wait at every
turn. Every night as part of the Montreux Comedy Club, a joyful spot of genuine comedy cabaret, the comedians of tomorrow will put their talents
on full display. And in not many years from now, you’ll say, “Ah yes, I saw him first in Montreux. I found out about him thanks to the Festival.”
Discovery, innovation, celebration, and creation: these are the key words for this year’s 21 st annual festival event!
The Montreux Comedy Festival gears up for what is already getting billed the rumble in the comedy jungle: Chantal Lauby and Jean-
Luc Lemoine together at last. Every indication was that these two would be great friends, but wouldn’t you know it? Jean-Luc has a
tendency for macho rants… and well, Chantal’s a bit of a feminist. You’ll be ringside not just for this exceptional gala evening, but for
what promises to be the fight of the century and a clash of the titans! Surrounded by their respective he-men and she-women of comedy
combat, our two hosts will vigorously defend their turf. Let the games begin!
After months of repairs, the Montreux Comedy Festival has been completely renovated! And an entire generation of new Swiss and
French comedians is taking the stage to inspect the premises, with two totally improbable real-estate agents, Les Chevaliers du Fiel, as
their guides. We can only hope these hilarious teens know how to leave the place in exactly the condition they found it – but somehow
we kind of doubt it! If it means having as much fun as we inevitably will cracking up with this crew, then we’re more than ready to give
the place a new coat of paint!
The magic of live television and magic live on television! With his always incredible, totally original tricks, Eric Antoine, the most screwball
magician of all time, will set the pace for this closing-night gala, which will be broadcast live on France 4. The lineup he’s heading is
nothing less than stunning, and although Harry Potter only comes up to his waist (Daniel Radcliffe: 5 feet 4 inches, Eric Antoine: 6 feet
8 inches), even our beloved magician would have trouble making all the talent disappear from this stage. Simply put, anyone who had
a comic hit in 2011 will be there.
The Closing Gala will be preceded by the presentation of the fourth François Silvant Award.
THÉÂTRE DE POCHE DE LA GRENETTE
NOMAN HOSNI
«SORTEZ DE MA TÊTE»
Vendredi 2 décembre | 19h00 / Friday, December 2 | 7:00pm
Écrit par / Written by: Noman Hosni
Ils sont combien là-haut ? Difficile à dire puisque Noman Hosni tire tous azimuts.
D’ailleurs, quel meilleur
“GET OUT OF MY HEAD”
How many of those guys are up there, anyway? Hard to say because no one’s safe when Noman Hosni takes aim with all barrels
blazing. But then, what better target than himself? Half-Tunisian, half-Iraqi, he pokes fine-tuned fun at questions of identity but doesn’t
limit himself to that alone. A keen observer and perfectionist, he mocks the behaviors and phobias of his peers with infectious energy and
devastating charm… Noman personifies what he calls the “Swiss attitude”: stay cool no matter what !
ARNAUD TSAMÈRE
«CHOSE PROMISE»
Samedi 3 décembre | 18h00 / Saturday, December 3 | 6:00pm
Co-écrit par / Co-written by: Arnaud Joyet & François Rollin
Non. Bien sûr que non.
“A PROMISE MADE”
Patrice Valenton, an unassuming economics professor, takes the stage… not for some self-important display of
vanity, but to honor a promise he once solemnly swore to a friend who was very drunk and consequently killed
in a very stupid car accident. Could you possibly refuse to support such a nobly humane endeavor? No. Of course not.
CHRIS ESQUERRE
Dimanche 4 décembre | 15h00 / Sunday, December 4 | 3:00pm
Écrit par / Written by: Chris Esquerre
24
Why would you spend an hour letting yourself be told what to do by a madman who believes in slapping his kids when they get up in the
morning as a preventative measure for the idiotic things they’ll do later in the day? Because it’s Chris Esquerre telling you, and no way, no how
does anyone refuse to go along with his preposterous and incontestable theories. The premise of the show? The creator himself puts it best:
“I have no agenda. I do, however, have my heart set on sharing my vast knowledge with you because I know everything about everything,
and that’s fairly unusual. One thing’s for sure: this show ain’t crap.”
Laurent Ruquier
“VERY, VERY, HIGH-SPEED CONNECTION”
Olivier de Benoist comes from a large family (he grew up with 6 brothers).
Well-bred, he received a strict and religious education, which can probably
explain why this perfect son-in-law look of his. A brilliant law student,
and despite his passion for magic, Olivier de Benoist chose humor.
We certainly won’t keep that against him! In 2002, he acted in Registered
Pattern, a show written by Benoît Poelvoorde. With a success under his belt,
he wrote his first play, Mother Anonymous. Since 2005, he mixes sketches
and magic in a stand-up show entitled High Speed Connection, followed
by Very High Speed Connection and Very Very High Speed Connection.
His latest show is such a triumph that he is actually touring all over France. In 2011, he raised his profile thanks to his performance
in the popular tv show Last Comic Standing on France 2.
The show
Men have been mistreated by the feminine sex for many centuries – on that fact, all scientists agree! Men, come join the ranks
of the oppressed, and ladies, come witness how it is you came to power… Faced with the dictatorship of women, Olivier de Benoist
has designated himself “Spokesman of Men.”
How courageous!
“This is one funny comrade to have. A big beanpole of a guy, full of talent, coolness, and nerve – the kind of guy that audiences adore. And let there be no mistake
about that: the theater is packed to the rafters. In the middle of a recession, that’s really saying something, isn’t it?” Figaroscope
“‘I think seducing’s extremely hard…’ confides Olivier de Benoist. He apparently succeeds at it very well.” Télérama
“He brings the tradition of the satirical cabaret entertainer back to life. His comic force lies in the writing and construction of his great texts.” Laurent Ruquier
An overwhelming success at last year’s Festival, the Montreux Comedy Club is back at it! New in 2011: a web casting that will allow winners
to actually appear on the Montreux Comedy Club stage.
Organized in collaboration with Dailymotion, the event’s conception was auspicious, and it can proudly boast to having Chantal Lauby as its godmother.
Between June 20 th and September 30 th , 2011, all participants posted videos of their sketches online. Visitors to either Dailymotion or the Festival’s
28
website had until October 31 st , 2011, to watch the videos hosted there and vote on their favorite artist. The comedians voted on by the majority
of viewers will participate in the final casting before a jury of comedy and media professionals. Every evening,
the winners will be invited to appear onstage at the Montreux Comedy Club during the Festival. And so every day, surprises await Festival audiences.
For Etienne de Balasy (Artistic Director of the Festival), the Club is “a resolutely festive place where you can drink, laugh,
and meet young artists. I’m hoping the Montreux Comedy Club will become a warm, welcoming place of free expression and
joy, where groups of friends make up the audience. Every evening as part of the program, there’ll be two comics, one French
and one Swiss, who have been handpicked by the Festival, in addition to the winner of the Dailymotion contest.”
If you’re in need of someone who laughs and expresses himself freely, you can count on the talented and charismatic Noman Hosni, who will be
appearing onstage every evening. Master of the house in practically every way, Noman will take charge of the Club and put himself in service of the
comedians of tomorrow.
“I’m really delighted that the Festival puts this much trust in me. I intend to make people laugh. I hope to put myself in the service of the comedians
and audience, establish a good atmosphere, warm up the room, and hand a nice stage over to the participants so they don’t get too stressed out. I’d
also like to allow opportunities for improvisation. And well, I get a kick out of being surrounded by fellow comedians. I hope to discover great talent
and make new friends along the way.”
Improvisation isn’t always a story of two teams competing against one another.
Quite on the contrary! A different approach came about in 2008 when five improv comedians decided
to put on a show featuring long stretches of improvisation. Having already participated in contests sponsored by
the Vaud canton’s improv league, they conceived their show using innovative constraints and greater interactivity with the audience.
After a few months of rehearsal, they performed their show at the Théâtre de Poche de la Grenette. The success was immediate, and the public
wanted more! The comedians continued on performing short improvisations, favoring spontaneity over competition much to audiences’ delight.
And it was very funny!
MESSAGES
22 e MontreuxComedyFestival
WEB TV
THE STARS OF THE WEB ARE COMING TO MONTREUX!
The Montreux Comedy Festival’s Web TV offers access to everything that’s happening on the stage, in the
wings, and at the galas, in addition to streaming the best sketches from this year’s participating comedians.
Be sure to check it out on either the Festival’s website or Dailymotion.
WEB TV
But the Festival’s web channel also allows you to see your favorite artists in offbeat and totally wild or graphic settings.
After the “In Bed With” concept in 2009, where comedians met up in a snug, little bed, and Divan Express in 2010, where your favorite stars were
given over to the good care of Dr. Abbigaël to say nothing of the Comité de la Claque residents, the 2011 Festival has a really great surprise in
store for you. The Festival’s “Web Residents” will actually be on the Palmashow. The two comedians will treat us to a show especially created for
this year’s 22 nd annual Festival.
“WEB RESIDENT”
Grégoire Ludig and David Marsais have been friends since grade school, when sketches by the Inconnus and the Nuls were already making deep
impressions on them. They created the Palmashow in 2002, appeared onstage in 2003 with Men in Blagues and Ambiance!, and again in 2006
with Trucs. But their parodic takes on cult movies like Batman, Indiana Jones, and The Lord of the Rings were what made them known to a wider
audience: those videos created internet buzz with millions and millions of hits. In 2008, they created their production association Blagbuster with
their producer, Jonathan Barré.
From September to December 2010, the Palmashow produced a parody program for channel Direct 8 called The Insane History of the Palmashow.
Over the course of 52 episodes, Greg and David played two joke writers that the channel had hired by mistake. Ah, the splendor and decadence of
television! After its resounding success, the Palmashow created Very Bad Blagues. This series of sketches taking a look at everyday events is broadcast
daily on Direct 8. It plays host to such guests as Élie Semoun, Ten Minutes to Lose, and Norman Makes Videos.
Next up on its roster are Chantal Lauby and Florence Foresti…
What have you cooked up for us for the Festival’s Web Channel?
For the Festival’s Web Channel, the Palmashow has prepared for you
a series of 70s videos in a police station staffed by useless, incompetent,
typically French police officers. Racist, homophobic, anti-artist, and completely
idiotic. A complaint department, in the end.
The Montreux Comedy Festival is a breeding ground for comedians. Are you
going to take advantage of that to subject them to a serious working-over?
We’re happy to hear you say “serious working-over,” a term that has been
forgotten since at least 1970. Everything will depend on what the comedian will
have lost, or on his or her reason for coming. But yes, we love the hard blows,
the big deals. We’re not here to knit things, although, in Montreux in December, a
sweater’s always handy to have.
Who are your ultimate touchstones of humor?
The Nuls, the Inconnus, SNL, all the Zucker Abrahams Zucker guys, Bézu, and Jean-
Luc Reichmann.
Where does this attraction to the 70s come from? Feeling nostalgic, comrade?
During the 70s, wearing a moustache was required, just like short jean shorts
and tank tops. Girls were naked in movies all the time, and people could laugh
at everything.
Montreux rhymes with… ?
Stool.
Rumor has it that you’re preparing a return to the stage and a movie. Can you tell us more about all that?
Is it the guy who whispers in horses’ ears that told you that? Because he’s talking crap, so don’t listen to him. In fact, that guy, he’s, like, saying
horrible things in your ear, like, “Yeah, you’re goin’ to the slaughterhouse, dirty mule”, or even, “Does that Black Stallion have his papers?”
Anyway, he’s a dick.
MONTREUX COMEDY AWARDS
Meilleure Sitcom
Come Fly With Me (Little Britain Production/BBC) – Grande-Bretagne
The Bold Buddies (Globo TV) – Brésil
Friday Night Dinner (Popper Pictures/Big Talk/Channel 4/BBC) – Grande-Bretagne
Meilleur Sketch-Show
The Pranker (Big Talk Productions/Running Bare) – Grande-Bretagne
Broken Comedy (RedSeven Entertainment) – Allemagne
Portlandia (Broadway Video Entertainment/IFC) – États-Unis
32
Meilleur Programme Spécial
Otis Lee Crenshaw Live (Open Mike Productions/BBC Worldwide) – Grande-Bretagne
Comedy Club: Live in Lagos 2 (Mnet Africa) – Nigéria
LOL :-) (Far More Distribution) – Canada
Web Therapy (Is or isn’t Entertainment/Showtime) – États-Unis
List of Nominees :
Best Sitcom
Come Fly with me (Little Britain Production/BBC) – UK
Your view of airports and the people who work there will never be the same again, as the BBC’s cameras have been given unprecedented access to
one of Britain’s busiest airport terminals. For months, the producers have followed anyone and everyone to produce this portrait of life at the cutting
edge of aviation. From check-in staff to cabin crew, from pilots to paparazzi, and from low-cost airline owners to their unfortunate passengers, all
human life is here – and all played by Lucas and Walliams.
The Bold Buddies (Globo TV) – Brasil
On the air since 2009, the two friends Pedrao (Marcius Melhem) and Jorginho (Leandro Hassum) entertain the sunday afternoon audience with their
awkward behavior and goofiness on the series “The Bold Buddies” broadcasted by Globo Tv. Most of the funny situations take place in the building
where they live and interact with their beautiful next door neighbor. The show is inspired on the fifties, with a peaceful neighborhood that gains new
atmosphere with the troublemaker mates.
Friday Night Dinner (Popper Pictures/Big Talk/Channel 4/BBC) – UK
Adam and Jonny view Friday night dinner as a necessary annoyance – necessary because they get fed, and annoying because they have to spend
the evening with Mum and Dad. It’s not that Mum and Dad aren’t wonderful. They really are. But Dad slugs ketchup straight from the bottle, Mum is
obsessed with Masterchef and even Grandma likes to wear her new bikini around the house.
T’es pas la seule ! (Rita Productions/RTS/Bavaria Int.) – Switzerland
Women with nothing in common take over a biodynamic vineyard at a moment’s notice and come up against misunderstanding, greed, and their own
incompetence. Produced by Rita Productions in collaboration with RTS, a daring mix of heritage and modernity.
Best Sketch Show
Scènes de Ménages (M6 Studios & NooN / Kabo Productions) – France
Everyday scenes of couples across four generations facing different problems and circumstances. Marion and Cédric go back and forth between sappy
baby talk and unexpected clashes. José bores Liliane stiff with his legendary dullness. Huguette and Raymond exchange bitter insults rather than sweet
nothings. And Fabien and Emma discover what life is like for young parents… No blow’s too low for these couples joined for better or for worse.
The Pranker (Big Talk Productions/Running Bare) – UK
The Pranker is a brand new hidden camera comedy show featuring a cast of unique and bizarre characters all played by one man, comedian Ross Lee.
Ranging from the plain daft to the utterly outrageous, the many guises of ‘The Pranker’ blaze a trail of amusement, frustration and bewilderment as
unsuspecting members of the public are caught on camera.
Broken Comedy (RedSeven Entertainment) – Germany
Broken Comedy is presented by Carolin Kebekus who guides with short stand-ups through the episodes. Her performances are by no means usual
introductions – they rather serve as a possibility for Carolin to chat about her environment and things she loves, hates, or is engaged in. Each episode
has a main theme that runs like a common thread through the show.
Portlandia (Broadway Video Entertainment/IFC) – USA
IFC’s hit comedy series Portlandia stars Fred Armisen (SNL) and Carrie Brownstein (Wild Flag, Sleater-Kinney) and draws viewers into a satirical and
dreamy rendering of Portland. Among the series variety of wonderfully eccentric characters are Peter and Nance, a bohemian couple caught up in
the organic and local food movement; Bryce Shivers and Lisa Everesman, an arty and obsessive couple; and Toni and Candice, the formerly activist,
self-involved shopkeepers.
34
Best Comedy Special
Otis lee Crenshaw Live (Open Mike Productions/BBC Worldwide) – UK
Live on stage Redneck comedian and ex con Otis Lee Crenshaw performs his whiskey laced songs, with thoughts of women, trailer parks and southern
white trash. Otis relives his memories of prison life through sharp one liners and songs, as ever accompanied by his band The Black Liars, with Orson
Carson on Guitar and Alvy Ronson on double Bass.
Comedy Club: Live in Lagos 2 (Mnet Africa) - Nigeria
Comedy Club is a stand-up comedy show made to television, showcasing Africa’s top comedians and shot on location. Thus far, three seasons
have been shot – two in Lagos, Nigeria and one on Mombasa, Kenya. The format of the show is such that two
comedians perform per episode. The first is usually an “up ‘n coming” comedian who is less known in the industry
and the other is a well-known, established comedian. In Comedy Club: Live In Lagos II, we invited comedians to
Lagos from Zambia, South Africa and Uganda as well.
Le Grand Restaurant (Blue Red/Production du Colonel/Ki m’aime me suive) – France
Sixteen personalities. One big restaurant. The owner, the staff, the American pianist… And life, love, adultery,
tradition, sexuality, money… or loneliness.
Best Non-Verbal Comedy
LOL :-) (Far More Distribution) – Canada
LOL (laughing out loud) is a unique new series of visual comedy clips without dialogue. Each clip averages 15 to 90 seconds in length. Entirely shot
on location in Mexico, Canada, France, England, and elsewhere, LOL will take you to wild and exotic places as castaways stranded on a deserted
island or explorers deep in the jungle, as well as to beaches and scenes from the Vietnam War. It will rewrite history with a twist on historical events
such as Christopher Columbus first steps on America’s soil.
Best Online Comedy
Web Therapy (Is or isn’t Entertainment/Showtime) – USA
Fiona Wallice (Lisa Kudrow) is a therapist with no patience. Tired of hearing about people’s dreams and feelings for fifty long minutes at a stretch, she
devises a new kind of treatment, the three-minute video chat. And still, the sessions end up being largely about her.
Best Production Company
Hat Trick – USA/UK
Hat Trick is one of the UK’s most successful independent production companies, their output immediately identified with popular and award-winning
programming, light entertainment and drama, and now also emerging into digital media. The serie Episodes has also been nominated for three 2011
Emmy Awards: Matt LeBlanc (Outstanding Lead Actor in a comedy series), David Crane & Jeffrey Klarik (Outstanding writing for a comedy series),
Mark Thomas (Outstanding original main title theme music).
Best French Web Serie
Dailymotion teams up with the Montreux Comedy Festival to name the Best Comic Web Series in French under the auspices of the Montreux Comedy
Awards. The four series receiving the most votes will make up the roster of final nominees. The winner, chosen by a jury of professionals presided over
by Patrice Leconte, will be invited to accept the prize in person at the final ceremonies of the Montreux Comedy Awards.
MONTREUX COMEDY AWARDS
PATRICE LECONTE
PRESIDENT OF THE JURY
The Montreux Comedy Awards are fortunate to debut under the mischievous and impassioned
eye of Patrice Leconte, who is serving as president of the jury. Director of such cult movies as
Ridicule, The Girl on the Bridge, The Hairdresser’s Husband, Tandem, and of course French Fried
Vacation, his next movie, The Suicide Shop, will be released in France in May 2012. A quick
interview.
Patrice Leconte, why did you agree to be the president of the jury for the Montreux
Comedy Awards?
When the Montreux Comedy Festival invited me to be president of the jury, I said “yes” right away because I love novelty.
I have
juried a few movie festivals already. It was always both very awkward and very exciting to judge the work of people who do the same thing I do. I
see a lot of plays, comedy shows, and one-man shows. I’m not an expert in the field, but I am an excellent audience member. I know I’d feel more
comfortable giving my opinion on criteria for personal taste and laughter.
What do you expect from these Awards?
I expect to be surprised and, more than anything, laugh! In this time of recession, we’re watching the emergence of what’s essentially a spontaneous
generation: there have never been as many comedians on the stage as there are right now. Moreover, the Awards selection is international. I’m not
in front of the TV or internet a whole lot, for lack of time, so I’m really happy to be able to discover formats and comedy genres coming from all over.
You know, I’m very curious. They say curiosity is a vice – me, I think it’s a virtue.
Photo: Karl Lagerfeld
What is your point of reference as far as humor is concerned?
Ever since I was little, Groucho Marx has always been with me. I love his talent, his aplomb, his irreverence, his mindset. He’s timeless and universal
in this overly politically correct period we’re going through.
MONTREUX COMEDY MARKET
1 er au 5 décembre | 9h00 à 17h00 | Montreux
1 st to 5 th December | from 9:00am to 5:00pm | Montreux
With cross-border comedy mania striking the global entertainment industry, the Montreux Comedy Festival, one of the longest running comedy events
in the world, will add a business networking element to its annual edition.
This first edition of The Montreux Comedy Market will be specifically focused on the television adaptation of international comedy formats, original
video content and stand-up routines celebrating modern comedy.
The market’s program will include informative sessions examining the challenges of adapting international comedy concepts; pre-organized, one-onone
meetings between television programmers, talent scouts, right owners and comedy content producers and networking functions.
Gregoire Furrer, President of The Montreux Comedy Festival: "We are justifiably very proud of our event which is one of the ‘must go’ destinations
for comedy. However, mindful of the recent proliferation of new television and web channels, we want to add a relevant marketplace in today’s fast
evolving comedy professional space that engages comedy industry insiders and opens doors to even greater co-operation between talent and talentbrokers
from all over the world.”
36
Patrick Jucaud, General Manager of Basic Lead: “ The Montreux Comedy Festival is one of the most important venues for new and established
talent. By extending the reach of the Festival to include a marketplace with business participants from around the globe, we will benefit performers,
writers and producers by giving them the opportunity to meet the right kind of people to take their careers to the next level. The commercial aspect
of the market, which has been missing from the Festival until now, will enable programming and production executives to engage with the very best
talent in one location in the heart of Europe.”
MONTREUX COMEDY MARKET
What makes us laugh? And how does comedy arrive at making us burst out loud? There are
specific mechanisms in good comedy and not only funny writing is necessary but also timing,
execution and acting. This doesn’t promise that good comedy is universal, but it points out that it can
be transformed for different purposes and for specific audiences.
The International Montreux Comedy Conference will give a peek behind the mechanisms of laughter and provide an outlook on how successful
adaptations can be achieved. Because in the end, laughter itself is indeed universal. The International Montreux Comedy Conference will host keynote
speeches and panel discussions from guests around the globe who will share with our audiences their insight and expertise on the comedy genre.
PITCH DATING
During the Montreux Comedy Market, which is taking place for the first time this year, the Montreux Comedy Festival is launching a new initiative in
collaboration with the SACD and Alain Kappauf: Pitch Dating.
What better way to foster networking and project development than to allow young scriptwriters to meet one of the gurus of the profession?
Young authors had until November 15 th , 2011, to send a 2- to 3-minute sample of a comic series project. Applications, which must include a
treatment, a cover letter, and one complete episode, will be read by Alain Kappauf, producer of such cult series as Kaamelott, Camera Café, Scènes de
Ménages, etc. Four winners will be invited to the Festival, where they will attend both a one-on-one meeting about their project and a script-doctoring
seminar led by Alain Kappauf. The lucky writer chosen as Alain Kappauf’s favorite will receive personalized care and attention during the Festival, from
rewrites through to full production of a pilot that will be presented at the Montreux Market and distributed via our official platforms (Festival website,
Dailymotion, and Facebook).
ALAIN KAPPAUF
ALAIN KAPPAUF
SERIES PRODUCER
What motivated you to oversee the Montreux Comedy Festival’s Pitch Dating initiative?
I’m always open to guiding and welcoming projects and authors. Creating is central to the work that I do, so I’m consequently very drawn to new
ideas.
PITCH DATING
What do you expect from these young authors?
I expect to be surprised and, more than anything, that they’ll venture off the beaten paths – that they’ll be creative, innovative, because I see too
many projects come through that are all in the same vein or taken from preexisting concepts. I expect to read projects with universal themes that can
be bounced around, developed, and realized. In short, I expect to pursue my work as a producer.
What would you say is the basis for a successful project?
The most important quality of every project is its universality. An idea that speaks to all cultures, that might get turned down. A good example would
be the movie Groundhog Day.
The candidates already have a list of pretty specific requirements. For you, what are the advantages of writing constraints?
For me, necessity is the mother of invention.
What are your touchstones of comedy?
My tastes are very broad because I am, first and foremost, a very good audience and open to anything. I like comedy that sets off laughter by reflex,
laughter that’s liberating, which is the case with Video Gag or Benny Hill, or even with the kings of slapstick like Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy. But I’m
also a big fan of Airplane! and its sequels. My pantheon would consist of Woody Allen, Peter Sellers, Monty Python, the Marx Brothers and, currently,
Ricky Gervais, Seinfeld, and Larry David.
