Development of Rue Garibaldi in Lyon
Rue Garibaldi from Rue Vauban to Avenue Berthelot is undergoing
a requalification which should wipe away any memory of its
“urban motorway” appearance. The objective is to create a new
landscape, with the emphasis on pedestrianisation and green
modes of transport designed intelligently with the car.
An innovative “rainwater” component has been integrated
in the project.
2 nd life for a hopper
The old hoppers had become empty spaces, one of them, «Vauban»,
now has a very different future. It will be converted into
a rainwater recovery tank. A backfill of sand and pebbles
will filter the rainwater which will be routed into large vessels
with a capacity of 800 m 3 . Pumped by the Sanitation Department’s
vehicles, the water will be used for road-cleaning purposes.
Another use has also been identified: the watering of new
green spaces. This water will be re-used by means of hydrants
supplied by the underground basin. The installation of this
innovative equipment is regarded as experimental and as such
will be monitored over its initial years of operation in order to
obtain a sound feedback of experience so that similar equipment
can be installed in the context of future projects.
A complete restructuring of modes
of rainwater management
In addition to the re-use of a hopper and some of the rainwater
for cleaning and green spaces, the project for the requalification
of Rue Garibaldi incorporates more generally the need to
manage run-off water at source by the collection, storage
and percolation into the ground after pre-treatment, of
rainwater from surfaces other than those dedicated to motor
vehicles, by means of swales integrated in the green spaces
created. The project thus provides a significant improvement
to the existing situation by the disconnection of some of the
rainwater hitherto sent to the combined sewerage system.
The percolation of this rainwater and the increase in planted
spaces in this urban axis will also help to limit the urban
heat-island effect in this city-centre district.
