Daniel Hannan (ECR). – Mr President, we now see what is meant by European economic governance, by fiscal
federalism. Whatever else we say about the leaders of the EU, no-one can fault their lack of ambition. We see here their
sheer hunger for power. Awesome. Inexorable. Rude and incontinent.
Not only are we talking about tax harmonisation, about a European debt union, about automatic fiscal transfers, but we are
also talking about the harmonisation of pensions. We are talking about the harmonisation of public sector salaries. We are
talking about the full machinery of single EU economic governance.
I am sure you can spot the logical flaw here. This is being done as a result of the failure of monetary union. European
monetary union has not worked, so let us have European economic and fiscal union. Closer integration has failed to
deliver, so let us have more integration. In the process, what we are doing is condemning the peoples of several of the
Member States to preventable poverty and preventable emigration, in order to sustain our own conceit.

Syed Kamall (ECR). – Mr President, it is quite clear that across the political spectrum we all want adequate, sustainable
and safe European pension systems. If we confined ourselves to the idea of making sure that a worker in one State can
move to another Member State and take their pension with them, that might be a valid idea to pursue.
We should, however, be careful about the different structures of pension systems in different Member States. Some are
more private-oriented and some are very much State-funded. As we move towards more harmonised European pension
systems, the concern I hear from my constituents is whether they will have to bail out underfunded or badly managed State
pension funds in other countries, just as we have had to bail out badly managed countries and their national debt.
We talk about sustainable pensions, yet at the same time we bring about policies in this place such as the Alternative
Investment Fund Managers Directive, which will reduce the returns on savings and investments for tomorrow’s
pensioners. We must make sure we have a consistent message.

Martin Kastler (PPE). – Herr Präsident! Ich habe dem Bericht der Kollegin Oomen-Ruijten zugestimmt und möchte zwei
Themen betonen. Wenn wir zum einen in Europa sehen, dass in einigen Ländern zu früh zu viel Rente gezahlt wird, diese
Länder aber in Schwierigkeiten kommen und die anderen Länder dafür geradestehen müssen, dann wird das ungerecht.
Diese Ungerechtigkeit kann natürlich nicht über die Gemeinschaft refinanziert werden. Hier bedarf es einer europäischen
Koordinierung.
Der zweite Punkt, der mir in diesem Bericht sehr gut gefällt, ist, dass das Subsidiaritätsprinzip klar besagt, dass die
Mitgliedstaaten für die Altersvorsorge selber zuständig sind. Das ist richtig.
Daher halte ich diesen Bericht für einen Schritt in die richtige Richtung, dass wir in Europa einerseits wahrnehmen, dass
unsere Bürgerinnen und Bürger im sozialen Bereich mehr Koordinierung in Europa wollen, weil sie sich ungerecht
behandelt fühlen, und dass wir andererseits klar machen, wo die Hauptverantwortung liegt, nämlich in den
Mitgliedstaaten.
Dieser Bericht geht in diese Richtung. Wir werden alles daran setzen, für das Weißbuch dies auch weiter durchzusetzen.

Anneli Jäätteenmäki (ALDE). – Arvoisa puhemies, äänestin tämän esityksen puolesta, mutta haluan muistuttaa, että
eläkepolitiikka, samoin kuin sosiaalipolitiikka, on kansallinen asia ja päätösvallan tulee myös säilyä siellä. Sen sijaan
eurooppalaista yhteistyötä tarvitaan siinä, että ihmiset, jotka ovat olleet muissa EU-maissa töissä ja palaavat sitten
mahdollisesti entiseen kotimaahansa, saisivat eläkkeensä niistä eri maista, missä he ovat olleet työssä. Tänä päivänä se on
vaikeaa ja siinä on puutteita. Tämä asia Euroopan unionin jäsenmaiden pitäisi korjata. Jos on vapaa työvoiman liikkuvuus,
myös eläkkeen pitää aina liikkua maasta toiseen.
