Models in modern research in Building Archaeology
In architecture models always served the embodiment of complex spatial conditions.
They are common means in the forefront of new building tasks. In contrast, research in
building archaeology concentrates on the past, exhibiting existing conditions,
reconstructing lost or destructed architectural constructions, displaying earlier
conditions and representing their development. Models are employed in two different
ways: actively, using models in their own right of all anticipated conditions or, else,
passively, concerning historic models.
The speech will offer an overview on the range of possibilities, such as the representation
of roofings being entirely conserved, but hardly accessible (e.g. Walhalla close to
Regensburg) and the reconstruction of a ruined temple area varying from a
topographical overall view to detail models including the reconstruction of the original
chromaticity (Aigina, Greece).
Special opportunities for the representation of construction techniques, ranging from
foundations to rooftops, result from section models. Recently, the `Institute of Building
History, Building Archaeology and Heritage Conservation´ is being engaged
increasingly into the research on destructed large roof constructions (e.g. Staircases
at the Residenz Würzburg, St. Stephan in Vienna, Cathedral of Our Lady in Munich).
Models prove an indispensable aid in order to comprehend these complex structures,
which need to be reconstructed from poorly done records, remaining evidence in situ
and historic photographs. Moreover, models only allow for the construction process
of these huge structures to be retraced, being capable of explaining various peculiarities.
On the other hand, historic models have been important sources for research in
building archaeology for a long time, thoroughly displayed by major exhibitions during
the recent decades.
Recording historic models using modern methods in building archaeology can lead to
findings about the designing development, decisively supplementing historic plans and
records by spatiality (e.g. church models by Balthasar Neumann).
Last but not least, in Munich there is an unprecedented treasure: Jakob Sandtner´s
models of the Bavarian ducal towns Munich, Straubing, Landshut, Ingolstadt and Burghausen
dating back to the second half of the 16 th century, which will be visited during
the conference.
