Il y a dans Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot avec levrai rire du plus beau burlesque, la légère mélodie de l’exil.from the first image in Mr Hulot's Holiday we feel a kind of backwash in the passing of time, the coming and goingof holidaymakers in the seaside resort, with their holiday gear and beach wear, a small troop of townspeople whoarrive on the shore like fairground entertainers about to perform. Acquaintances from last year are greeted andeverybody unpacks, sets up camp, moves in and cheerfully enjoys the seaside according to the old ritual. Afterperforming this leisure number, the ephemeral campsite breaks up once again and the holidaymakers say goodbyeuntil next summer.Tati's films show an obsession with the provisional festive occasion that allows everybody to briefly forget theevents of the world, the war, the speeches, the stock exchange, society's mechanical efficiency. In the midst of this tribe of grumpy waiters and stuck-up waitresses, children in sandals and ice-cream sellers, idle youngpeople, obstinate sports players, dreamy women and weary men, Hulot arrives with his tightrope dancer's elegance to upsetthe peace and quiet of the Hôtel de la Plage with his magnificent mistakes, his clumsiness and carelessness. His spectacularimprovisations at sports – frenetic tennis, whirlwind ping-pong, broken-backed canoe and fireworks – and his attempts atpolite sociability are all delicately catastrophic. He seems to be an exile in the holidaymakers' camp. He greets often andapologises a lot. He floats and dithers and charms. The excitement and joys of the summer leave a feeling of dizziness after the show moves on. In Mr Hulot's Holiday, along withthe true laughter of the finest burlesque, we hear the faint melody of exile.Tati sur le tournage desVacances de Monsieur Hulot en 1951,avec la Caméflex, première camérareflex 35 mm portableTati during the filming ofMr Hulot’s Holiday in 1951,with the Caméflex, the firstportable 35 mm reflex camera8
