dimensions minimales d’une miniature déterminent quant à elle son contenu significatif
: avec quelle précision la maquette doit-elle s’avérer fidèle au modèle original pour
remplir ses fonctions en termes de contenu et d’esthétique ?
A l’aide d’exemples de représentations à échelle réduite issues de l’univers des art
graphiques et plastiques, nous examinerons le spectre sémantique de la réalisation de
modèles réduits. L’étude sera centrée sur la question de savoir dans quelle mesure le
caractère de « modèle exemplaire » de l’objet reproduit en miniature (et notamment
ici de l’ouvrage architectural à échelle réduite) constitue un aspect caractéristique de
toutes les miniaturisations, dans le sens d’une fonction d’exemplarité. Les contextes de
représentation et de découverte des objets archéologiques sont susceptibles de fournir
des explications quant à la (aux) fonction(s) de ces modèles réduits. Dans la vision
diachronique de ce groupe d’objets de l’Antiquité, leur évolution révèle des ruptures
notoires, résultant de modifications des exigences dans le domaine de la conception
de modèles réduits. Cette tentative de présentation de l’évolution du « petit » a pour
objectif de mieux cerner leurs causes dans le contexte historique de l’époque et les
structures sociales correspondantes.
The meaning of miniature
Considerations on the exemplary in the ancient times
In the archaeological evidence of the ancient culture in the Mediterranean occur
miniatures at all times and in most differential archaeological contexts. The process of
miniaturising happens on various semantic levels:
Approaching a definition of the antique understanding of scale-reduced representations
of persons, objects and architecture, will arise the questions about which categories
of material and size small or large scale can be separated in and from which relation
onwards one would speak of miniaturising in the sense of an exemplary character.
The minimal size of miniatures is being appointed by their meaning: to which level of
detail the model has to obey to the archetype to comply with the desired function
regarding content and aesthetics?
The practised semantic spectrum in the use of miniatures is to be shown by means
of examples of size-reduced plane artistic representations as well as miniaturised
plastic objects. The examination focuses on the question to what extend the exemplary
character of the miniature – in this case especially of miniaturised architecture - forms
an aspect of diminishment in the sense of an exemplary function. The contexts on representation
and finding of the archaeological evidence promise to deliver information
about functions of such models.
On the historical basis of this antique material group appear distinct disruptions, being
the consequence of changing demands to the miniature. To approach their causation
within the very historical frame und social structure respectively, this attempt aims at
demonstrating the development of “the miniature”.
