Sociable mais… sauvage ~ Saba… et ses 1400 habitants
qui la chérissent jalousement… On les comprend en arrivant sur
ce bout de terre presque méconnu des Antilles, tout de verdure
vêtu, et dont l’hospitalité et les décors volcaniques invitent à se
ressourcer. Ici, c’est d’une ambiance bien particulière dont on
vient s’imprégner : celle de la vraie convivialité, quand on partage
avec les locaux des sourires avenants, celle d’une osmose totale
avec la nature et ses lois, quand la brume s’accroche au ciel,
apaisant avec douceur – au moins pour quelques heures – notre
tempérament d’hyperactif impatient.
Peu peuplée, plutôt réservée, Saba aime à se dissimuler sous
l’ombre mystique de son volcan : du haut de ses 877 mètres, il
met tous les randonneurs – amateurs ou bien entraînés - au défi
de le gravir. Et décidément, Mont Scenery – de son petit nom
(le plus haut sommet des Pays-Bas dont Saba dépend) – donne
le vertige, avec ses falaises abruptes qui plongent dans le bleu
profond de la mer des Caraïbes ou de l’océan Atlantique.
Wildly outgoing ~ Saba’s 1,400 residents sure love her
deeply. Which makes complete and utter sense, as one lands on this
tiny and often overlooked piece of Caribbean land — one dressed in
green and characterised by its enticing hospitality and volcanic
scenery. Here, people come seeking a singular atmosphere: that of
true friendliness as found in smiles shared with the local population;
that of a perfect harmony with the laws of nature, when mist and skies
mix and pacify - at least for a few hours - many a hyperactive temper.
Saba’s low population density and propension to secrecy stem from
its 2,877ft high volcano’s mystical presence: putting skilled and
amateur hikers alike to the test of climbing to the top. As a matter of
fact, Mont Scenery - the highest peak in the Netherlands, which
Saba is a part of) - is vertigo-inducing, with steep cliffs diving into
the deep blue Caribbean sea or the Atlantic Ocean. Do not bother
looking for a beach! There are none to be found around here…
As we said before: Saba attracts a different breed of visitors,
hiking and diving lovers in particular.
