English-speaking readers in manyfields, including philosophy, anthropology, social theory, psychology, the history ofreligions, as well as literary and art criticism, will finally have access to, an essential workthat bas lamentably remained a mystery to thera for the past four decades. In Durand’sdiscussions of myth, symbol and image, these readers will find a theoretîcal sophisticationfar exceeding that of writers on these topics with whom they are more familiar, includingsuch dominant figures as Jung and Campbell. While philosophical investigation of theimaginary bas recently made some headway in Anglo-American thought, discussions havebeen seriously hindered by a lack of access to Durand’s grotindbreaking works in this area.Though not all readers will adopt unconditionally his « Pragmatic, relativist method ofconvergence, » no one who hopes to develop a profound grasp 0 the imaginary can affordto ignore the powerfal case that he makes for his approach.
