12There is a clear need for further capacity building andknowledge sharing throughout AMARC network onlobbying and alerts, as well as an ameliorated coordinationfor advocacy at the International TelecommunicationsUnion (ITU), UNESCO and other internationalForum.Advocacy activities were conducted in 2008, particularlyin relationship to UNESCO for the 3rd MayInternational for the freedom of expression in Maputo,where the declaration explicitly recognised the role ofCommunity radio in Congo. AMARC has continuedwith an active participation in the Building CommunicationsOpportunities, BCO participating in the Londonevaluation meeting in March and at the Johannesburgmeeting in December. AMARC organised aknowledge sharing seminar in Kathmandu, Nepal inJuly to reflect on how to increase the social impact ofcommunity radio.MilestonesThe presentation of the Principles for a democratic legislationfor Community Media was a key milestonein 2008. This principles were endorsed by many organisationsin <strong>La</strong>tin America, and by the Inter AmericanCommission of Human Rights. They were alsodiscussed and widely distributed through the AMARCnetwork.AMARC renewed its world MoU with Food and AgriculturalOrganisation. It established a Global agreementwith IPS, besi<strong>des</strong> reinforcing itsrole as a recognisedINGO in ECOSOC.Radio ADA, Ghana (Photographie AMARC)community radio. AMARC made the presentation onthe seminar for follow-up on the lines of action of theWSIS. AMARC presence in relationship to ITU hasincreased. We have reinforced our relations with theECOSOC and maintained the relationship with Unitednations Council on the Status of Women.The Principles for a democratic legislation for CommunityMedia, proposed by the legislation programme ofAMARC LAC, was a step forward. It was recognisedby the Inter-American commission of human rights. Itwas widely distributed and there were debates at theInternational conference in Bogota and at a seminarheld in August in Accra in conjunction with OM7.AMARC has reinforced its links with Civil Society Organisationssuch as the World Social Forum InternationalCouncil. It organised with FAO and other stakeholdersa meeting on how to increase effectiveness ofThere is need for further knowledge exchange betweenCommunity Radio Stakeholders, between regions onhow to best confront advocacy issues combining localand global strategies to promote communicationrights.One key challenge for AMARC is to reinforce its effectivenessby being present in a larger number of internationaland regional Forums. It also needs to reinforcethe expertise of its members in key issues particularlywhen it comes to the challenges of the transition todigital radio, solidarity alerts, policy research and tofacilitate knowledge sharing through the network.In 2009 AMARC will concentrate in reinforcing themonitoring of community radio situation and communicationrights as well as reinforcing collaboration withcivil society and multilateral partners at the local andglobal levels.AMARC 2008 ANNUAL REPORT
