Literature • Littérature / L’ air du temps 2 3 Une immersion africaine… ~ Âgé de 34 ans, ce jeune écrivain à l’allure frêle et à la douceur touchante, réussit un admirable tour de force littéraire. Ce Petit Pays, c’est le Burundi, là où l’auteur a grandi. Si son père est français, sa mère est rwandaise, et il a vécu toute son adolescence dans cette Afrique des Grands Lacs, bientôt ravagée par les conflits ethniques qui ensanglantèrent la région. Petit Pays, c’est un récit d’enfant ; pas de l’autofiction, ni des souvenirs, mais bien une pure création. Le héros, c’est vrai, ressemble beaucoup à son auteur : même histoire familiale, presque le même prénom (Gabriel au lieu de Gaël). Mais de quoi ce livre parle-t-il ? He bien d’une enfance rêvée, ressuscitée par une plume de grand talent. Sous nos yeux, c’est le vert paradis des amours enfantines, comme disait Baudelaire, qui sort de l’oubli et du passé : jeux de bandes entre garçons, fantasmes de bagarres et de défis, nature propice aux cabanes et aux grandes évasions... Un perroquet qui imite la voix de son père, et le réveille trop tôt le matin. Les excursions sur le lac Kivu. Cette famille de gamins des rues qui s’appellent les Kinanira Boyz. Cinq garçons inséparables, dont des jumeaux, Armand et Gino : On rêvait beaucoup, on s’imaginait, le cœur impatient, les joies et les aventures que nous réservait la vie. En résumé, on était tranquilles et heureux, dans notre planque du terrain vague de l’impasse. A MUST-READ FOR (ALMOST) ALL AGES! A Burundian Childhood ~ This 34-year-old writer, fragile in appearance and displaying touching tenderness, has accomplished an amazing literary feat. The “Petit Pays,” or little country, of the title is Burundi, where the author was born to a French father and a Rwandan mother. It was in the country of Great Lakes that Gaël spent his youth, a place that would later be ravaged by bloody ethnic conflict. Although a tale of a childhood, “Petit Pays” is not the tale of his childhood. True, the resemblance is there—the same family history, nearly the same name (Gabriel instead of Gaël). So what is the novel about? A childhood dreamed, brought to life again by a talented way with words. Across the pages, “the green paradise of childhood love,” as Baudelaire would say, emerges from what was forgotten and past. Of games played among the band of boys, fantastic fights and triumphs, nature ceding to secret places and great escapes. A parrot imitating his father’s voice, waking him too early. Excursions to Lake Kivu. And the gang of street children called The Kinanira Boys, five inseparable boys, including twins Armand and Gino: “We daydreamed often, conjuring, with an impatient heart, all of life’s joys and adventures.
