Elephantastique animals
大 象 —“ 温 柔 巨 人 ”
One of the first letters of the Thai alphabet is
“Chor”, the same letter as for “chang” which means
elephant in Thai language. In every school book,
this letter is called the elephant letter, though
Thai children have a close bond with elephants
from an early age.
The nation itself is closely related to elephants:
the animal plays a special role in Thai culture and
they are highly revered. In the past, Thai kings
rode on them to fight the Burmese and today,
the Royal Thai Navy features the white elephant
on its flag. Meanwhile, Thailand’s most popular
brew is call the elephant (“chang” in Thai).
To honor this most gentle, yet powerful animal,
March 13th was selected as “National Thai
Elephant Day”: it is also the day that the white
elephant was chosen to be “National Animal and
Symbol of Thailand”. We would like to dedicate
this March issue of Chang Puak Magazine
(which means the White Elephant Magazine in
Thai) to this kind, intelligent and loving animal.
Moreover, we wish to raise public awareness to
protect and conserve the elephant population for
our next generations.
泰 国 与 大 象 自 古 就 有 着 非 常 密 切 的 关 系 , 这 种 动
物 在 泰 国 历 史 文 化 中 扮 演 着 特 殊 的 角 色 , 它 们 在 也
获 得 了 人 们 高 度 的 尊 敬 。 在 过 去 , 泰 国 国 王 骑 着 它
们 与 缅 甸 战 斗 。 而 如 今 , 泰 国 皇 家 海 军 的 特 色 就 是
旗 帜 上 的 白 象 。 与 此 同 时 , 在 泰 国 最 受 欢 迎 的 啤 酒
也 叫 大 象 ( 泰 语 的 音 译 为 “chang”)。
为 了 表 彰 这 种 温 柔 而 富 于 力 量 的 动 物 ,3 月 13 日
被 选 定 为 “ 泰 国 大 象 日 ”。Chang Puak 杂 志
( 泰 语 寓 意 为 白 色 的 大 象 杂 志 ) 想 将 今 年 3 月 的 主 题
对 象 定 为 这 种 善 良 并 聪 明 可 爱 的 动 物 。 此 外 , 我 们
还 希 望 能 借 此 提 高 公 众 将 象 群 保 护 给 我 们 的 下 一 代
的 意 识 。
