maîtres d’œuvre ou maîtres d’ouvrage. Dans cette collection figure enfin un nombre
très important de maquettes analytiques réalisées par le musée.
Pourquoi, au regard des possibilités offertes aujourd’hui par l’image, avoir recours à
la maquette dans un parcours muséal permanent ? Pourquoi un musée s’engage-t-il
dans une politique de création de maquettes ? Le recours à la maquette pour raconter
l’histoire de l’architecture met en lumière la complexité de cet objet et la variété de
questions qu’il peut soulever pour une institution muséale. Quel est son statut ? Quel
est son pouvoir narratif ? Quelle liberté de présentation offre-t-il ? Cette communication
s’appuiera sur l’expérience du musée des Monuments français et les pratiques d’autres
institutions.
Architectural models – a necessity? The example of a permanent
circuit.
The `Cité de l´architecture et du patrimoine´ opened in September 2007. In the museum
`Musée des Monuments français´ an important renewal had been induced by
combining the restauration of the historic collections´ galleries (ranging from 12 th to 18 th
century) with the formation of a new gallery, attending to architecture from 1850 until
today. The ensemble of the circuit contains numerous models dating from 1785 to
2007. Collected to represent the course of architectural history, their origins are dissimilar
and, actually, indicate different questions: some have been made to teach, some
are competition models, drafting- or technical models originating from architects´ or
engineers´ offices, and else, there are demonstration models by principals or
developers.
Last but not least, the collection contains an important number of analytic models,
realized by the museum.
Why would one employ models for a permanent museum circuit – regarding the
modern opportunities of images? Why does a museum engage into the policy of
creating architectural models? The fallback on architectural models to explain the
history of architecture sheds light on the objects´ complexity and the universalism of
questions arising to a museum institution. What about their status? Which is their
narrative potential? Which liberty in presentation is being offered? The discussion will
be based on experiences of the `Musée des Monuments français´ and practices of
other institutions.
