The collection of models in the `Architekturmuseum der TU München´
as instrument for teaching, research and exhibitions
At the `Akademie der Bildenden Künste´ (Academy of fine arts), where the first
architecture class in Bavaria took place in 1809, model building already belonged to
the curriculum.
When in 1868 the architects´ education was transferred to the new `Polytechnische
Hochschule´ (since 1877 `Technische Hochschule´), the teaching materials – drawings,
plaster plastics and models – were handed over to the building faculty’s architectural
collection. In coherence with erecting a new building for the `TH´ by Friedrich von
Thiersch, the collection obtained representative rooms in 1917, where the teaching and
archetype materials were presented.
As a loan the famous cork models from the Wittelsbacher-Sammlung enriched the
collection. A great part of the stock and almost all of the models were lost in
World War II.
Thereafter, the teaching collection was transformed into a research archive because
of the changing way of education. While building up this institution, a great number of
inheritances were taken on, which contained models also, and design planning and
competition works with models were acquired.
In due course of the decades the collection evolved to a mirror of certain architectural
fashions and partialities in model building. Moreover, the collection took on models,
which have been built for teaching means at the institutes of the faculty for architecture.
An exceptional position is being held by two teaching models for roofings dating from
the 17 th and 18 th centuries, surrendered to the archive by the `Germanisches Nationalmuseum´
in 1970.
Models for own collections of the `Architektursammlung´ (since 1989 `Architekturmuseum´)
have been developed with students in seminar courses, in order to
present certain projects three-dimensionally on the one hand and to research on special
constructive or spatial problems, which were communicated didactically
respectively, on the other hand.
The speech will introduce the history and the various forms of architectural models
collected in the `Architekturmuseum´ as well as explicate exemplarily their function in
terms of teaching, research and education.
