Aims of the conference “Models and Architecture” at the
Technische Universtät München in November 2009
A European research cooperation between universities in Germany, France and Italy
aims at organising a sequence of three international scientific conferences on the topic
of “Models and Architecture”. Next to the `Technische Universität München´, initiating
institutes also are `École de Chaillot – Cité de l´architecture et du patrímoine´ and
`École pratique de hautes etudes (EPHE) Sorbonne, Paris´ in France as well as Universities
in Italy.
The Munich conference will be the starting point of a sequence, commencing with a
presentation of the research states within various participating countries or institutions
respectively and a classification of the vast field into main focuses.
The conference opens a stage for international exchange between the participating
professors and scientists of 11 Universities and three renowned research institutions
with their colleagues from scientific research as well as architects and engineers.
Within the conference methods and research results can be discussed und new scientific
field could be disclosed, even new cooperation opportunities could be ascertained.
The internationality of the participants will raise the horizon over disciplinary and national
limitations. The conference will be profoundly based at the `Technische Universität
München´ with Prof. Winfried Nerdinger from the `Architekturmuseum´, Prof. Manfred
Schuller from the `Institute of Building History, Building Archaeology and Heritage Conservation´,
Prof. Richard Horden from the `Institute for architecture and product design´
and, else, Prof. Rainer Barthel from the `Institute for structural design´ partcipating.
Contributing partner at the TUM also is the institute for `Raumkunst und Lichtgestaltung´.
Topics
1. Review on the current status of research
Basically the conference aims at defining the topic more precisely. The focus will rest
on a review of the current status of research regarding models´ purposes and dates of
origin.
2. Time Layers: Ancient World, Mediaeval Times and early Modern Age, Modern Age
Within the conference miscellaneous motivations for model building as well as the
different model types throughout the times will be examined. Ranging from the Ancient
World to the Modern Age, architectural models occur in utmost differing contexts:
from sepulchral additions in burial rites via visualisations of actual building projects to
propaganda and utopia.
3. Model presentation, building archaeology and heritage conservation
Detail models and systematic sequences of models showing selected parts of buildings
only, such as roof constructions or church portici, or models of a special type of
buildings have been built ever since. These collections of teaching or archetype models
have been used to fan out certain types of architecture, similarly to the use of handwritten
copies of books in Mediaeval Times. This field includes models as method to
