Par ailleurs,l’exploit de Solar Impulse, à l’honneur pour ce Salon et queje salue très sincèrement, nous ouvre des perspectivesimportantes sur une source d’énergie « inépuisable », le soleil.Mais la route pour y parvenir est longue. La généralisation à laflotte mondiale n’est pas encore pour demain. Il nous a doncfallu travailler très vite, ensemble, pour limiter d’ores et déjànos consommations de carburant.Car, contrairement à d’autres secteurs bénéficiant d’alternativesénergétiques (électricité, éolien, solaire…), l’aviationn’a d’autre choix pour l’instant que d’utiliser un carburantliquide à très fort contenu énergétique répondant à descontraintes d’utilisation très sévères.En France, les acteurs du transport aérien se sont réunis ausein du Conseil pour la recherche aéronautique civile (CORAC)pour mettre en cohérence leurs efforts en matière de rechercheet d’innovation. Il s’agit d’être en mesure de proposer dansun avenir très proche des technologies qui permettront auxavions de consommer deux fois moins de carburants.Mais pour aller plus loin et découpler à terme la croissancedu transport aérien de la consommation d’énergie fossile, ondoit de pouvoir compter sur des carburants alternatifs issus deressources renouvelables.Le défi technologique, industriel et environnemental estconsidérable. Après l’initiative américaine CAAFI, lancéeen 2006, la France, sous l’égide de la DGAC, a été l’un despremiers pays européens à se doter d’un réseau regroupantles acteurs privés ou institutionnels concernés par les futurscarburants aéronautiques : l’ini-FCA. Cette initiative constitueainsi un forum privilégié pour les échanges stratégiques,de réflexion et de programmation pour la recherchede carburéacteurs alternatifs.Le Bourget 2011 est une formidable occasion de susciter ourenforcer les échanges internationaux sur les travaux et leursperspectives. For instance, the Solar Impulsefeat achieved by Bertrand Piccard, to whom I would like togive a warm welcome as our special guest at this year’s Show,has opened up new prospects for an ‘inexhaustible’ sourceof energy, i.e. the sun. Yet the road ahead is still long. Itswidespread use by airline fleets around the world is not aboutto happen. We therefore have to work very fast, hand in hand,to limit our fuel consumption right now.Furthermore, the Solar Impulse featContrary to other sectors which are already benefiting fromalternative energies (electricity, wind, solar, etc.), the aviationindustry has no other choice for the time being but to use liquidfuels with very high energy contents meeting very stringentoperational requirements.Players in the French aviation transport sector met as partof the Civil Aviation Research Council (CORAC) to discusshow to be more consistent in their research and innovationefforts. The next step will be to recommend in the near futurea number of technologies that will help aircraft to burn twiceas less fuel.Yet, to go even further and dissociate aviation transport growthfrom the consumption of fossil fuels in the long term, we mustbe able to turn to alternative fuels derived from renewableresources.The technical, industrial and environmental stakes at handare substantial. Following the CAAFI initiative (USA) in 2006,France – led by the DGAC – is one of the first Europeancountries to have built a network bringing together privatecompanies and public institutions concerned by future aviationfuels: ini-FCA. This initiative has so far provided a forum forstrategic discussions, debate and programming of researchon alternative turbine fuels.The 2011 Bourget Show is a great occasion to inciteor reinforce international exchanges on works and their futureprospects.
