Models in modern research in Building Archaeology<br />

In architecture models always served the embodiment of complex spatial conditions.<br />

They are common means in the forefront of new building tasks. In contrast, research in<br />

building archaeology concentrates on the past, exhibiting existing conditions,<br />

reconstructing lost or destructed architectural constructions, displaying earlier<br />

conditions and representing their development. Models are employed in two different<br />

ways: actively, using models in their own right of all anticipated conditions or, else,<br />

passively, concerning historic models.<br />

The speech will offer an overview on the range of possibilities, such as the representation<br />

of roofings being entirely conserved, but hardly accessible (e.g. Walhalla close to<br />

Regensburg) and the reconstruction of a ruined temple area varying from a<br />

topographical overall view to detail models including the reconstruction of the original<br />

chromaticity (Aigina, Greece).<br />

Special opportunities for the representation of construction techniques, ranging from<br />

fo<strong>und</strong>ations to rooftops, result from section models. Recently, the `Institute of Building<br />

History, Building Archaeology and Heritage Conservation´ is being engaged<br />

increasingly into the research on destructed large roof constructions (e.g. Staircases<br />

at the Residenz Würzburg, St. Stephan in Vienna, Cathedral of Our Lady in Munich).<br />

Models prove an indispensable aid in order to comprehend these complex structures,<br />

which need to be reconstructed from poorly done records, remaining evidence in situ<br />

and historic photographs. Moreover, models only allow for the construction process<br />

of these huge structures to be retraced, being capable of explaining various peculiarities.<br />

On the other hand, historic models have been important sources for research in<br />

building archaeology for a long time, thoroughly displayed by major exhibitions during<br />

the recent decades.<br />

Recording historic models using modern methods in building archaeology can lead to<br />

findings about the designing development, decisively supplementing historic plans and<br />

records by spatiality (e.g. church models by Balthasar Neumann).<br />

Last but not least, in Munich there is an unprecedented treasure: Jakob Sandtner´s<br />

models of the Bavarian ducal towns Munich, Straubing, Landshut, Ingolstadt and Burghausen<br />

dating back to the second half of the 16 th century, which will be visited during<br />

the conference.<br />
