Office-based practice practitioners and addiction specialist have collaborated with community
pharmacist to dispense buprenorphine since 1989 and methadone since 1994 in the metropolitan
area of Bayonne covering an estimated 315,000 inhabitants.
Objectives: 1) To describe patients treated by buprenorphine and methadone in community
pharmacies in April 2006; 2) to assess their relationship with pharmacists and pharmacists’
involvement.
Methods: This was a two-part-questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey. The first part of the
questionnaire was sent to all 140 pharmacies of the area. It gathered number of patients
concerned, pharmacists’ practice, quality of pharmacist-patient relationship and involvement
in training and networking with other professionals. The second part of the questionnaire was
sent to pharmacist for each declared patient to collect individual patient information: dosage,
dispensing modalities, suspected misuse, other prescriptions.
Results: 135 (96%) pharmacists replied to the first questionnaire. They reported 450 patients:
121 treated by methadone and 329 by buprenorphine. Those involved in networking and training
had higher scores on the pharmacist-patient relationship. 376 patient's questionnaires
were returned: 112 methadone patients (average dose 55.7 mg (SD=36.2) and 264 buprenorphine
(average dose 8.3 mg (SD=5.8). Mean age was 39.2 (SD=7.3) and 72% were male. Misuse
was suspected for 17% and medication resale for 10%. 44% had another psychotropic medication
dispensed in the same pharmacy.
Conclusion: Patient-pharmacist relationship was positively related to pharmacists’ involvement
in networking and training. Within these surveyed pharmacies 30% of patients were treated
with methadone. During the same time 91 patients received methadone in a Treatment Center
in the same area. In April 2006, 43% of opiate maintained patients in this area were receiving
methadone and 57% buprenorphine.
