Sir
I have wisht for a pretence to trouble You with a Letter ever since I had the honour
of Your Conversation at Berlin. I am sorry the first I write shoud be to solicite a favour of
You. But as You are every where known to be the great promoter [as well] as Master of all
kinds of usefull Learning I have lately receiv’d a Letter from a friend of mine that is now 10
upon an Edition of Caesars Commentarys and desires me to make you acquainted with
his Design. He has heard that the King of Prussia has one of those Buffalos that Julius
Caesar calls an Urus and gives so particular a description of. He intends to spare no Cost
in the Edition of this Book which will probably be the noblest Volume that ever came
from the English press. He woud therefore be very glad to get a Drawing of this Beast if 15
possible, which he woud have engraven at Amsterdam, where they are now at work on
several other prints that are to have a place in the same Book. He intends to enrich his
Edition with Palladio’s Cutts of Caesars Battles, Machines and Encampments, with all
the ancient Medals[,] Statues and Bas reliefs that have any relation to his Authour, and
with prints of any modern pictures that have bin taken from the Commentaries and are 20

Leibniz jedenfalls auf die in Z. 15 geäußerte Bitte ein. Aus Leibniz’ Schreiben an H. Sloane vom 15. November
1704 (London British Library Sloane 4039 Bl. 390–391; Druck in Reihe III) geht seine Absicht
hervor, auch Addison zu schreiben. Das nächste überlieferte Stück des Briefwechsels ist Leibniz an Addison,
29. Juni 1706 (Hannover Niedersächs. Hauptstaatsarchiv Hann. 93, 492, 2 Bl. 316). 8 at Berlin:
im Winter 1702/03, vgl. N. 10. 10 friend: wohl der Verleger J. Tonson, der im Frühjahr 1703 wegen
der geplanten Caesar-Ausgabe in den Generalstaaten war und dort mit Addison zusammentraf sowie
deswegen korrespondierte; vgl. Addison, Letters, 1941, S. 39 f. Die Edition selbst wurde von S. Clarke
besorgt, der mit Addison nicht korrespondiert zu haben scheint. 11 Edition: Die Ausgabe erschien
