Models and the `architectural venture´ in the 19 th century
At the very beginning of the 19 th century during the times of the Empire the use of
models can be ascertained to great extend, e.g for the triumphal arch or the group of
sculptures in the choir of Saint-Denis.
A little bit lateron and during the entire epoch of the Restauration the inhabitants of Paris
could learn to appreciate a different model in large scale: The elephant made from
plaster, set up at the Place of the Bastille by Alavoine. Thereafter, some time around
1845, it comes to creating anew three models for the draft of Saint-Ouen’s new façade
in Rouen.
Approaching the end of the 19 th century Anathole de Baudot ordered a series of models
to be produced, when he gave a lecture on mediaeval architecture at the Place de
Trocadero for architects focusing on heritage conservation.
Later, even, Horta used models for arranging cubatures and proportions of his art
nouveau hotels.
The contribution will attend to clarify the question on similarities between these
miscellaneous initiatives.
