Passages
Lettre de la Rédaction | Letter from the Editor
Our feature article “Bilingualism,” by Bob Leonhardt,
(page 6) sets the stage for this issue of FASNYPages. You
will notice a marked difference in format, one which
hearkens more to our School mission. For the most part,
articles have been written in the language of choice and
the voice of the writer, and we have engaged many
individuals in our community as contributors. Very few
of the pieces have been translated or written by our
office staff.
We also have chosen this new format because, by
encouraging community involvement in the writing of
the school magazine, we add another building block to
FASLink, our community forum that draws the campuses together. A further format
change will occur in September, when we launch the new FASNY website, which will
be conducive to e-published documents, and where FASNYPages will make its home
as of the autumn 2010 issue. This responds to our current needs as a school with the
reduction of translating, printing, and mailing costs. As always, we welcome your
comments on the changes, your story ideas, and your contributions as writers.
Student reporters, as well as parent and teacher correspondents, make this issue rich in
content. They wrote very articulate stories about their trips this year to Germany (page
30), Spain (page 28), and Washington, D.C. (page 26). With the financial help of the
Senior Parents’ Fund (page 49), we expect to hear about many such cultural
opportunities in the future. Thanks are due to last year’s senior parents, who had the
vision to provide the seed money for this fund, thus starting a tradition and setting a
high bar for future senior parents.
And speaking of last year’s class, you can follow the college progress of our first true
alumni in freshman year interviews with Claire, Alex, Quentin, Soraya, Flaam, and
Stéphanie (page 52), who gave their impressions of FASNY in the last issue. In a related
article, several of our 2009 graduates returned to FASNY to give their two cents to high
school students on navigating the admissions process as well as freshman year (page
23) in college. We learned there is some serious studying going on amidst all the fun!
And, once again, our entire student body has responded to a crisis beyond their
backyard, initiating a community service effort for Haiti (page 39). Although we would
have helped nonetheless, our French ties to this devastated country will help motivate
and reinforce the ethic of “service to others” that we want to instill in our children as
they make their passages through life.
All the best,
Quel est votre parcours ? | What is
your background?
« Je suis né en France, à Saint-Germain,
et je suis arrivé aux Etats-Unis à l’âge de
24 ans. J’ai effectué toute ma scolarité en
France. Pendant cinq ans, j’ai poursuivi
des études scientifiques. En parallèle,
j’étudiais également la musique
classique.
London School of Economics. » | “I was born in France in St. Germain and came to the
United States at age 24. All my schooling was in France. I did scientific studies for five
years as well as classical music. I was married before I left France to Hélène, who
teaches History and Geography at FASNY in Grades 8, 9, 11, and 12. We have two
children, who both attended FASNY. Julien is studying management at Binghamton
and Raphaelle is working on her Masters degree at the London School of Economics.”
| What attracts you to FASNY?
» | “I love FASNY because it is truly
a bilingual, bicultural school. It has evolved over the years; it is much more bilingual
and bicultural than it was 15 years ago when I first arrived. We have extracurricular
activities, clubs, organized sports, student government, and community service—all
very American school activities. When I was hired by our founders, I was brought in to
help Americanize the School. Many people, such as Helaine Couty, who introduced the
counseling system here, helped me to achieve this goal. Previously, I had worked for six
years at the Kew Forest School in New York City, and my profile of knowing the French
system and the independent school system was a big advantage.”
Joël Peinado : Futur Chef d’établissement
Future Head of School
| What
was the turning point that made you realize you would be interested in being
head of school ?
» | “Without question, adding the 11th and 12th grades and becoming a
complete high school. Now I say, this is done, what’s next?”
| What
do you see on the horizon for facilities?
» | “We should have a
programmatic approach to our facilities situation. We did studies a year or so ago and
determined that 1,000 students would be the proper number to satisfy our program
needs. The School needs to stay in the region, ideally on one campus, but this may be
impossible because of our space needs. We need to explore all our options.”
| What are the
advantages of making this announcement two years in advance?
chaud. » | “It is a huge advantage to be able to work with Bob Leonhardt in this
capacity for two years to allow for a smooth transition. We will be beginning the
search for my replacement in the fall, which will give me a full year to work with him
or her. In the meantime, I will be involved with the Finance Committee of the Board of
Trustees, with Admissions, get to know the Lower School and Pre-School, and become
involved in fund raising. Most new heads do not have the opportunity to ‘hit the
ground running’ as I will!”
More than 220 parents, faculty, and staff attended the annual State of the School
dinner on January 21. Board Chair Mischa Zabotin updated the community on the
School’s finances, facilities, and tuition schedule for the coming year, and Head of
School Bob Leonhardt gave an overview of FASNY’s accomplishments and plans on the
academic and programmatic fronts. Highlighting the presentations was Mischa
Zabotin’s announcement that Joël Peinado will become the new Head of School
succeeding Bob Leonhardt on July 1, 2012 . Between now and then, Joël will assume
State of the School Assembly
and Community Dinner
the title of Deputy Head, working closely with Bob to search for a new Upper Division
head for 2011–12 and to ensure the smoothest possible transition. The usual question
and answer period after the presentations focused on concerns from non-Francophone
parents who wonder about the ease with which their young children will become fully
bilingual by the time they reach high school age. Non-Francophone parents with older
children offered testimonials about the success their sons and daughters had enjoyed
in attaining this goal at FASNY.
By Bob Leonhardt
is so profoundly implanted in
the French-American School’s mission and
daily life that we sometimes either take it
Bilingualism
for granted or underestimate its rewards.
We know bilingualism offers certain practical advantages,
like the enhancement of job possibilities in an
increasingly competitive market. We know also that it
encourages the respectful consideration of different
viewpoints and cultures, and that it trains students to see
the common humanity of people who initially appear
different or “foreign.”
But bilingualism transcends the realm of the pragmatic
and the ethical. Recent studies indicate that bilingualism
that begins during the critical nursery or kindergarten
years also qualitatively enhances a child’s general
cognitive development. According to Professor Jean Petit,
a psycholinguist at the Universities of Reims and
Constance, rigorous scientific assessments done in
Canada and replicated in other countries, including
France, have led researchers to the following conclusions:
• In addition to the obvious advantage of learning two
languages, bilingual students achieve native language
mastery that exceeds the level of monolingual subjects
with the same first language. This superiority is due to
the “conscious and unconscious work of interlinguistic
comparison carried out by these children as a result of
their bilingualism.”
• The general intellectual stimulation produced by
the regular use of two languages makes these
children “significantly superior” to their monolingual
counterparts in the area of abstraction, symbolism,
flexibility with concepts, and problem-solving ability.
In an international symposium held in November 2001 on
“Collateral Languages,” Jean-Marie Bressand of the same
Association asserted that bilingual education goes far
beyond mere pedagogical technique. Bressand refers to
bilingualism as a “genuine revolution in thought,” in part
because it allows one to describe in two languages the
same idea, the same situation, and the same object, and
therefore leads to a better grasp of the truth. Emphasizing
the open-mindedness that bilingualism promotes,
Bressand adds: “. . . understanding that difference is not
necessarily bad but, on the contrary, enriching and in the
end far more complementary than conflicting . . . (allows
a hitherto monolingual person to) commit to the path of
tolerance and the outlook of universality . . . . ”
More recent studies confirm these optimistic assessments.
One, entitled “Study on the Contribution of Multilingualism
1 to Creativity,” was conducted during the period May
2008–June 2009 for the European Commission. Its
www.FASNY.org | 7
extensive scope comprised an analysis of European and
international scientific literature, online and telephone
surveys, and the identification of case studies.
The study is particularly provocative on the question of
creativity, which it defines as “imaginative activity
fashioned so as to produce outcomes that are both original
and of value.” It concludes that although the available
evidence “shows that we are at a very early stage of
understanding the impact of multilingualism on the brain,
and on any form of resulting outcome such as creativity . . .
knowledge of another language is considered as more
likely to increase cognitive functioning than the reverse.”
Further, although neuroscience is still at a very early stage
of understanding the impact of multilingualism on the
brain, the study’s findings nonetheless demonstrate six
“evidence clusters” indicating a greater potential for
• Reduced age-related mental diminishment
Knowledge of languages appear to exercise the brain
and to retard certain forms of dementia. According
to the study, “the multilingual’s ability to resist
neuropathological damage is presently considered
as in the range of two to four years.” The good news
here is that multilingualism promotes cognitive
health among older people.
Schools such as ours, which operate on the premise that
the early acquisition of two languages is possible for
all children, are a relatively recent phenomenon. Until
the 20th century, bilingualism due to the early-age
immersion had been the prerogative of privilege.
Among the ancients, the children of patrician Roman
families learned Greek with Greek slaves. Those who
know Montaigne’s magnificent essay, “On the Education
of Children,” will remember that the young Michel’s first
react constructively to new situations. As Jan Figel, the
former European Commissioner for Education, Training,
and Culture writes: “The major future challenges in the
educational field are how to reform our learning
systems to prepare our young people for jobs that do
not exist yet, using technologies that have not been
invented yet, in order to solve problems that haven’t
been identified yet” (Executive Summary, p. 8).
Multilingualism, as the study concludes, is a “resource
that could play a key role in repsonding to (these)
challenges.” At FASNY, we do much more than promote
bilingualism: we educate the whole child. But bi- and
multi-lingualism remain at the core of our mission, and
we can take heart from the mounting scientific evidence
suggesting that our work places us in the vanguard of
education for the challenges of the 21st century.
multilingualism promotes cognitive health
creativity among people who communicate through
more than one language:
• Enhanced mental flexibility, enabling the development
of special “multi-competences,” particularly
crucial in the so-called Information Age, which
requires the development of sophisticated skills in
thinking and communication.
• Enhanced problem-solving capability, including
the ability to solve cognitively complex challenges,
think abstractly, formulate creative hypotheses, and
concentrate intensely on specifics regardless of
distractions. This capability enhances the ability
to perform more than one task simultaneously
(“multitasking”).
• Expanded metalinguistic ability, in other words,
the awareness of language as a tool for thinking, the
acumen to “read between the lines,” to understand
“subtext,” or go beyond explicit statement.
• Enhanced learning capacity, including superior
short-term memory function, which enables the
brain to hold information for extended periods while
the thinking processes are engaged rather than
merely add new information to what the mind has
already stored.
• Enhanced interpersonal ability, such as contextual
sensitivity, skill in “reading situations,” and the ability
to listen.
language was Latin, learned as a toddler at the feet of
a non-francophone German scholar imported for
this purpose by Montaigne’s newly ennobled father,
who wanted his son to enjoy
the benefits of “new learning.”
Noble Russian and German
families—one thinks of Tolstoy
and Goethe—offered their
children French governesses,
as did the English aristocracy.
Sometimes the results were
ironic if not downright comical.
English courtiers had to hire
tutors to teach them their
supposed native language
during the 100 Years’ Wars
against France. Centuries later,
some of the Russian nobility
took Russian lessons as a
patriotic duty in the wake of
Napolean Bonaparte’s invasion.
The students we are educating
today will reach adulthood in
a world where change occurs
with increasing rapidity. To
thrive in this environment,
they will need skills and
attitudes enabling them to
What is your native language and how did you
learn languages in school?
“My native tongue is French, but I also speak Spanish. I
learned English in the sixth grade in an international
school in St. Germain. Classes were set up according to
ability for the non-native speakers, and I was lucky to be
in the advanced class. I took English until 12th grade
and visited England twice during high school for twoweek
periods, living in a family setting.”
What is your philosophy on learning languages?
“The younger the child, the easier it is to learn another
language. In the brain, before an early age, second
language acquisition is done in an area of the brain close
to the area involved in the acquisition of the native tongue.
This is not true later in life. Later, when you learn two
languages at the same time, vocabulary is stored in
different places. As a result, the child may learn less
vocabulary in each language. However, when the two
systems begin to work together, the child ends up with a
much greater overall vocabulary. The same is true for
usage. In our School, we see this in our children at all levels
and this is why bilinguilism, particularly in an academic
environment, is a long process. By 11th grade, the child
performs just as well or better in both languages.”
What are the challenges for a child in our
Pre-School whose parents do not speak French?
“The child will turn to his or her dominant language if
French is not spoken at home. It is, therefore, very
important that the child get enough exposure to the
language and enough support at home. The child will
speak French fluently if he or she connects emotionally
with the language. By this I mean the language must be
relevant to the students and be meaningful in their life
outside of school. To achieve this, parents can host an au
pair, arrange play dates with French-speaking children,
vacation in French-speaking countries during the summer,
or encourage their child to do a school semester in France.
Families who join our school without French spoken at
home must make a commitment, realize the importance
of motivation to the child, and need to be patient. By 11th
grade, their child will be doing high-level thinking in both
French and in English. In order to achieve this result, it is
critical to keep the child in a bilingual environment past
eighth grade. High school is the time when students fully
develop analytical and critical skills, and when they
deepen their study of literature. ”
Why is French the second language of choice?
“French is spoken in many more countries than you
realize. The French system is so strong. It teaches
students to analyze and develop critical thinking skills
and is an ideal complement to the strengths of the
American philosophy and approach to education. For
those who travel, there are French programs all over the
world. All French schools follow the same curriculum, so
the transition is seamless.”
“I’ve been at FASNY for 11 years now, but my accent is
still strong,” laughs the French-born Nadège Crespin, a
Kindergarten and Grade 1 teaching assistant. Originally
hailing from Tours, France, Ms. Crespin said even though
the road to bilingualism can be difficult, it’s more than
worth it in the long-run. “You can move from one
culture to the other,” she explained. “Especially today, in
a global market, you can travel freely. Plus, once you
know two languages, it’s even easier to learn another.”
Achieving linguistic perfection isn’t easy. “I’ve been in
the U.S. for 26 years, but I’ve made a lot of mistakes,” Ms.
Crespin admitted, “mistakes such as mispronunciations.
I used to say crunching instead of crushing. You know,
‘He’s totally crunching you.’ But, in spite of everything, I
have become more Americanized, except for
breakfast—still very French, just coffee and bread.”
The Queens College graduate does practice what she
said, revealing the key to staying bilingual.
« Pouvoir parler anglais m’a apporté une formidable
ouverture d’esprit », confie Véronique Martin, Coordinatrice
In his third year teaching ESL at FASNY, Jess
Mr. C’s foundation in bilingualism is an important
part of his life. The City College of New York
MR. C
English to Speakers of Other Languages. “I’ve been
studying successful bilingualism and what it takes to
achieve that.” According to Mr. C, even the students
who struggle are more accomplished than they may
seem. “They might not know it, but they’re already
more advanced than most of us. They function in two
languages every day. If being monolingual is like
having a single engine in your brain, then being
bilingual is like having two. You have twice the capacity,
twice the ability.”
FASLink: Career and Community Networking
by Nadège Franken and Meg Drago, FASNY Parents and FASNYPAT Co-Chairs
Given the challenging environment we live in today, networking is a natural resource
to help us connect. We’re networking in our careers, on the Internet, at school, at the
gym, while walking our dogs, even playing with our children outside.
On December 1, FASNYPAT launched its first career and community networking event,
FASLink. Many of us have a passion, an idea, or a project aimed at our professional
career or personal development. Consisting of workshops on topics such as career
transition and networking—all of which focused on the professions and interests
of the attendees—the first FASLink event was considered a success. Ending with a
speed-networking activity, the night went so well attendees had to be asked to leave
as the evening came to an end.
Why not benefit from each other by participating in our own FASNY network? This is
what FASLink is all about—the enthusiasm, the creativity, the lives of those in our
community. We all are part of FASNY. We all are the driving purpose behind FASLink.
Bienvenue !
L’ambiance détendue a
Once again this year, FASNYPAT volunteers outdid
themselves by creating a Thanksgiving feast that
Goblins, Ghouls, and
Along with traditional ghoulish garb, Halloween 2009
In Mamaroneck, there were cereal killers, a ballet
Discovering D.C. by Catherine Hampton ‘12
The Capitol
October marked FASNY’s second annual 10th grade
trip to Washington D.C., and on behalf of this year’s
10th graders, it’s safe to say we loved it.
On our first day, we set out to the Spy Museum.
Crowding into the elevators of the museum, we
were given instructions by our guide to assume a
cover identity and pretend we were spies. Under an
alias, we roamed the halls of the museum, gasping
at the cool gadgets—a lipstick laser, a shoe bomb,
007’s smart car. But there was history to take in as
well; we read stories of espionage during the
resistance of World War II.
Over the next few days we visited the Library of
Congress, the Capitol, and the Supreme Court. It was
so amazing to walk in their halls and be in a place
where so much history—history that influences our
daily lives—had taken place. At the Capitol, we
were allowed to attend a session of the House of
Representatives, making the visit a highlight of the
trip. The New York Times published an article about
the session on the front page the next day.
MAIN IMAGE: The John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame in
Arlington National Cemetery
During the trip, we visited countless museums;
however the Newseum was a student favorite. There
were many exhibits focused on news, including an
exhibit on 9/11, Pulitzer Prize-winning photos, and
another on Woodstock. The students were so interested
in the museum that we asked to stay longer!
Sunset never stopped us. At night, we would stay
out late either touring or having dinner. One
particular night, we went on a guided tour of the
city. Visiting the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington
Monument, the Mall, and the Vietnam Memorial
under twilight proved to be an extraordinary way
of discovering the beauty of the city as we all
looked out across the Mall to the Capitol and saw
the lights surrounding the Washington Monument,
piercing the sky.
On our last day, counting heads to make sure we
didn’t forget anyone, the supervisors took their
seats in the front of the bus and exhaled as we
headed back to New York with visions of D.C. in
our minds.
Barcelone par Nathalie Roux ‘12
ARRIÈRE PLAN : Vue de la Méditerranée depuis
les hauteurs de Tarragone
Finalement, vendredi après-midi arriva et la
dernière heure sonna. Cette cloche, nous l’attendions
tous depuis longtemps.
Mein Austausch in
Deutschland durch Laure Waßen ‘
Während den « Thanksgiving » Ferien, fuhren die
Deutschlehrerin, Juliette Fillon, Romane Thomas,
Fine Art, Music, & Wine: Superb!
by Anne Kennedy, FASNY Parent
An evening of art, music, wine, and cheese: to most
FASNY parents, this sounds enticing. On September 24,
such an evening of culture was thought to be a fabulous
way to kick off FASNY fund raising in 2009–10.
ABOVE: After her performance, Harriet was kind enough to sign programs for guests.
AT RIGHT: Harriet Langley, accompanied by Tatiana Goncharova.
the evening, showcased Harriet’s great dexterity and
command of her instrument. It had the audience up on
their feet, giving thunderous applause amid gasps of
awe. It was breathtakingly beautiful.
Internationally renowned violinist and FASNY alumna
Harriet Langley returned to Westchester to perform for
our community. Although Harriet lives in Belgium,
many parents, students, and faculty remember her well.
And, for others unaware of her talents, she certainly
came across as an exceptional surprise. In spite of her
young age—she is only in Grade 12—Harriet has an
impressive résumé: Among other accomplishments, at
the one-year anniversary of 9/11, she was invited to
perform with cellist Yo Yo Ma at Ground Zero.
At our concert, she captivated the audience with her
tenderness and depth of emotion. While she was
developing her talents during her years at FASNY,
Harriet’s maturity and mastery over the last four years is
remarkable. Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25, the final piece of
Adding to the event, a truly eclectic group of art was on
display for sale. Artists comprised of teachers, parents,
alumni parents, and grandparents offered a wide range
of art, including bronze and concrete sculptures,
collages, oil and watercolor paintings, ceramics, and
jewelry. Artists were selling their pieces throughout the
wine and cheese portion of the evening—sponsored
by AOC Fine Wines—that followed the concert. It was a
true testament to how many talented artists we have
within our community.
For those of us attending, we couldn’t imagine a more
convivial way to spend an evening: savoring art,
music, and wine amongst friends. Thank you to
Harriet, the artists, and AOC Fine Wines for participating
in this event.
fifth graders brought down the house. Along with iconic
songs from the best of Broadway—including “Fiddler
on the Roof,” “42nd Street,” “Mamma Mia!” and even
Weird Al Yankovic’s Eat It—there were extraordinary
musicians, gymnasts, and tap dancers. Highlights
included a medley from “Starmania” by the Larchmont
faculty and George Benson’s On Broadway performed
with several students from Grade 11.
The Larchmont faculty even took the stage.
A Winter Wonderland . . . Captured in a Holiday Card!
by Misha Silverman ‘96, Alumnus and Pre-School Art Teacher
In the winter, with blustery winds and frigid temperatures,
the thought of a representative winter scene
was the inspiration behind this year’s holiday card.
We used flesh-colored cutouts resembling gingerbread
men as a base and asked the children of Grade 1SA to
make a portrait of themselves. I provided them with
many materials to give themselves their own distinct
style—felt, fabric, burlap, sequins, gems, and wool.
Each student became really excited about making such
a fun portrait of him- or herself.
After attaching the portraits to the winter scene, our
holiday card was created! The students were able to take
the project to another level by illustrating their own
winter scenes and placing their portraits there. The end
result is rather unique and can be seen on our School’s
gallery at www.artsonia.com.
Santa Visits the Nursery
& Pre-K Holiday Concert
On December 16, the Nursery and Pre-K students
enhanced holiday spirit with rousing renditions of old
standards, including Noël en forêt, Holly Jolly Christmas,
and the Hanukkah Song. But it was the combination of
Jingle Bells and Vive le vent that drew Santa from the
North Pole, to make a special visit, bedecked with candy
canes for all.
et Tips of the Week.
N’ayez crainte. Nous y parviendrons.
Impact of Disaster—FASNY Students Unite for Haiti
On January 12, 2010, an
earthquake recorded at
7.0 on the Richter scale
struck Haiti. Immediately
thereafter, a collective
effort began—one that would span the globe—to
support those affected by the disaster. FASNY students, too,
quickly mobilized as all three campuses combined their
efforts to help a nation in need.
“At first, I didn’t believe it,” said Emily Kramer ’17, a Lower
School Student Council representative. “I was so upset to
hear about it. Then, I saw all the horrible images on the
news. It was terrifying to see everything destroyed.” Along
with Emily, Student Council members Yassmine Rohlf ’17,
David Sollod ’17, and President Zoé LaPomme ’17 met to
decide how the Lower School would support this effort.
Emily’s initial shock wasn’t uncommon. As FASNY students
saw the devastation, a compelling need to help spread
across campuses. Upper School Student Government
President Haythem Laaribi ’10—along with Lucas Noble-
Beeck ’10, Nina Legrand ’10, and Matthieu Charriaud ’10
—reached out to the Lower School in hopes to combine
efforts. They met in Larchmont to begin a dialogue on how
every FASNY student can help.
“I felt compelled to help because it’s not fair for Haiti…”
asserted Grade 3 Student Council President Cyprien Bône.
“We can’t just ignore a nation in need,” Emily added. “I think
it’s great we’re coming together as a school to help. We all
have great ideas to help and we should use them.”
FASNY in Action!
The Upper School hosted a month-long
bake sale where all profits support Haiti. In
the first week alone, students raised $2,322.
When plans are finalized, students across
all three campuses will bring in different
school supplies and clothing to donate to
those in need.
The Upper School held a Sports and Music
Night where students and faculty competed
on the basketball court to help Haiti and
sing along to their favorite hits during the
Rock Show.
Sometimes, getting a personal letter can
make all the difference in the world. Lower
School students are hoping to create a penpal
system with other students in Haiti.
FASNY has welcomed Haitian students to
the Upper School campus. An education is
the greatest contribution of all.
Green Club
Did you know that a banana peel decomposes in 2.5
weeks? A winter sock takes 1.5 years. What about a
plastic bag? 500 years! Thanks to a special presentation
given by Westchester County’s Department of Environmental
Facilities, our FASNY students know.
In an effort to be more environmentally conscious on
campus, the Green Club invited John Scaramuzzo and
Joan Caputo to the Upper School campus. In an active
discussion with students, they went over recycling
basics and some unknown facts. And the one thing
students and faculty took away was Mr. Scaramuzzo’s
adage: “Just because you throw it away doesn’t mean it
goes away.”
Soup’s On: FASNY’s Thanksgiving Soup Kitchen
Thanksgiving dinner for six or eight can be quite the task
in the kitchen. But can you imagine serving 200 people?
This Thanksgiving, FASNY Upper School students came
together for a second year to serve to more than 200
people a classic home-cooked Thanksgiving meal in the
Mamaroneck cafeteria.
Jessica Anderson, Elie Javice, Leah Varjacques, Eliane
Bejjani, and Jeremy Diamond organized the event, with
guidance from Middle School Principal Helaine Couty
and FASNY parents Didier Javice and Agnès Varjacques.
And with the help of Yuval Tresser from La Bonne Cuisine,
the students were able to navigate the kitchen.
“We’re hoping that this will become a tradition, one that
carries on in the years to come,” conveyed Jeremy. “We
put a lot of effort into this year’s soup kitchen and it
really paid off for everyone involved.”
Quand la microfinance s’invite à la FASNY . .
journée baptisée PoverUP Your World, réunissant
You Can Have an Impact
Students, you can join PoverUP’s Facebook
Group and form a FASNY microfinance club
with the help of the PoverUP Team
Parents, encourage your kids to get involved.
In the face of bitter winds and chilly temperatures,
FASNY fans came out in droves to support the
Sharks. The day began at noon with a scrimmage
between the seventh and eighth grade boys’ and
girls’ soccer teams. Ending in a shoot-out, the white
team took home the 1–0 win over the blue team.
MECOMING
But, the Lady Sharks wouldn’t rest, as they
made a valiant attempt to dominate the
game. Despite their efforts, Mamaroneck
pulled ahead with a 2– 0 win.
In the final match of the day, the JV boys’
team took on Keio Academy for a
90-minute grudge match. At the end of
the second half, the Sharks walked away
with 2–1 win, leaving FASNY soccer with
a winning record for the day.
Sports-woman-ship:
Girls Soccer
FASNY girls had a great 2009 season reported
Coach Thierry Leroy. “Everyone had fun.”
The Lady Sharks may not have won every
match, but athletics is more than just
winning. Being the true sportsmen they are,
each girl played with dignity and with heart,
progressing in each game, thanks to
dedicated coaching from Mr. Leroy. With the
fundamentals intact, the Sharks are sure to
be a force on the field in 2010.
JUST SHY OF PERFECTION: BOYS SOCCER
Aiming for a perfect season is a lofty goal for most athletic teams, but the Sharks were up for the
challenge, according to Head Coach Gilbert Ekotto.
“We had great team cohesion. They loved the sport. They loved the team. They were determined
to do well. It was the one thing I enjoyed most,” he confessed.
Another confession: game-time strategy. “We were playing Brunswick and they thought they
knew exactly how to beat us. I started everyone in different positions, feigning a weak team.”
Once Brunswick thought they had the tempo of the game figured out, Mr. Ekotto put in his power
players at their best positions. “I switched it,” he said. “We completely fooled them.”
However, losing the final game of the season—to the Lycée Français, no less—was
heartbreaking. “It was our toughest loss, but we did beat our rivals Keio Academy at Homecoming.”
Win, lose, or draw, one thing is for sure, Sharks soccer is always leading on the pitch.
GIVING
NEWS
| Executive
Director Bob Hallett of the E.E. Ford Foundation met with students and
faculty this fall to learn about FASNY.
la FASNY | Opening Doors: The Campaign for FASNY — You Can Help FASNY Grow
We are committed to maintaining our existing diversity
and to increasing the number of qualified local students
from economically diverse backgrounds. For this reason,
the Advancement Office applied for a grant last fall to
augment our financial aid budget. In November 2009,
FASNY learned that the Edward E. Ford Foundation had
pledged a grant to the School for $25,000 for this purpose.
Redeeming the grant is contingent on fulfilling a 2 for 1
match by our community by December 31, 2010, which
must be designated for financial aid endowment.
The Development Committee of the Board of Trustees has
determined that this is a good opportunity to vest fully
our existing financial aid fund, the Olivia Tucker Endowed
Scholarship Fund. The Campaign goal is $135,000 of
which the first $50,000 will satisfy the E. E. Ford match.
We hope to reach the goal by June 30, 2011.
The Trustees of the Ford Foundation require the donations
to be over and above annual fund gifts. In other words, if
you want to give a gift specifically for the match, please
increase your gift from last year (only the increase will be
counted), or if you have never given to the School before,
we will be able to count the donation toward the match.
For this reason, Fund for FASNY volunteers will be asking
you for both purposes this year and next, and we hope you
will be able to contribute to both. Although the purpose of
the grant designates the revenues for Grades 9 through
12, the message should resonate with all our families
because by allocating these funds to the High School, we
free up financial aid money for our two lower divisions,
thereby increasing opportunity throughout the School.
We will have succeeded in establishing FASNY as a
fixture in the community when we have enough
endowed funds to generate significant income so that
we can count on this investment. We hope you will join
others in our community to open doors of opportunity
for students who otherwise would not be able to take
advantage of a FASNY education.
Parents’ Fund | Senior Parents Launch 2010 Fund
Créé l’an
L’an dernier, le fonds a
The parents of FASNY Seniors kicked off this year’s Senior
Parents’ Fund on December 5, at the home of Simon
Noble and Patricia Beeck. Hosted by Senior Parents’ Fund
Chairs Simon, Patricia, and Dolores Corbalan, the evening
cocktail reception was an opportunity for parents to greet
each other, celebrate their children’s success in Terminale,
and hear updates from members of the administration.
Head of Upper School Joël Peinado spoke about this
year’s class, reflecting on their talents and camaraderie,
as well as providing some details about the School’s
second Commencement ceremony, to take place in June.
Eliza Huleatt, associate director of annual giving and
alumni relations, reminded parents about the Alumni
Office and the various ways that they can keep in touch
with FASNY after their students have graduated.
The evening was also an opportunity for parents to hear
about the second year of the Senior Parents’ Fund, a
special fund within the Fund for FASNY that is dedicated
to cultural exchanges and opportunities for Upper
School students. Launched last year in celebration of the
first-ever graduating class, the Senior Parents’ Fund
is a way to celebrate students’ accomplishments,
promote biculturalism and the cultural uniqueness of
FASNY, and to leave a legacy at the School after the
students have been graduated. In its inaugural year,
the Senior Parents’ Fund raised $26,505 from 91 percent
of the senior parents. This year’s class has set the same
goal of $25,000 and, as always, is aiming for 100
percent participation.
Head of School Bob Leonhardt closed the program by
reminding the parents that each class of FASNY seniors is
different, and that the Class of 2010 should be celebrated
for its diverse group of talented and motivated students.
Thanking the parents for all of their hard work, and
acknowledging the hard work of the faculty and staff
who coached their kids along the way, Mr. Leonhardt had
nothing but positive words to say about the students
who will be graduated from FASNY in June.
Le Fonds Annuel rebaptisé Fonds pour la FASNY |
Annual Fund Make-Over: Fund for FASNY
GIVING
NEWS
In a unanimous vote earlier this fall, the Annual Fund
co-chairs chose to re-name the Annual Fund as the
Fund for FASNY. The Fund for FASNY is the annual fund
raising effort at the School and is open to all members
of the community. Each year, parents, alumni, alumni
parents, faculty and staff, foundations, corporations,
and friends of the School contribute to the Fund for
FASNY. “The new name is not only more positive,”
explains Eliza Huleatt, associate director of annual
giving, “but it’s also more precise and explains exactly
where the donations are going—back to FASNY.”
Every penny raised by the Fund for FASNY goes back to
the students and the School. Keep an eye out for the
new Fund for FASNY name around campus, on emails,
and in appeals. It’s the same great cause, just a
different name!
AGENTS DE CLASSE |
CLASS AGENTS
Matthieu Charriaud, Pauline Chéry, and Morgane le
Beguet-Full were elected in the spring of 2009 to serve
as Class Agents for the Class of 2010. They will keep their
classmates connected to FASNY as they all move on to
different universities around the world, and they will
work with the Alumni Relations Office to update contact
information, collect class notes, and secure pledges for
the Fund for FASNY.
This spring, the Class Agents will dive into their new
roles by helping to plan the Commencement ceremony,
organizing care packages to send to alumni from
the Class of 2009, planning a Class Gift with their
fellow Terminale classmates, and planning a program
for the Commencement luncheon. The Alumni Office
congratulates Matthieu, Pauline, and Morgane on their
election and wishes to extend a huge MERCI! for all
of their help.
Rubrique Jeunes diplômés : la vie universitaire
Claire Champigny Alex Durand Soraya Hajjaji
What has been the most rewarding aspect of
college life?
“Everything is rewarding. Meeting so many new people
is enriching and inspiring, and they’re coming from all
around the world with common goals: changing the
world, getting that dream job, living independently. The
change of scenery is equally wonderful. Even though
Montréal is a vibrant city much like New York City, it’s still
so different; the friendliness and French culture make
Montréal so distinctive. Plus, there are thousands of
classes available that are overwhelmingly great. It’s
amazing to have the opportunity to study topics outside
your field and still be able to work so hard for your major.”
Do you have any advice for FASNY’s future
college freshmen?
“Work as hard as you can to get into the college of your
dreams, and get a good grade on the Bac. Even though
American colleges don’t require it, you’ll regret it if you
haven’t done your best. Take pride in your own work.
And once you’re in college, you’ll forget about all the
trouble you went through to get to where you are—it’s
all worth it!”
a apporté d’enrichissant ?
Following Up with FASNY’s New Alumni
Flaam Hardy Stéphanie Roux Quentin Voquer
What has been the most rewarding aspect of
college life?
“Definitely being able to study what really interests
me. It’s also great to have the freedom to do whatever
I want.”
Have you kept in touch with your fellow graduates?
“A few have come to visit me at McGill, which was a lot
of fun! I went home to New York for the break where I
saw quite a few people, and I’ve also kept in touch with
teachers through email.”
Do you have any advice for FASNY’s future
college freshmen?
“Although it may not always seem like it, there is a
whole other world after the Bac. You just need to work
hard until then, and prepare yourself mentally for the
awesome college life that awaits, which does include
things other than partying. Even if you don’t end up in
your top choice, these will be the best years of your life.”
What has been the most difficult aspect of
college life so far?
“I wouldn’t call college life difficult, but there were some
personal skills I clearly needed to improve, especially
budget-handling. I wasn’t good at counting money
before, but it got worse when I had to anticipate phone
bills. And, if there’s one thing I particularly dislike, it’s
owing money—to my parents in this case.”
Do you have any advice for FASNY’s future
college freshmen?
“Make the most of it. College goes beyond studies;
we build ourselves academically, but we also build
ourselves as adults. The quality of the college experience
doesn’t necessarily correlate with the tier of the school.
I was disappointed at first when I was in Bishop’s,
looking at others being in more prestigious schools. It
took me time to realize it isn’t ‘the better the college,
the better the college experience;’ you make your own
college experience whether you’re at McGill, Yale, or
Ohio State University. It won’t change the fact you’ll be
successful and meet incredible people—if you want to.”
Tatiana Thieme—Tatiana writes, “I am a PhD candidate at the University of
Cambridge doing research on market-based approaches to poverty alleviation. This
follows three to four years of consulting work as a business anthropologist, where I
was involved in the front-end of sustainable business development in low-income
markets to help corporations better understand the local context in which they
wanted to operate (these are usually very different community and commercial
structures, often in the so-called ‘informal’ economy). So my fieldwork takes place in
the urban low-income settlements of Nairobi, especially Mathare which is one of the
largest ‘slums’ in East Africa. I focus especially on the role of youth and income
generating approaches to community waste management (both solid and human
waste, but more bluntly, garbage collection and shared & public toilet cleaning). I am
also looking at the broader politics of sanitation in the city of Nairobi, as a lens into
some of the challenges and issues facing urbanization in industrializing cities in
developing countries.”
Ms. Josette Banzet : Playing the Role of Grandparent at FASNY
but non lucratif, Mme Banzet manifeste clairement sa
2008. « Ma mère m’a donné l’envie de donner. J’ai été
chanceuse. Danielle fut chanceuse tout comme Simone
l’est aujourd’hui. Donner en retour est comme une
seconde nature. »
At a very early age, Josette Banzet learned from her
mother the satisfaction of giving. Every Thursday, her
French school in Morocco was closed, and on that day,
she and her ten siblings would knit sweaters and socks
ABOVE : Ms. Josette Banzet and her granddaughter Simone Spandau ‘19
for orphans. On Saturday afternoons, her mother would
take the children to hospitals to volunteer. “My mother
was an angel, and this is where it comes from.”
Born in France in Champagne country, Ms. Banzet
moved to Morocco at 18 months old, where she attended
a very strict French school. “I like the discipline at FASNY.
My granddaughter, Simone (a third grader), is receiving
a great, great education. I see a lot of similarities between
the education I received and what Simone is doing.”
Ms. Banzet grew up speaking Arabic as well as French,
and she was very involved in theater. She performed all
the French classics, such as Racine and Molière, and
sang and danced in community group theater. After
sitting for the brevet at Collège des Orangers in Rabat,
at age 15, Ms. Banzet moved to New York City to study
theater with Stella Adler, acclaimed acting teacher
of such well-knowns as De Niro, Brando, and Streep.
Ms. Adler had seen Ms. Banzet’s work in Morocco and
offered her an intense two years of classical study,
including Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, and Arthur
Miller. She characterizes Ms. Adler as “just like my
mother; she supported me and believed in me.”
Not long after, Ms. Banzet moved to Hollywood, signing
a contract with 20th Century Fox, played a few
small roles, but left the studio to freelance and do
television work. In 1977, she
won a Golden Globe for her
performance as the French
teacher in the 1976 miniseries
“Rich Man, Poor Man”
starring Nick Nolte and Peter
Strauss. She used her French school background
to set the tone for the role, “I was very strict and
very demanding!”
Ms. Banzet felt that her privacy and raising a family
were very important. Her daughter, FASNY parent
Danielle Spandau, attended the Lycée in Los Angeles
while her mother balanced career and family-life. In
1981, Ms. Banzet married Tommy Roe, 1960s rock and
roll star, whose hits include Sheila, Dizzy, and Sweet
Pea. Years later, after a comeback tour, Mr. Roe decided
to join her in L.A. and settle down. They make their
home in Beverly Hills, and, of course, for fun, they go
to the movies.
Ms. Banzet insists, “For all grandparents, it is such a joy
to help their grandchildren and to support their schools.”
FASNY has left quite an impression on her; she loves
My mother instilled giving in me.
I was lucky . . .
that Simone is at FASNY, and she feels that other
children should have the same chance. As a philanthropist
in Hollywood serving on several non-profit
boards, Ms. Banzet says she does what she can to give
back and supporting FASNY gives her great joy. She
would like to see all grandparents involved and to feel
the sense of pride she feels for Simone and the school
she attends. “I wish I lived closer to FASNY. I would give
my time as well as my financial support.” True to her
word, Ms. Banzet volunteered as the Mistress of
Ceremonies at the 2008 FASNY Gala. “My mother
instilled giving in me. I was lucky; Danielle was lucky,
and so is Simone. Giving back is second nature.”
