Printemps 2007
Spring 2007
Le carnet de la directrice
En 2007, la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa
a tiré profit d’une occasion ex-
ceptionnelle, celle d’acquérir des
éléments de l’ancienne résidence
d’O.J. et Isobel Firestone à Rockliffe,
réunissant ainsi la Collection
Firestone d’art canadien à des carac-
téristiques architecturales de son
premier foyer.
o.j. firestone with his collection,
minto place, rockliffe.
Director’s Notebook
2007 brought an exceptional opportunity
for OAG: the chance to
acquire elements of Dr. O.J. and
Mrs.Isobel Firestone’s former Rock-
liffe residence, thus reuniting the
Firestone Collection of Canadian
Art with the architectural features
of its original home.
This undertaking engendered
enthusiasm and generosity from
everyone involved. Board mem-
bers threw themselves into the
task, professionals in related fields
unwaveringly volunteered time and expertise, and the present owner of the
house, Neil Malhotra, went out of his way to ensure our plans become a reality. We
are encouraged to believe that the project will be embraced as a his-
toric legacy for Ottawa, an appropriate addition to the Firestone’s original
gift to the City.
In the new Ottawa Art Gallery, the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art
will continue to serve as a focal point for the many interested members of the
Ottawa community, as well as visitors to the National Capital Region. The positive
momentum of this project will surely move us forward in the right direction.
We welcome your thoughts and suggestions.
Tract 08 7
The exhibition Rereading examines the process of reading and interpretation
intrinsic to every artistic creation. It brings together work by Angela Grauerholz,
Klaus Scherübel, and Raymonde April that is based in the reinterpretation of
previous works of art and literature. The complexity and scope of these works,
the temporality that they encompass, and the quantity of materials they revisit,
turn them into research cabinets open to the process of thought and creation.
Angela Grauerholz’s Reading Room for the Artist at Work is a partial reconstruction
of Alexandr Rodchenko’s Reading Room of the USSR Workers’ Club (1925).
In it, Grauerholz inserts a dozen artists’ books and a film montage in which she
privileges cross-disciplinary lines of interpretation and passages between the
fragmentary and disparate elements of modern culture. In lieu of propaganda,
Grauerholz emphasizes open-ended systems of thought and the inventiveness
of multiple readings anchored in dialogue and play.
Klaus Scherübel’s work, Mallarmé,The Book (Reading Room), explores and
materializes Mallarmé’s project of a utopian book that would encompass all books:
the sum of the relationship between all things. A work of conceptual art before
its time, Mallarmé’s proposition anchors this inaccessible book in a methodical
description of its materiality. This paradox, which Scherübel analyses through
a series of editorial and promotional works, permits one to comment and shed
light upon modernity’s characteristic quest for purity and essence, as well as the
inherent constraints of materiality.
With her work, Tout embrasser [All Encompassing], Raymonde April remakes
the trajectory of twenty-five years of her own photographic practice by revisiting
the more than 500 images, rejects, and doubles left in the margins of her
series. Reassembled in a mosaic, these images are presented next to their film
version, whose format evokes the slow unfolding of an album. April thus emphasizes
the plural dimensions of a reinterpretation of the places, landscapes, and
people that participate in her singular mode of expression.
universelle qu’ils cherchaient.
Tract 08 11
The exhibition Elemental Simplicity examines Quebec City’s art scene in the 1950s
and 1960s through a presentation of landscape paintings by Suzanne Bergeron
and Claude Picher. Along with similar young artists working in the city at that
time, Bergeron and Picher were creating art positioned somewhere between
the abstraction of the Automatistes in Montreal and the regionalism of early-
20th-century Quebec painters. Described as “Elemental Simplicity” in 1960, 1
their paintings used nature as a platform upon which to build an investigation
of design, colour and artistic materials. Although this work was described as
contrary to abstraction by both artists and critics, it paradoxically owed a great
debt to the movement.
While Picher admired the “unique Canadian-ness” of the Group of Seven,
even seeking out an equivalent art in the Maritimes as a representative of the
National Gallery of Canada, his own paintings of the Quebec landscape dealt
with much more universalist principles of land and place. By the 1960s, his
expressionist use of pure colour, which he applied in thick swabs, simplified the
land and sky into flat planes. Bergeron also used nature as a springboard from
which to explore notions of materiality. Seen as “linked, like all Canadians, to the
elemental forces,” 2 she described her paintings as imaginative, emotional expressions
of natural settings.Yet, her winter works, with their slashes of grey, white,
and blue paint, exhibit the influence of Abstract Expressionism. Bergeron, like
Picher, saw her work as more universal than regional. 3 Despite their aversion
to abstraction, both painters found that distilling regional subject matter into
abstract forms gave their work the universal relevance for which they strove.
Weiss: Flowers & Questions. A Retrospective
(Tate Modern); Christoph Büchel: Simply
Botiful, (Hauser & Wirth); et Through the
Looking Glass: Contemporary Korean Art (Asia
House); la plus pompeuse : In the darkest
hour there may be light, une sélection de la
collection « tue-moi » de Damien Hirst
(Serpentine Gallery). L’œuvre la plus rafraîchissante
: The Unilever Series: Carsten
Höller, une installation de cinq glissades
au Tate Modern; les pas trop impressionnantes
: Le Prix Turner 2006 (Tate Britain)
