La femel<strong>le</strong> mesure 5 mm <strong>et</strong> <strong>le</strong> mâ<strong>le</strong> 4 mm. La tête a un rostre triangulaire avec des lobes latéraux proéminents. La première antenne porte quelques soies. Le gnathopode 1 est oblique <strong>et</strong> convexe. <strong>Les</strong> segments de l'urosome de c<strong>et</strong>te espèce sont fusionnés, sans crête latéra<strong>le</strong>. <strong>Les</strong> uropodes sont insérés latéra<strong>le</strong>ment. • ECOLOGIE/BIOLOGIE Biotope : il construit des tubes de vase <strong>dans</strong> <strong>le</strong>s stipes des algues, surtout <strong>dans</strong> ceux de Laminaria, <strong>dans</strong> <strong>le</strong>s éponges, <strong>le</strong>s hydrozoaires, <strong>le</strong>s tubes de certains annélides comme <strong>le</strong> genre Pomatoceros <strong>et</strong> <strong>dans</strong> <strong>le</strong> sédiment. On trouve c<strong>et</strong>te espèce de la zone intertida<strong>le</strong> inférieure à la zone subtida<strong>le</strong> jusqu'à 50 m de profondeur. Mode de nutrition : détritivore, il capte <strong>et</strong> amasse <strong>le</strong>s particu<strong>le</strong>s en créant un circuit d'eau entre ses antennes développées. Cyc<strong>le</strong> de vie : <strong>le</strong>s œufs sont couvés <strong>dans</strong> une chambre incubatrice, <strong>le</strong> marsupium, située entre <strong>le</strong>s appendices thoraciques de la femel<strong>le</strong>. A l'éclosion des œufs, <strong>le</strong>s juvéni<strong>le</strong>s sont semblab<strong>le</strong>s aux adultes. • UTILISATION Inconnue • DISTRIBUTION Origine : <strong>le</strong>s plus anciennes signalisations de c<strong>et</strong>te espèce ont été effectuées en Nouvel<strong>le</strong>-Zélande, ce qui laisse penser qu'il s'agit de son aire native. Ceci n'étant pas confirmé, on peut considérer c<strong>et</strong>te espèce comme cryptogénique. Introduction : c<strong>et</strong>te espèce a été décrite en Europe pour la première fois en Angl<strong>et</strong>erre, à Plymouth <strong>dans</strong> <strong>le</strong>s années 1930, puis en France en 1936 <strong>dans</strong> l'estuaire de la Rance en Br<strong>et</strong>agne. El<strong>le</strong> a ensuite été introduite en Irlande <strong>dans</strong> <strong>le</strong>s années 1970. Depuis 1976 on la trouve éga<strong>le</strong>ment <strong>dans</strong> la baie de Seine. Avant 2000, el<strong>le</strong> a été signalée au niveau des épaves des côtes belges. Distribution régiona<strong>le</strong> : l'espèce a été signalée à Wimereux <strong>dans</strong> l'inventaire de Glaçon (1977). El<strong>le</strong> est maintenant abondante <strong>dans</strong> <strong>le</strong>s prélèvements du Pays de Caux, du détroit du Pas-de- Calais, au large de Boulogne-sur-Mer, de Calais <strong>et</strong> de Dunkerque. Distribution globa<strong>le</strong> : Nouvel<strong>le</strong>-Zélande, Tasmanie, Australie, Méditerranée, côte ouest de l'Europe, Manche, mer du Nord, mer de Wadden, Skagerrak. • MODES D’INTRODUCTION ET DE DISPERSION Comme son origine, son mode d'introduction n'est pas certain. C<strong>et</strong>te espèce a probab<strong>le</strong>ment été introduite par <strong>le</strong>s salissures des coques de bateaux. Le transfert avec l'introduction des huîtres n'est pas improbab<strong>le</strong> non plus. La progression de c<strong>et</strong>te espèce est plutôt <strong>le</strong>nte. Ceci peut s'expliquer par <strong>le</strong> fait que M. sextonae n'a pas de phase planctonique <strong>dans</strong> son cyc<strong>le</strong> de vie, limitant sa dispersion. La température est sûrement un facteur important pour sa distribution. • IMPACTS Sur l'habitat <strong>et</strong> <strong>le</strong>s espèces natives : son impact sur l'environnement est négligeab<strong>le</strong>. Cependant, une étude a montré que son augmentation en abondance était liée à la diminution en abondance de l'espèce native Crassicorophium bonellii.
