A Dominican Biblical institute housed at the priory of St Stephen
since 1890, the École biblique et archéologique française de
Jérusalem welcomes students and researchers from all over the
world and offers them a unique study experience.
The Ecole thus continues the project of its founder, Father Marie-
Joseph Lagrange: to study the Bible in the land of the Bible, to
bring together both ‘document’ and ‘monument’ in an academically
rigorous way. To do this, the Ecole offers an exceptional study

Continuity and Transmission
Dear Friends of the Ecole biblique,
The Ecole has experienced a major renewal of its teaching
body over the last two years, thanks to the arrival of several young
Dominicans with degrees in the Biblical sciences. This injection of
new blood was urgently needed following the retirement of a generation
of professors who have all shaped the life of the Ecole, in some
cases over three or four decades. The death earlier this year of fr. Francolino
Gonçalves, expert on the prophetic books, and the imminent
departure from Jerusalem of fr. Marcel Sigrist, renowned Assyriologist
and former director of the Ecole biblique, invite us to reflect on
continuity and transmission.
The Ecole biblique accomplishes its mission with very modest means:
our finances bear no comparison to similar university institutions.
Nevertheless, the Ecole holds its own thanks to the quality and commitment
of its members, and to its capacity to endure through crises,
which this land does not lack. Continuity is one of our strengths.
To be productive, this continuity presupposes that the elders know
how to hand on the received heritage, and that the younger ones know
how to receive it and make it bear fruit. It is a privilege to have the elders
we have. This also places a demand on the new generation, which
needs to show itself worthy of it.
Recevoir et transmettre : c’est une loi de la vie dont l’École biblique
fait actuellement une vive expérience alors qu’elle accueille une
génération de nouveaux professeurs qui mesure ce qu’elle doit à des
aînés remarquables qui ont fait la réputation de l’École. Un beau défi
pour tous.
