The art of timber construction | Chinese Models
Guided Tour: Sunday, 8.11.2009 at 12.00 a.m.
At the turning between 19 th and 20 th centuries, Buddhist temples, ancient palaces and
regional profane buildings were crafted following real, reconstructed or ideal buildings
of the Tang- (7 th -10 th Centuries) and the Ming-Dynasty (14 th -17 th Centuries). They were
meant to form models for teaching and documentation, crafted with utmost precision.
These models display all structural details, especially the elaborate timber jointing,
which are thoroughly reconstructed and documented, and therefore enable studying
the antique buildings. Historic photography as well as building recordings, drawings
and painted architecture brochures enlighten the tradition of Chinese architecture and
ways of construction. The unique collection from the China National Institute of Cultural
Property will be shown for the first time outside China.
