MARQUIS’ REACTION IN HARM REDUCTION IN FESTIVE PLACE :
AN UNDERVALUED ON-SITE PILL TESTING OF ECSTASY TABLETS

Background: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the reliability (sensibility and specificity)
of a pill testing (Marquis’ reaction) to detect MDMA in ecstasy tablets. The second
objective is to highlight the linear relation between MDMA concentration and intensity of
Marquis’ reaction.
Methods: A total of 66 ecstasy tablets were collected and analyzed, between 2000 and 2001,
with double blind procedure using gas chromatography and Marquis’ reaction. Then, the
concordance between the results of laboratory analysis and in situ pill testing was verified.
Results: Pill testing detects MDMA in all tablets containing this substance (sensibility and specificity
