PassagesLettre de la Rédaction | Letter from the EditorÀ année exceptionnelle, une fin exceptionnelle ! Cette édition d’automne sera consacréeà la remarquable réussite des élèves de la promotion 2009, véritables pionniers de laFASNY (page 10). Il y a deux ans, la cérémonie d’ouverture de la classe de Premièrevenait marquer solennellement le début d’une longue odyssée de deux ans qui allaitles mener sur le chemin du baccalauréat et des plus grandes universités américaines etinternationales. Les élèves de la promotion 2009 ont tous obtenu une mention aucélèbre examen, preuve s’il en faut de leur persévérance et du talent des enseignants dela FASNY qui les ont guidés tout au long de ces années et, pour certains, depuis la PetiteSection de maternelle. Dans les mois et les années à venir, nous nous réjouissons desuivre l’évolution de ces jeunes diplômés, premiers véritables Anciens Élèves de laFASNY, au moment même où ils poursuivent leur voyage vers d’autres horizons.Egalement au programme de cette édition, l’épopée de trois de nos anciens élèvesinstallés à Londres (page 66). Ils sont parvenus à associer travail, études et agrément touten s’impliquant dans de grandes causes humanitaires. Amedeo d’Amore ’07, eststagiaire-bénévole pour l’association française à but non lucratif Action Contre La Faim quilutte contre la faim et sauve des millions de personnes dans le monde, enfants et adultesconfondus, touchés par les problèmes de malnutrition. Daphné Marciel ’93, est, quant àelle, un membre actif d’Amnesty International Royaume-Uni dans les quartiers deMayfair et de Soho. Elle est chargée du site Internet et des actions de groupe en faveur desdroits de l’homme en Chine. Enfin, Alexis Martinez ’97 est avocat à titre pro-bono pour leHaut Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les Réfugiés (UNHCR, ou HCR dans l’espacefrancophone). Il élabore des audits de situation pour le gouvernement et intervient, entant que conseiller, devant les tribunaux anglais lors d’audiences relatives à l’applicationdes lois internationales en matière de réfugiés. Ces trois anciens élèves incarnentvéritablement la mission de la FASNY et nous sommes fiers de les compter parmi nous.Notre rapport annuel, annexé dans cette édition (page 75), a été entièrement révisé. Ilcomprend désormais de nouvelles catégories de donateurs, mettant ainsi en avant laséniorité, l’engagement et l’inspiration de beaucoup. Vous noterez ainsi le Cercle desVisionnaires, les Nouveaux Donateurs, 110% Club, le Comité d’Allégeance et le Cercle desMembres du personnel. Nous comprenons que cette section puisse être fastidieuse,aussi avons-nous tenté d’y apporter une mise en page plus engageante. Commetoujours, cette section vise à saluer la générosité et le soutien sans faille de nosdonateurs. Et de cela, nous les remercions du fond du cœur.Ne manquez pas non plus nos articles consacrés aux nouveaux membres du personnelenseignant et administratif (page 72). Profils de profs mettra à l’honneur lesenseignants et fiers parents de jeunes diplômés de la promotion 2009 (page 20).Les traditionnelles sections FASNYPATter, Les Arts, FASNYFlash et Shark Bites couvrenttoute l’actualité sportive, artistique, associative et événementielle de ces derniers mois,non sans un relookage bien mérité.What a marvelous finish to an unprecedented year! Thisissue is dedicated to the students of the Class of 2009,who pioneered as FASNY’s first graduating class (page10). Two years ago, they “cut the ribbon” for the first 11thgrade and spent the next six arduous trimestersnavigating the path to the Baccalauréat and to collegesand universities here and abroad. Every senior passedthe Bac with honors, a testimony of their perseverance,but also of the talent of the teachers who guided them,some from as early as Nursery at FASNY. We look forwardto following our first full alumni class as they continuethe expedition in the coming months and years.We caught up with a few of our alumni in London (page 66), who, it turns out,combine work, study, and pleasure with serious involvement in community service.Amedeo d’Amore ’07 interns with the French organization Action Contre la Faim, anon-profit devoted to saving the lives of severely malnourished children and adults.Daphné Marciel ’93 is an active member of the Mayfair and Soho Group of AmnestyInternational UK, where she is in charge of the website and the group actions onhuman rights in China. Alexis Martinez ’97 is a member of his law firm’s pro-bonoteam, who help the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) draftposition papers for the government and intervene in English court proceedings toadvise on international refugee law issues. These three alumni truly embody theFASNY mission, and we are proud that they are among our ranks.Our Annual Report, which is included in this issue (page 75), has taken on renewedlife. We have established new categories honoring donors for their longevity,commitment, and inspiration to others by adding the Cercle des Visionnaires, NewDonors, 110% Club, Loyalty Society, and a special call-out to Faculty and Staff Giving.We know this section of FASNYPages can be tedious to read, so we have tried to addsome pop to the layout as well. As always, this annual mention of our appreciation isnot nearly enough thanks to our donors for their loyal support.You won’t want to miss the teacher features about our new faculty and staff (page 72)as well as the profiles of the teachers whose own children were graduated from FASNYlast June (page 20). The usual fare highlighting a very busy winter and spring can befound in FASNYPATter, Les Arts, FASNYFlash, and Shark Bites, but with a few updatesin the design of some of the mastheads.On our final approach to 2010 and our School’s 30th birthday, we remember those whomade this passage before us and who laid the groundwork for such a wonderful school. Lettre du Chef d’établissementLetter from the Head of SchoolA l’approche du trentièmeanniversaire de notreétablissement, nous nousprévalons des récents etprodigieux achèvementsauxquels nous sommes parvenus. Mischa Zabotin,Président du Conseil d’Administration, y fait référencedans un article annexe et cette édition du magazineFASNYPAGES y consacre une importance toute particulière.La réussite la plus remarquable est bien sûr celle de notre première classe de Terminale.Plutôt que de surenchérir sur la perfection de tels résultats, je souhaite souligner lamanière dont cette réussite a été rendue possible. Ces jeunes gens ouverts, bienélevés, talentueux et confiants ne sont pas tombés du ciel. La plupart d’entre eux ontété scolarisés à la FASNY pendant de nombreuses années, dont un tiers depuis plus detreize ans. Les enseignants de l’école maternelle, de l’école primaire et du collège, dontles vertus et l’engagement sans faille ont contribué à les forger, méritent notrereconnaissance au même titre que nos remarquables enseignants de lycée.Alors que nous savourons le succès de cette première promotion, interrogeons-noussur la nature même du processus éducatif. Rome ne s’est pas construite en un jour,non plus que l’apprentissage de la lecture n’est instantané. Comme on le dit souvent,et à juste titre, le véritable bilinguisme, tout comme un bon ragoût, nécessite d’êtrelonguement mijoté ! Un principe fondé sur des années de pratique, d’essais etd’erreurs, et de leçons patiemment apprises.Ce faisant, nous tentons de modérer notre fierté toute légitime et de bien faire faceaux difficultés qui se profilent. Certaines, de nature financière ou immobilière, sontune réalité matérielle. D’autres dépendent de nous. Comme toute organisation, uneécole doit constamment s’auto-évaluer. Nous n’entendons pas nous reposer sur noslauriers. Dans chacune des quatre divisions de la FASNY, l’ensemble des enseignantset du personnel administratif va s’attacher : à coordonner les programmes, àdévelopper des outils de préparation et d’évaluation du cursus scolaire, à optimiser lacommunication entre les enseignants francophones et anglophones, à approfondirnotre compréhension du bilinguisme, à adapter notre approche pédagogique enfonction des besoins, des forces et des lacunes de nos élèves, et enfin, à continuerd’introduire les innovations technologiques dans notre enseignement. Cette liste peutparaître exigeante mais est pourtant loin d’être exhaustive. Notre travail n’est jamaisvéritablement achevé et nous pouvons encore, sans cesse et toujours progresser.As it begins the final year of its third decade, our Schoolcan take justifiable pride in its recent stunning successes.Board Chair Mischa Zabotin mentions some of them inhis adjoining letter, and the pages of this FASNYPagesissue recount them in impressive detail.The most obvious of these feats relate to the accomplishments of our first seniorclass. Rather than gild the lily in these few lines, I take this opportunity to underscorethe process that made these accomplishments possible. The self-confident, talented,well-mannered, outgoing young women and men who stepped forth on June 14 toreceive their FASNY high school diplomas didn’t fall from the sky. Most of them hadbeen enrolled here over a considerable period of time, more than a third of them forat least 13 years. The teachers whose skill and commitment nurtured and trainedthem in the Nursery, Lower, and Middle Divisions therefore deserve as much creditfor our seniors’ triumphs as do our outstanding high school faculty.As we savor the successes of our first graduates, we would do well to reflect on thenature of education as process. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Children don’t learn to readovernight. As we often say, true bilingualism is more aptly comparable to a stew thanto fast food. And true wisdom comes from a lifetime of trial, error, and lessons learned.In this spirit, we temper our justifiable pride by contemplating the demands that lieahead. Some of them, like finances and real estate, are objective. Others depend onus. Like any organization, a good school must be a center of permanent selfevaluation.We will not sit on our laurels. Throughout its four divisions, FASNY’steachers, administrators, and staff will strive to harmonize our programs; to producethe best possible tools for curriculum planning and evaluation; to improve teamworkbetween francophone and anglophone faculty; to deepen our understanding ofbilingualism; to adapt our pedagogical approach to the needs, strengths, andweaknesses of all our students; to provide guidance and counseling, and to continueintegrating technology into the curriculum. This challenging list is hardly exhaustive;our work is never done; and we can always—always—improve.This is the spirit that built our School and that should continue to inspire all of us asFASNY prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Une croissance rendue possible grâce à l’implication del’ensemble des élèves, des enseignants, du personnel, des bénévoles, des donateurset des parents d’élèves qui se sont succédés durant près d’une génération et demie.Au moment de cette étape charnière, je suis foncièrement convaincu que la FASNYs’est imposée comme la seule véritable école Franco-Américaine, bilingue,biculturelle de la région, associant la rigueur des curriculums français et américainavec un accompagnement pédagogique bienveillant et attentionné, centré sur lesbesoins des enfants. La FASNY est un lieu singulier qui prépare des citoyens dumonde, ouverts d’esprit et généreux de cœur.La FASNY est un lieu singulier qui prépare des citoyens du monde,ouverts d’esprit et généreux de cœur. | This is a special place, whichprepares citizens of the world with open hearts and open minds.Nous entamons donc cette nouvelle année, confiants que nous offrirons à nos élèvesune éducation tant excellente que complète. Trente ans plus tard, nous sommes enmesure de proposer un cursus secondaire complet et pouvons être fiers de nos jeuneslauréats. La promotion 2009 aura donc brillé par l’excellence des ses résultats auBaccalauréat en affichant un taux de réussite, avec mention, de 100%. Nos jeunesbacheliers se singularisent également par la qualité des universités qu’ils ont choiside rejoindre à la rentrée. Leur succès vient couronner des années d’efforts intensifs etun remarquable esprit de groupe. Il rend également hommage au dévouement et ausoutien sans relâche de leurs parents. Je voudrais également désigner et remercierFrank Brochin pour avoir su propulsé la FASNY à cette place stratégique et convoitée.Notre défi aujourd’hui consiste à s’assurer que la FASNY reste définitivement ancréedans le paysage éducatif du Sud Westchester. Pour se faire, nous devons nonseulement surmonter la crise économique actuelle mais également continuer desoutenir la FASNY de toutes les manières possibles : maintenir la solidité financière del’Ecole ; renforcer la dotation actuelle de manière à couvrir les coûts d’enseignementet d’infrastructures ; continuer à moderniser nos bâtiments. Les donations au profitdu Fonds Annuel constituent une forme essentielle de soutien tout comme lebénévolat pour FASNYPAT, ou la promotion de l’image de la FASNY autour de nous.Il y a un peu plus de 30 ans, alors que j’étais élève au Lycée Français de New York, j’aieu le privilège d’avoir Katrine Watkins, co-fondatrice de la FASNY, comme professeurd’anglais. En 1980, aux côtés de Sylvette Nicolini, elle fonda la FASNY qui ne comptaità l’époque que 17 élèves de maternelle. Aujourd’hui, nous recensons près de 800élèves répartis sur trois campus, et la FASNY s’impose comme l’une des meilleuresécoles privées de la région. En étroite collaboration avec Bob Leonhardt et l’ensembledes membres du C.A., je me réjouis de contribuer à élargir la vision de ces deuxfondatrices en donnant un nouvel élan à la FASNY. This year FASNY celebrates its30th birthday. It has taken ageneration and a half of commitment by successiveclasses of students, teachers, administrators, volunteers,donors, and parents to nurture FASNY to full adulthood.I am convinced that as it marks this milestone, FASNY has become the only trulyFrench-American, bilingual, multicultural school in the area, combining the rigors ofthe full French and American curricula with a caring, child-centered pedagogicalapproach. This is a special place, which prepares citizens of the world with openhearts and open minds.We begin this year secure in the knowledgethat we deliver an excellent and completeeducational experience to our students. Itmay have taken 30 years, but we now providea full high school curriculum and can be veryproud of our inaugural class of graduates. Themembers of the Class of 2009 distinguishedthemselves with their excellent Baccalauréat results, as all of them obtained mentions(honors). They also stand out by the quality of the colleges they are attending this fall.Their success is a tribute not only to their hard work and their great class spirit, but alsoto the hard work and spirit of our faculty and administration, as well as to the constantdedication and support of parents. I’d also like to take this opportunity to single outFrank Brochin for his leadership in helping us get to this enviable position.Our collective challenge now is to ensure that FASNY remain permanently etched inthe educational landscape of lower Westchester. In order to secure a lasting future forFASNY, we must not only overcome today’s challenging economic environment, butalso continue to support our School in every way we can. We want to ensure theSchool’s solid financial footing; we need to build our endowment to a level at whichit can sustain our programs and infrastructure; we will seek to continue to improveour facilities. Of course, giving to the Annual Fund is a critical element of support forthe school but so are volunteering with FASNYPAT and encouraging friends to entrusttheir children to us.A bit more than 30 years ago, I was very lucky to have one of the founders of FASNY,Katrine Watkins, as my English teacher while I was a student at the Lycée Français deNew York. Alongside Sylvette Nicolini, she went on to found FASNY in 1980 with 17students in one classroom. Today we teach about 800 students on three campuses,and FASNY represents one of the largest and most successful private schools in ourarea. Agnès Champigny et Pascale Mihailescu : enseignantes et amies de longuedate | Lifelong Teachers, Lifelong Graduates, Lifelong FriendsDès les premiers instants de cette cérémonie de remisedes diplômes, les vingt-trois élèves de la FASNY ont àtout jamais marqué l’histoire de l’école. Neuf d’entre euxy ont été scolarisés depuis leur plus jeune âge, et deuxsont les enfants de deux enseignantes de longue date :Claire Champigny ’09 et Alexandre Mihailescu ’09 separtagent cette distinction.« Au départ, nous ne devions rester qu’une année auxEtats-Unis, précise Agnès Champigny, institutrice deCM1. Vingt-et-un ans plus tard, nous sommes toujours là! » Agnès Champigny et Pascale Mihailescu ont assisté,en première ligne et côte à côte, à la remise des diplômesde leurs enfants. « Ce fut particulièrement émouvant,précise Agnès. Cette année restera singulière carnombreux sont ceux qui ont été scolarisés à la FASNYdepuis toujours, et pour nous, cela constitue une mine desouvenirs, souligne Pascale avec émotion. Certes, ils étaientenfants de profs, mais par-dessus tout, ils étaient desélèves de l’école comme les autres. »Alors que les liens se resserraient entre les deux familles,une connexion s’établissait entre l’individu et l’institution.« J’adore l’école et j’en suis énormément fière », s’exclameAgnès sur un ton assuré. C’est ce même amour qui apermis de développer une école à part entière, de laPetite Section à la Terminale. « Je me souviens entendre leConseil d’Administration se dire prêt à ouvrir une classe dePremière, puis de Terminale, si suffisamment de parents serévélaient intéressés, se souvient Pascale. Après ces propos,ce fut véritablement un mouvement populaire parmi lesparents de l’école. »« Nous avons cru en l’école et en M. Leonhardt (Chefd’établissement de la FASNY), admet Agnès. J’ai su que laFASNY ferait tout pour y parvenir ; j’étais confiante ». « Onpouvait effectivement le ressentir, ajoute Pascale. Bob a toutfait pour que le lycée réussisse. Dès le départ…Il acommencé par recruter Paul Martin, Conseiller d’Orientation,et tous les deux ont commencé à visiter les universités, à fairedes recherches et à parler de la FASNY un peu partout. »Avec la pleine expansion de la FASNY, Pascale et Agnèss’accrochent au doux souvenir de leurs enfants et ducampus de Larchmont qui, pendant longtemps, fut leseul qu’elles connurent. « La FASNY n’est plus celle que j’aiconnue à mes débuts. En dépit de cette croissanceimpressionnante, je me réjouis qu’elle soit devenue uneécole de cette envergure, ajoute Pascale. Je regrettel’époque où nous étions tous sur un seul et même campusmais, quoi qu’il en soit, je suis toujours aussi ravie de merendre au travail chaque matin. »En cette belle matinée du 14 juin, l’exaltation et lafierté étaient palpables. Une école qui a fait naîtrechez ces deux enseignantes et ces deux mères de familleune multitude de souvenirs multiculturels. « C’est une écoleunique depuis le jour où elle a ouvert ses portes. Il y avait unetelle diversité parmi les enseignants et les élèves, ajoute-telle.Même si notre façon de penser est très franchouillarde,nos élèves et nos enfants se sentent américains, mais ils sontfrançais dans leur univers familial. » Twenty-three students marked the FASNY history bookslast summer as they marched in the School’s inauguralcommencement procession. Among the 23 were ninelifelong FASNY students, two of whom are children oflong-time faculty members. Claire Champigny ’09 andAlexandre Mihailescu ’09 share this distinction.“We initially came here for one year,” said AgnèsChampigny, Grade 4 teacher, of her family’s move to theU.S. “But we ended up staying for 21!” Agnès, along withfellow FASNY Kindergarten teacher Pascale Mihailescu,celebrated on the front lines as they watched theirchildren receive diplomas. “It was very emotional,” Agnèsdisclosed. “This year was very special because many ofthe kids who were graduated were lifers, and, for us, that’sa lot of memories,” Pascale said warmly. “I rememberevery one of them who came through the Pre-School.”Through working together and concurrent pregnancies—Claire and Alexandre, plus Charlotte Champigny ’12and Clément Mihailescu ’12—these FASNY motherswere able to create a lasting relationship between theirfamilies. “Working at FASNY, right away, it was like beingpart of a family,” observed Pascale. “It’s true,” Agnèsinterjected. “You and I, we’re like sisters, and our childrenare like brothers and sisters.”The two clans spent a lot of time together as Pascale andAgnès would cover for each other on parent-teachernights, meetings, and extracurricular activities. “Myclass was the meeting place for all the kids after school,”revealed Pascale. “They knew the School like it was theirhome. They weren’t only students at the School, theywere teachers’ kids; they were students of the School.”As both teachers and their families bonded, theconnection was forming between parent and institution.“I love the School, and I’m very proud of it,” Agnès saidunabashedly. It was that love that spawned what wenow know as our full-fledged high school. “I rememberthe Board of Trustees saying they would certainlyconsider opening an 11th and 12th grade, if there werea minimum number of parents interested,” Pascalerecalled. “So, it was really a grassroots movement fromthe parents after that point.”“We trusted the School and Mr. Leonhardt [Head ofSchool],” Agnès admitted. “I knew they were going todo everything they could to succeed; I was reallyconfident.” “You could feel it,” chimed in Pascale. “[Bob]did everything possible to make this high school work.You could tell from the beginning; he hired the collegecounselor, Paul Martin,and they both went tovisit colleges, doingresearch and getting theword out about FASNY.”Even as FASNY grew, bothPascale and Agnès heldonto fond memories ofthe one-building school atLarchmont, interlaced with images of their ownchildren. “For me, it’s like another school now. It’s toughthat it’s so big, but I’m glad that it grew into such a greatschool,” said Pascale. “I do miss that time when everyonewas on the Larchmont campus, but, regardless, I’malways happy in the morning when I go to work.”On the morning of June 14, that happiness wassurpassed with elation and pride as not only had theirchildren accomplished a major milestone, but theSchool that helped them get there was taking a stepalong with them. “I have loved it from the beginning,”Agnès said. “The School gave us a link between Americaand our home country,” added Pascale. That link wasable to provide both teachers—both mothers—withlifetimes of multicultural memories. “Back when theSchool started, it was already special: there was suchdiversity in the faculty and students,” she explained.“Even though we might have been very French in ourthinking, the students and our children, well—ils sesentent américains, mais ils sont français dans leurunivers familial.” www.FASNY.org | 21

Les activités de l’Association des parents d’élèves de la FASNY ■ FASNY Parent and Teacher Association EventsOù va l’argent ? | Where Does the Money Go? par | by Julie FaureDévelopper et maintenir une organisation comme la FASNY nécessite bien des talents etbien de l’énergie. Les besoins pédagogiques, financiers, culturels et sociaux de notreécole sont complexes et d’une grande importance pour nos élèves et leurs familles. Letravail du Conseil d’Administration, des différents services administratifs et de l’ensembledu personnel de la FASNY, est régulièrement félicité mais, en coulisse, d’autres acteursindispensables contribuent au bon fonctionnement et au développement de notreécole. Bien des accomplissements sont rendus possible grâce à l’énergie, aux ressourceset à l’enthousiasme des représentants et des délégués de FASNYPAT, et à l’ensemble desbénévoles qui chaque année dédient du temps et apportent idées et bonne humeur à denombreux projets : la foire aux livres, la kermesse, le festival de lecture ou la vented’articles dérivés FASNY pour ne citer que ceux-ci. Ces dernières années, leur mobilisationa permis de lever des fonds importants. Reversés en intégralité au profit de projetséducatifs, ils permettent d’améliorer sensiblement la vie scolaire de nos élèves et, parextension, des parents et du personnel de la FASNY. Rien que cette année, la liste desprojets financés par FASNYPAT est impressionnante.A l’école secondaire, une partie des fonds a permis de financer l’abonnement àTurniton.com, un outil de recherche éducatif en ligne qui promeut l’intégrité descitations sur Internet et enseigne aux élèves à éviter le plagiat. Les fonds ont égalementpermis l’acquisition d’un système stéréo portable de haute qualité pour les spectacles,les concerts et les assemblées. Enfin, grâce à la générosité de l’association, le bureau duConseiller d’orientation a bénéficié d’un ensemble de supports de sensibilisation surles différences d’apprentissage, comprenant des travaux et des DVD pédagogiquesélaborés par Mel Levine et Richard Lavoie.A l’école primaire, la publication du magazine Spirit, première revue littéraire associant lestravaux d’élèves de la Petite Section de maternelle au CM2, a été financée par FASNYPAT.Lancé cette année par le département d’anglais, notre but est de développer une versionbilingue en 2009–10. Les bibliothèques des campus de Larchmont et de Scarsdale ontété également enrichies de livres et de DVD en français. La bibliothèque de Larchmont abénéficié de travaux de rénovation et un des murs de la salle a été entièrement consacréaux travaux des élèves - une mosaïque réalisée par Gayle Sporn. La bibliothèque estdésormais ouverte aux élèves avant le début des cours, ainsi que pendant certainesheures de récréation et de la pause-déjeuner. Une fois par semaine, les familles peuventemprunter des livres et des DVD après la classe. Un autre projet réalisé cette année est lacréation d’une bibliothèque littéraire diversifiée au profit du programme de lecture del’école primaire. Entièrement développé par FASNYPAT, ce projet a été conjointementfinancé par l’association et par l’école. A l’occasion de la journée de reconnaissance desenseignants, ces derniers ont tous reçu une tasse personnalisée. Une action également àbut écologique, qui vise à réduire la production de déchets et le gaspillage. Enfin, desvestes de sécurité ont été achetées pour les enfants lors des sorties scolaires.Enfin, comme chaque année à la rentrée, les sacs-à-dos FASNY ont été offerts auxélèves de maternelle. L’association a également contribué au financement des photosde la cérémonie de remise des diplômes des élèves de Grande Section.Une fois encore, un grand merci à tous les parents, qui investissent tant dans notreécole. Vos efforts ont un impact significatif sur la vie de nos élèves et nous vous ensommes tous extrêmement reconnaissants. It takes all kinds of talent and energy to maintain and develop all the aspects of anorganization like FASNY—the pedagogical, financial, cultural, and community needsof a school such as ours are complicated and of great importance to our children andtheir families. The work of the Board, the various departments of the administration,and the teachers and staff are often recognized, but there are many people behind thescenes who also contribute to the smooth running of the School and the furtherdevelopment of its potential. Many thanks are due to the energy, resourcefulness, andenthusiasm of FASNYPAT reps and delegates, and to an army of volunteers who havegiven hours of time, ideas, and good humor to the Book Fair, Kermesse, Barnes & Noblereading festivals, the sale of FASNY wear, and a variety of other activities. Over the lastfew years, their efforts have raised a significant amount of funds, which they havedirected to a number of projects that have improved school life for our students, staff,and parents. The list of projects funded by FASNYPAT this year alone is impressive.FASNYPAT’s help has been felt in the following ways: In the Upper School, asubscription to Turniton.com, an educational web-based research tool for students,which develops integrity in internet citation and teaches them how to avoidplagiarism, was purchased for the campus. In addition, a high-quality, mobile soundsystem was bought for shows, concerts, and assemblies. The Upper School CounselingDepartment also benefited from FASNYPAT’s generosity, and was able to purchase thematerials for staff development on learning differences, including works and DVDs byMel Levine and Richard Lavoie.In the Lower School, the publication of the first-ever Lower School literary magazine,Spirit, including entries by every student from Nursery through fifth grade, was fundedby FASNYPAT. Launched by the English Department this year, the goal is to make thepublication a bilingual project in 2009–10. The Lower School libraries in both Larchmontand Scarsdale also benefited from funds for French materials and DVDs, and for a generalmake-over for the Larchmont library, including a mural of student work created by GayleSporn for one of the walls. The Larchmont library is now open to the children beforeschool and at some recesses and lunchtimes, and families can borrow books and DVDsafter school once a week as well. Les élèves de CP au CM2 furent,quant à eux, conviés à une chasse au trésor pour lemoins animée dans les allées de la librairie.Les professeurs, également présents, ont pu aider lesenfants à sélectionner leurs lectures estivales. Last May’s second annual Summer Reading Festival,sponsored by FASNYPAT, proved yet again that goodbooks and FASNY are always a great match. Held at theBarnes & Noble store in White Plains, the festival hadshelves and shelves of the best summer reads forstudents in all grades. Special events included a specialFASNY lunch, music, stories for Nursery throughKindergarten students, and a scavenger hunt for Grades1 through 5—which had almost the whole LowerSchool zipping from aisle to aisle. Sur lecampus de Larchmont, les familles de la FASNY furentrejointes au fil de la journée par la population localevenue profiter de cette agréable journée ensoleillée.Après quelques cupcakes et tours de poneys bienmérités, les enfants s’essayèrent à danser sur lascène, pratiquèrent leur put et se laissèrent aller auxjoies du château gonflable. La visite du camion depompier, organisée par la caserne de Larchmont, auracertainement contribué au succès de cette journée. Autotal, FASNYPAT est parvenu à lever 8 068 dollars, unesomme époustouflante compte tenu des températuresétouffantes. June 6 brought FASNY spirit to the Larchmont campusas it was time yet again for FASNY’s annual spring fair,Kermesse. FASNY families were joined by local familiesas the day unfolded. Between cupcakes and pony rides,children were able to dance onstage, practice theirputting, and let loose on an inflatable jungle gym, notto mention explore the ins and outs of a fire truck,courtesy of the Larchmont Fire Department. C’est à l’occasion du concertd’hiver de l’Ecole secondaire 2008 que Mme RochelleRoca-Hachem, parent d’élève à la FASNY, a découvert letalent des élèves de 6 ème . The event, titled “Break theSilence, Beat the Drum,” featured percussionists fromBrazil, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and the Caribbean, aswell as a group of our own sixth graders. FASNY parentRochelle Roca-Hachem saw the Grade 6 troupe performduring the Upper School Winter Concert in 2008.Ms. Roca-Hachem, who works at the U.N., recommendedthat FASNY students be a part of the ceremony.“The drum ceremony began and none of the drumssounded the same,” said Clémence Wassen ’15. Thecostumes of African drummers were great. Tall TalesNative American storyteller Dovi paid a visit to Grade 1students in February. Peinado. Ninth Graders Ace the BrevetThe Brevet des collèges is a French diploma given tostudents at the end of Grade 9. The test, which iscompletely in French, includes sections on French,mathematics, history, geography, and civics. “FASNYstudents always do well,” said Joël Peinado, head of theUpper School, “and last year was no exception.” AllGrade 9 students received Honors.The Brevet provides the opportunity to review a wholeyear’s curriculum, helping the students prepare forthe Bac, which they will take in Grades 11 and 12. Thefact that the ninth graders did so well is a testament totheir mastery of the curriculum and reconfirms howexemplary the teachers are at educating them. “Theseresults were especially impressive considering many ofthe students were not originally French speakers, buthave learned the language here at FASNY,” continuedMr. Peinado.

Etes-vous prêts ? » Ce sont les deuxquestions qui furent posées par Merrill Gisondo,professeur d’Arts plastiques, à ses élèves du secondairependant le cours de céramique. L’enthousiasme généralfut évident et les élèves ont spontanément commencé àpréparer le Salon du mois de mai. Chaque portrait,photographie, sculpture et autres mélanges de matièresportait l’énergie des élèves.Toutes les œuvres furent ensuite entreposées dans lefoyer des élèves de Terminale. Danse Moderne à Mamaroneck |Modern Dance in MamaroneckEn mai dernier, la compagnie de danse Pascal Rioult setrouvait sur le campus de Mamaroneck pour y présenterune partie de leur dernier spectacle, Views of the FleetingWorld. Quelques élèves ont eu l’opportunité d’apprendrequelques pas de danse et d’évoluer parmi les danseurs.Après le spectacle, les danseurs et Pascal Rioult,fondateur de la compagnie et chorégraphe, ont réponduaux questions des élèves. Ils ont également partagé leursexpériences de la danse et leurs sources d’inspiration. Sila troupe s’épanouit dans la danse moderne américaine,l’objectif de Pascal Rioult était ce jour là de sensibiliserl’esprit et le cœur de la communauté FASNY. The Pascal Rioult Dance Company visited theMamaroneck campus last May to perform its new piece,Views of the Fleeting World. During the assembly, severalstudents had the opportunity to learn parts of thechoreography from the dancers and to dance along withthe troupe. After the performance, the dancers andPascal Rioult, the company’s founder and Views of theFleeting World choreographer, answered questions anddiscussed their experiences and inspiration. Parmi lesmoments forts du spectacle, les performances desélèves de 5 ème qui avaient pour l’occasion écrit etcomposé paroles et mélodies. Tamra Stephenson,coordinatrice du spectacle, les a initiés à la compositionafin de développer leur appréciation des différentsgenres, formes et éléments essentiels du langagemusical. Ce projet particulier a également intégréd’autres aspects du curriculum scolaire. Les élèves ontdonc appris que tout auteur-compositeur doit d’abordidentifier une idée ou un thème directeur. Un conceptqui venait parfaitement souligner le programmed’anglais cette année. « Je les ai également encouragés àfaire appel aux métaphores et à leur imagination » asouligné Mlle Stephenson. MusicCoordinator Tamra Stephenson introduced songwritingto further the students’ appreciation of different styles,form, and essential elements of music. Dans l’auditorium de Chatworth Avenue,et devant un public venu nombreux, les élèves nous ontoffert une adaptation du célèbre roman de Roald Dahl,Charlie et la Chocolaterie, sous la direction artistiqued’Eileen Nober. This year’s Lower School Musical, Willy Wonka Jr., wasan incredible feat. Not only was there a kaleidoscope ofinnovative mise en scène, but the students also trulypresented themselves as young actors. Opération Hoops for Heart à l’Ecole primaire | Lower School Hoops for HeartEn février dernier, les élèves de CE2, CM1 et CM2 ontparticipé à l’opération Hoops for Heart. Parents, élèves etprofesseurs se sont donc affrontés, pour une bonnecause, lors d’une série de matchs de basket amicaux.« Nous avons décidé de suivre l’exemple de l’Ecolesecondaire », précise Dennis Hurlie, professeurd’Education Physique à Larchmont. L’Ecole secondaireorganise des collectes de fonds dans le cadre de Hoopsfor Heart depuis 2000. L’Ecole primaire a participé à cetévénement pour la 6ème année consécutive. Tous lesfonds récoltés lors de cette journée sont intégralementreversés à l’American Heart Association, à la mémoire deStanley Dressler, un enseignant de la FASNY, qui asuccombé à une crise cardiaque à l’âge de 56 ans. The Upper School has been participatingin this fund raiser, Hoops for Heart, since 2000, and thismarks the sixth consecutive year the Lower School hasparticipated. L’équipe de basket féminine : de la confiance à la victoireVictory from Trust: Girls Basketball« J’adore le basket et ce fut un honneur de partager mon expérience et maconnaissance du jeu avec les filles cette année, raconte Damian Johnson,surveillant et entraîneur à la FASNY. Avant tout, nous avons appris à nousfaire confiance. Ce fut le cas pour les joueuses mais également pour JulieGrady et moi-même en tant que co-entraîneurs.»Au fil de la saison, la confiance mena rapidement à la victoire. « Les fillesont fait preuve de beaucoup de ferveur, précise M. Johnson. Au début dela saison, elles ne savaient pas trop à quoi s’en tenir, mais après troisvictoires consécutives, la confiance et la persévérance de nos joueuses sefirent ressentir pendant et après les cours. »« Ce fut une saison passionnante, témoigne Julie Grady, entraîneur del’équipe. Les filles ont bien joué et sont même parvenues à vaincre deséquipes difficiles comme la Greenwich Country School. »Mais le plus dur reste à venir. Après avoir été sollicités par l’équipe pourassurer l’entraînement de pré-saison, M. Nous devons donc faire mieux et, pour ce faire, nousallons devoir démultiplier nos efforts. » “I love the game of basketball, and it was an honor sharing myexperience and knowledge of the game with girls this year,” said DamianJohnson, coach and FASNY student monitor. “Our biggest achievementas a team was learning to trust each other and, as coaches, CatherineFriel, Julie Grady, and I have worked hard to accomplish that.”As the season continued, trust soon led to victory. “The girls have showna tremendous amount of heart,” Mr. Johnson elaborated. “They came inat the start of the season not knowing how or where they would standrecord-wise, but after going undefeated for three games, the confidenceand dedication of our players began to show during school and after.”“It was truly an exciting season,” admitted Coach Julie Grady. “No matterwhat, the girls always played well. They were even able to come togetherand defeat tough schools like Greenwich Country Day.”But the real hard work starts this fall. After being approached by theteam to formulate pre-season training, Mr. Johnson and Ms. Grady willbe working with the girls to supercede expectations. “This year will bethe most challenging,” he said. “We won some games by a landslide,others were very close. Quelquessemaines après le début de la saison, c’est également contre cette écoleque la FASNY a disputé son premier match à domicile. Pas de victoire àla clé pour la FASNY lors de cette rencontre, mais les joueuses n’enétaient pas moins enchantées. « Quel bonheur de voir tous les supporteursvenus nous encourager », souligne Amanda Zihenni ’13. Coach Taylor acomplimenté les filles pour « leur talent et leur volonté » à pousser lesoftball au niveau supérieur. Excellente saison, les filles ! Last spring, FASNY Softball opened the season with a win againstResurrection School. “It was a tight game, but we won it in the end,”explained Oriana Durand ’13, who has been on the team for three years.A few weeks into the season, FASNY hosted its first home game, alsoagainst Resurrection. The final score was not a win, but the players werenevertheless ecstatic. “It was really fun to have so many fans herecheering for us,” said Amanda Zihenni, ’13. Selon JulienLaveyssieres, entraîneur de l’équipe, leurs efforts ont été clairementrécompensés : davantage d’essais marqués et autant de victoiressupplémentaires. Le dernier match de la saison fut, de tous, le plusexaltant. « Ce fut le dernier match pour bon nombre de Terminales et ils sesont battus corps et âme. Chacun d’entre eux s’est donné à 200 % »,précise-t-il. Avec une telle progression régulière de leur niveau de jeu,leurs adversaires n’ont qu’à bien se tenir. « Ce fut gratifiant de voir leurniveau de jeu s’améliorer au fil de la saison. L’an prochain, la FASNYs’annonce être un adversaire de taille. » The spring season for FASNY Rugby proved to be a great success, withthe team making huge strides. Their efforts certainly paid off; accordingto Coach Julien Laveyssieres, more goals were scored in the 2009 season,which led to more winning games. The last game the team playedtogether was the most exciting, Coach Laveyssieres explained. “It wasthe last game for a bunch of students in Grade 12, and everyone playedtheir guts out. Each kid gave 200 percent.” With a steady rise in the levelof play, he said that competitors should be on the lookout: “It was greatto watch the team improve throughout the season. Next year, FASNYshould be a serious contender.” Au printemps dernier, l’équipe de Cross-country de la FASNYcomptait quelques très bons athlètes. « Nous avions un groupe mixted’élèves de 6 ème . Ce panachage decoureurs a rendu la saison vraiment plaisante, et différente desprécédentes. Ils se sont parfaitement accordés et se sont toujoursbattus, à l’entraînement comme en compétition. La course la plusmémorable fut celle contre Sherwood Island. Les élèves ont couru endépit de vents très violents et d’une pluie torrentielle. » Sur les seizeélèves, trois des nos coureurs figurent parmi les meilleurs sportifs del’Association sportive du Fairchester (Fairchester Athletic Association).Emma Guyot ’15 est arrivée troisième parmi les élèves de 6 ème de laligue. Thomas Dupaquier ’14 est arrivé second du classementgénéral des 5 èmes . Enfin, Madeline Laffitte ’12 est arrivée en deuxièmeposition à son niveau. FASNY had some exceptional athletes on the cross country team lastspring. “We had a co-ed group of sixth graders, who were first-timerunners, running alongside older students who had been on theteam for a few years,” said Coach Eliza Huleatt. “The mix of old andnew runners made for a really fun and different kind of team. It wasgreat to see how they pulled together and always tried their bestwhen competing, especially at races. The most outstanding race wasat Sherwood Island, where the students braved hurricane-like windand rain.” Of the 16 students on the team, three were at the top ofthe Fairchester Athletic Association. Tennis : jeu, set et match | 40-Love, FASNY—TennisLes équipes de Tennis ont toujours fait preuve d’une force à toute épreuveet cette saison n’aura pas été différente des précédentes, selon MissyMcAndrews, entraîneur de tennis à la FASNY. « Cette année, les jeunesjoueurs ont été répartis en deux équipes, A et B, et leur palmarès futégalement stupéfiant ».Tout au long de l’année, les entrainements et les compétitions furentorganisés au Beach and Yacht Club de Mamaroneck et, avec l’appui dedeux pros du club, les Sharks furent fin prêts pour attaquer la saison. «Les Junior Varsity n’ont essuyé qu’une seule défaite cette année (contreBrunswick) », souligne Mlle McAndrews.Comme chaque année cependant, la compétition en double constitueun défi majeur. « C’est incroyablement difficile, car si les élèves sontindividuellement excellents, le tennis en double requiert un importanttravail de synchronisation. En dépit de ces contraintes, leurs résultatsfurent tout à fait remarquables ». FASNY Tennis has always been strong, and this season was no different,according to Coach Missy McAndrews. “This year we had an A and a Bteam for the younger players, and each team did wonderfully.”Practicing and competing at the Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club,with the help of two of the Club’s pros, the Sharks hit the courts ready foraction. “The J.V. team only lost one game this year (against BrunswickSchool),” said Ms. McAndrews.One challenge every year, however, is in doubles competition. “That’sreally tough. Everybody does great individually, but pairing up withsomeone and working in synch is hard. Ce fut une saison difficilemais les Sharks ont terminé avec un score tout à fait respectable de quatrevictoires et cinq défaites. Pour Matthieu Rey ’14, ce fut une première ausein d’une équipe de baseball. « J’ai adoré. Je regarde les matchs à la télé etj’ai toujours eu envie de jouer », précise-t-il. Une première également pourNick Staberides, entraîneur, qui a rejoint les Sharks au printemps 2009. Enattendant le printemps prochain, chacun travaille activement à améliorerson jeu. « Nous devons encore nous adapter au niveau de la compétition,ajoute Julian. C’est du baseball de haut niveau. » “For the first time at FASNY, our home opener was a win!” said JulianSalz, ’13, speaking of the team’s win against Brunswick. It was a strongseason, and the Sharks finished out at a respectable 4-5. For MatthieuRey ’14, it was the first opportunity to play on a baseball team. “I lovedit. I’ve watched it on TV and always wanted to play.” Another first-timeron the team was Coach Nick Staberides, who joined the Sharks inspring 2009. While the team is really looking forward to next spring,everyone is still striving to improve. “We still need to adjust to the levelof competition out there,” continued Julian. “It’s a tough level ofbaseball.” 64 | Automne | Autumn | 2009

Portraits d’Anciens Elèves :sur les rives de la TamiseAmedeo d’Amore ’07A Londres, Amedeo d’Amore se sent comme chezlui. « Pour moi, Londres est un New York à l’échelleeuropéenne et je dois avouer qu’en tant que pureNew Yorkais, j’adore ! » Pour Amedeo, la FASNY,c’est dix ans de programmes scolaires rigoureux,de compétitions sportives, de représentationsthéâtrales - parmi lesquelles une parodie mémorable d’un débat présidentiel, avecAmedeo dans le rôle du candidat à la vice-présidence, John Edwards. En septembre2007, il décide de poursuivre ses études universitaires en Politique et Relationsinternationales au Royal Holloway College de Londres.Amedeo se souvient des nombreux débats politiquesavec ses camarades et ses professeurs, en particulierM. Ellinghaus. Il attribue en partie sa réussiteuniversitaire à son éducation bilingue. En attendantl’obtention de son diplôme universitaire, Amedeoconsacre son temps libre aux actions bénévoles. Enoutre, il a initié l’action mondiale Une Heure Pour laTerre à la London School of Economics et participe auComité de direction de l’Association pour l’étude desgroupes ethniques et des mouvements nationalistes.Après une mauvaise blessure qui le force à suspendre ses études, Amedeo trouve retraiteau siège new yorkais d’Action Contre la Faim (ACF), une organisation nongouvernementale qui a pour mission de lutter contre la faim dans le monde et derechercher des solutions pour permettre à terme l’autonomie des zones concernées.Travaillant parallèlement avec les bureaux de New York et de Londres, Amadeo constatecombien sa connaissance du français est précieuse. « Je parle et écris régulièrement enfrançais. La plupart du personnel est ici français », précise-t-il. Amedeo est coordinateurévénementiel et social pour ACF et son « cursus bilingue est un véritable atout et un outilinteractif, à Londres en particulier, qui compte une large communauté française ».Sa formation bilingue et biculturelle a permis à ce jeune New Yorkais de se sentir àLondres comme à la maison : « à Londres, j’adore la diversité culturelle et c’est ce qui rendà mes yeux la ville si captivante ». There is no question about whether or not Amedeo d’Amore feels at home in London.“To me, London is the European version of New York City, and, as a New Yorker, I lovethat!” After 10 years of FASNY academics, various sports teams, several musical theaterproductions, and one memorable mock Presidential debate (playing the role of VPcandidate John Edwards), Amedeo arrived in London in September 2007 to pursue hisundergraduate studies in politics and international relations at Royal Holloway College.Amedeo fondly recalls the many political discussions he had with FASNY classmatesand teachers, such as Mr. Ellinghaus, and he credits his bilingual educationwith helping him succeed in his university studies. In addition to pursuinghis degree, Amedeo dedicates much of his free time to volunteer effortssuch as initiating the first-ever Earth Hour at the London School ofEconomics and serving on LSE’s Executive Committee of the Association ofthe Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism.When an injury forced him to take time off from school, Amedeo foundanother home at the New York headquarters of the French organizationAction Contre la Faim (ACF), a non-profit devoted to saving the lives of severelymalnourished children and adults while seeking long-term solutions to hungerthrough self-sustaining programs. Working at the ACF headquarters in New York, aswell as with the office in London, Amedeo has found his knowledge of Frenchinvaluable. “I regularly speak and write in French, as much of the staff is from France,”he says. Mais son goût pour les relationsinternationales et son amour pour les voyages ne laquittèrent jamais. Il y a trois ans, Daphné décida des’installer à Londres pour poursuivre son rêve : partir àl’étranger et parler anglais. Aujourd’hui, Daphné estDirectrice de la Communication et du Marketing chezAdvent Software, une société spécialisée dans ledéveloppement de logiciels de gestion financière.« Grâce à la FASNY, les langues ont toujours été mon pointfort », nous confie-t-elle, soulignant que son éducation bilingue ing elui ia permis d’intégrerHEC et d’obtenir cet emploi au service du Marketing, où la communication reste unequalité indispensable. Ayant toujours été très aventurière et pour ajouter une corde àson arc, Daphné a choisi d’apprendre le mandarin. Elle est également un membre actifd’Amnesty International au Royaume-Uni. Agissant au sein des quartiers de Soho et deMayfair, elle est en charge du site Internet et des actions de groupe en faveur des droitsde l’homme en Chine. Elle voyage régulièrement, à titre personnel et professionnel, eta récemment visité San Francisco, Edimbourg, Genève, Oslo et la France. Daphné estamplement satisfaite de son travail en Angleterre et, atout non négligeable, ellereste très proche de sa France natale. Daphné Marciel thinks fondly about the four years she spent at FASNY in the1980’s. “I was so happy in the U.S. at FASNY,” she recalls. “I loved the art and musicclasses, which enabled us to be really creative, and I enjoyed being in the showevery year…those are really good memories.” Daphné moved back toAlumni Profiles :London’s Bridge to FASNYFrance to continue her studies in Paris, but her flair for international studiesand her “taste for traveling” never escaped her. Daphné moved to Londonthree years ago to carry out her dream of living abroad again and using herEnglish. She is currently the marketing communications manager atAdvent Software, a financial software company.“Thanks to FASNY, languages were always one of my very strong points,”she says, acknowledging that her bilingual education helped her get intoHEC, one of the top Grandes Ecoles, and was also crucial to securing hermarketing job, where good communication is a vital quality. Always theadventurous student, Daphné is now learning Mandarin Chinese as anaddition to her list of linguistic accomplishments. She is also an activemember oftheMayfair and Soho Group of Amnesty International U.K. In this role, she isin charge of the website and the group actions on human rights in China. She travels forboth professional and personal reasons, and has recently visited San Francisco,Edinburgh, Geneva, Oslo, and France. Comme bonnombre d’anciens élèves, Alexis sesouvient de ses professeurs deLarchmont avec une certaine nostalgie. Deux années seulement sur cecampus, mais, grâce à eux, « aller à l’école devenait un plaisir ».Aujourd’hui, Alexis exerce le droit et se concentre sur la résolution de conflitsinternationaux. Il vit à Londres depuis 4 ans et apprécie énormément cette ville, qu’ilqualifie d’unique. « Il y a quatre ans, une formidable opportunité professionnelle s’estprésentée à moi. Et Londres m’a pris sous son charme. C’est un endroit merveilleux pourse mêler à une foule cosmopolite et l’une des villes les plus dynamiques d’Europe sur leplan culturel et économique. » Mais, malgré son attachement à la ville, Alexis resteavant tout un globe-trotteur. Portaits d’Anciens Elèves : sur les rives de la Tamise |Alumni Profiles : London’s Bridge to FASNYAlong with language, science, and social studies, Alexis Martinez took away from FASNYhis first lessons in fundraising. “Annie Michel helped organize a ski trip for the Grade 5classes in 1990. In order to get enough funding, we had to bake cakes and otherdelicious food that we sold at bake sales during school breaks,” he says, recallingthe beautiful Delicieuse Vente signs that Ms. Michel helped the students make. Aswith many FASNY alums, Alexis considers his teachers to be one of the mostmemorable aspects of the two years he spent in Larchmont, noting that theteachers “made going to school more pleasant.”A ses moments perdus, Alexis s’investit énormémentdans l’équipe pro-bono du cabinet d’avocats dans lequel il travaille, agissantrégulièrement en faveur du Haut Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les Réfugiés(UNHCR, ou HCR dans l’espace francophone). « Le HCR intervient généralement lorsd’audiences visant à établir une jurisprudence en matière de protection internationaledes réfugiés, explique Alexis. Son rôle, en tant qu’intervenant, est d’aviser et de donnerson opinion sur les lois internationales en vigueur. It does not specificallyendorse the position of the government or of the individual partyto the legal proceedings (although, in practice, UNHCR oftenintervenes to prevent restrictions on refugee protection).The probonoteam helps the UNHCR draft position papers for thegovernment and intervenes in English court proceedings toadvise on international refugee law issues,” he adds.Alexis admits that he probably would not have studiedinternational law or decided to live abroad, had he not hadsuch a wonderful experience at FASNY. Portraits de donateurs | Profiles in GivingLa famille Mena : Gabriela,Carlos, Pablo ’10 et Sofia ’12Dans la famille Mena, la vie a le doux parfum du Mexique,de la préparation du dîner à la conversation autour de latable familiale. « Nous préparons même des lasagnesmexicaines, s’exclame Gabriela, mère de deux enfantsscolarisés à la FASNY, Pablo ’10 et Sofia ’12, et épouse deCarlos, Directeur Général chez Banorte Securities. Nousvivons au rythme américain, du moins pour les repas, maisdès que vous franchissez le seuil de notre porte, c’est leMexique. Nous sommes unis, foncièrement attachés auxvaleurs familiales et nous accordons une importance touteparticulière à notre culture ».En 1991, il y a un peu plus de 18 ans, la famille Menaquittait le Mexique pour rejoindre les Etats-Unis. Unemission professionnelle de deux ans qui prit fin lorsqueCarlos décida de changer d’entreprise et obtint sa cartede résident permanent. Une terre nouvelle sur laquellenaquirent Pablo et Sofia. « Aujourd’hui, nous n’avonsplus le statut d’expatriés mais nous ne sommes pas nonplus Français. Aussi la décision d’inscrire les enfants à laFASNY fut-elle difficile. Même si les frais de scolarité sontmoins importants que dans d’autres écoles privées de larégion, le coût reste pour nous conséquent. Ayant moimêmeété scolarisée au Lycée franco-mexicain, j’ai tout desuite su combien il était important que mes enfantsapprennent le français et l’anglais, tout en cultivant leurlangue maternelle, raconte Gabriela. Mais ce n’est pas cequi nous a fait initialement choisir la FASNY. Noussouhaitions que nos enfants bénéficient d’un programmescolaire rigoureux, d’une éducation diversifiée et d’unenvironnement social multiculturel. Une combinaison queseule la FASNY est en mesure d’offrir. » Pablo et Sofiaintégrèrent l’Ecole en Grande Section de maternelle ets’épanouissent à merveille dans cet environnementtrilingue. La transition entre la Greenwich Catholic Schoolet la FASNY fut si douce pour Pablo qu’il s’écria à la fin desa première journée d’école : « Maman, j’adore manouvelle école ! Tout le monde est comme moi, ils viennenttous d’un pays différent ».C’est le sentiment d’appartenance à la FASNY et cebesoin de souligner leur attachement à l’école quipousse la famille Mena, chaque année depuis 1997, àsoutenir la FASNY. « La FASNY n’est pas parfaite ; nousaurions besoin d’un campus supplémentaire mais nousgardons toujours espoir qu’un jour notre vision d’un seulet même campus devienne réalité. Il est évident que nosenfants ne seront plus là pour en profiter, mais ce fut notrerêve depuis le jour où nous sommes arrivés à la FASNY.C’est la raison pour laquelle, chaque année, nous donnonsà la FASNY, en fonction de nos moyens, pour lesgénérations présentes et futures ».Leur loyauté fut clairement confirmée le jour où Pablorevint à la FASNY après un an passé à la Trinity HighSchool, où il effectua son année de 3 ème. « Dès que nousavons appris l’ouverture des classes de Première et deTerminale, il nous est apparu évident de revenir à l’endroitmême où les enfants se sont toujours sentis comme chezeux », ajoute Gabriela. Pablo est quant à lui plus quesatisfait même si l’année scolaire s’annonce bienremplie, entre les demandes d’inscription à l’université,le programme scolaire rigoureux de la filière S(Mathématiques, Sciences et Vie de la Terre, Physique-Chimie) et ses matchs de tennis. Sophia est unedanseuse accomplie qui partage le reste de son tempsentre l’école et les devoirs. La famille Mena adorevoyager et profite de la proximité de New York pour serendre régulièrement à Broadway.Enfin, si vous vous demandez ce qui donne aux lasagnesce petit goût de Mexique, Gabriela ajoute entre chaquecouche un peu de tomates, d’origan et de fromageblanc, une recette empruntée au village natal de samaman. Tout comme la FASNY, les lasagnes de la familleMena sont un mélange de cultures, riches en diversité etsavoureuses à souhait. 88 | Automne | Autumn | 2009

The Mena Family: Gabriela,Carlos, Pablo ’10, Sofia ’12Everything from dinner to the dinner table conversationhas a Mexican rhythm in the Mena household. “We evenmake Mexican lasagna,” exclaims Gabriela Mena,mother of two FASNY students, Pablo ’10 and Sofia ’12,and wife to Carlos, who works as a managing director atBanorte Securities. “We have an American schedulewhen it comes to meals, but once you enter our home,it’s like a Mexican household. We are family-oriented,very close-knit, and very insistent about our culture.”Eighteen years ago, in 1991, the Mena family movedfrom Mexico City to New York, for a short-term stay. Twoyears turned into lifetimes for the American-born Pabloand Sofia when Carlos changed jobs and obtained agreen card, changing their status in the U.S. “We weren’texpats anymore, and we aren’t French, so it has beenchallenging to afford FASNY, although it is less expensivethan other private schools in the area. Since I attendedthe Lycée Franco-Mexicain, I felt it was important forthe children to speak French as well as their nativeSpanish and the English they were learning in preschool,”Gabriela notes. “But this is not the primaryreason we chose FASNY. It was important that mychildren were exposed to academic rigor, to a moreworld-oriented education, and to a multicultural socialenvironment, one that only FASNY can offer.” Both Pabloand Sofia started at FASNY in Kindergarten and havethrived in a trilingual environment. Pablo was so athomewith the move from Greenwich Catholic School inPre-K to FASNY that he exclaimed the first day of school,“Mom, I love it; everyone is like me; everyone is fromsomewhere else.”It’s this feeling of belonging and wanting to show theycare and love FASNY that motivates this family to giveback. The Menas have been loyal donors every yearsince they enrolled in 1997. “FASNY is not a perfectschool; it lacks a campus, but we hope that someday ourvision for one campus will become a reality. We knowour kids will not see it, but we have been dreamingabout it since we arrived. This is why we believe ingiving what we can, for now and for future generations.”La famille Mena | The Mena Family : Gabriela, Carlos, Pablo ’10, Sofia ’12Their loyalty was further demonstrated when Pabloreturned to FASNY after a year away in ninth grade atTrinity High School. “As soon as we learned that FASNYwas adding 11th and 12th grades, he couldn’t wait to beback in the place where he felt so at home,” explainsGabriela. Looking forward to a busy year with collegeapplications and the rigorous S (mathematics, biologyand natural sciences, physics, and chemistry)concentration, Pablo is very content. He plays tennis forfun. Sofia, who is an accomplished competitive dancer,fills her other hours with school and homework. Thefamily loves to travel and takes advantage of theproximity of New York City and Broadway.In case you wonder what gives her lasagna Mexicanflavor, Gabriela adds a little tomato, oregano, andcottage cheese to the layers, recalling one of hermother’s hometown recipes.
