As the impressive six-archbridge on the road to San Marino, Carpegna and Urbino shows, during theMiddle Ages the village of Mercatino Conca belonged to the Malatesta family.The ancient castle was built in 1272 but was destroyed by Federico daMontefeltro in 1462 when his troops conquered it. Just outside Mercatino, onceacross the bridge and after about 2 km, the itinerary starts to climb gently firsttowards Ripalta and then through a wood with sheer gradients to the village ofMontealtavelio.Following signs for the “Osteria del Mirecul” restaurant, the itinerary takes astretch of asphalt road that after about 4 km of climbs and descents leads toPiandicastello church. From here, the itinerary heads downhill following signs forAuditore-Tavoleto and leaves the Conca Valley for the Ventena Valley in Torricellaat 15.4 km. After a dirt track stretch, at 18 km a medieval stone path leads uphillto the medieval villages of Castelnuovo and Piandicastello. This time, turn righttowards the cemetery then downhill to the Onferno Caves where there is an interestingnatural history museum housing beautiful bats, amongst other things.Leave the caves and head downhill before climbing again along an asphalt roadthat leads to Molino Renzini (31 km). Turn left before the bridge onto a dirt trackrunning along the Conca River and then at 32 km near a barn turn right. After 200metres, head back onto the outward route in the opposite direction. Once backat the bridge in Mercatino Conca, continue straight on Via Tretolo and 500 maway, opposite the sports ground, cross the wooden bridge and take the cyclepath. At the end of the cycle path turn left towards the village and after 100metres turn right, returning to the departure point (Piazza Rossini) after 35.8 km.Le tour part de la piazza Rossigni de Mercatino Conca. Situé dans une position decarrefour très importante, comme le témoigne un pont à six arches, ouvrage déterminantsur les routes pour St. Marin, Carpegna et Urbino, Mercatino appartenait àl’époque médiévale à la famille des Malatesta. L’ancien château, connu dès 1272,fut détruit par les troupes de Federico da Montefeltro qui réussit à s’en emparer en1462. Le parcours, qui sort de Mercatino par le pont, commence après environ 2km à monter avec des pentes non élevées qui conduisent tout d’abord à Ripaltapuis, traversant un bois, avec des pentes plus sévères, au hameau deMontealtavelio. Suivant les indications pour “ l’Osteria dei Mirecul “, parcourir laroute asphaltée qui, après quelques vallonnements et environ 4 km, aboutit devantl’église de Piandicastello. Descendant encore suivant les indications Auditore-Tavoleto, laisser la vallée du Conca pour gagner celle du Ventena, dans la localitéde Torricella, au km 15,4. Après une partie de route en terre, au km 18 prendre unsentier pierreux d’origine médiévale qui monte initialement vers le village médiévalde Castelnuovo puis à Piandicastelllo. Suivre alors la direction du cimetière prenantun virage vers la droite et commencer une descente conduisant aux grottes deOnferno, musée naturaliste très intéressant avec de très belles chauves-souris.Après les grottes, le parcours descend pour remonter ensuite vers une routeasphaltée conduisant à Molino Renzini (km 31). Tournant à gauche avant le pont,prendre une route en terre qui côtoie le fleuve Conca, et au km 32, à la hauteurd’une grange, tourner à droite pour reprendre, après 200 m, le parcours de l’allerà refaire dans le sens opposé. Une fois revenus sur le pont de Mercatino Conca,continuer tout droit par la via Tretolo et, 500 m après, en face du terrain sportif, traverserun pont en bois et s’engager dans la piste cyclable.
