PUCA - Réemploi et reconfiguration thermique des fenêtres en fin de viePARTIE 1[1.57]4.9 – SOME FACTS IN FAVOR OF THE SAVING OF HISTORIC WOODEN WINDOW UNITSIssues of air infiltration and the loss of heat are of paramount concern to people intent on preservingtheir historic wooden windows, but if treated correctly, much can be done to make the units muchmore energy efficient. In addition, evidence suggests that maintaining existing windows can beconsiderably more cost effective over the option of replacement windows both in payback time andthe life of the units themselves. Although one may achieve some energy savings, it will take decades(and believe it or not, in some cases centuries) to recoup the initial investment on certainreplacement windows.Engineering calculations for the combination of a storm window and a wood window is better thannormal insulated glass. The newer high performance glass energy savings are so small that anengineering energy-use and expenditure calculation indicates that new windows are an extremelybad investment savings compared with a combined wood and storm window. It takes 240 years for payback on a low-e replacement window and about 40 years to recoup the costof standard replacement windows. Those payback years do not take into account the considerableJuin 2012Les Bâtisseurs d’Emmaüs159
