NOUVEAU LUXE
Born in Paris in 1973 while her parents lived there briefly, Phoebe
Philo was raised in London’s Notting Hill neighborhood. Her father is
well-known in the real estate industry and her mother is an artistic director
– she worked for David Bowie in the 70’s. We can cross paths with this
chic young lady on weekends in Sussex where her parents own a property.
She often goes for long outings there on her horse, Toby.
The designer, with her very English background, had her first decisive,
professional encounter at her fashion college, Central Saint Martins. There
she crossed paths and became friends with Stella McCartney and followed
her to Chloé at the end of her studies. When she presented her refreshing
new recruit to me, Stella had these words “This is Phoebe, my assistant.
She is even more ‘posh’ than me!”…
When Stella left Chloe in 2001 to launch her own label under the auspices
of the Gucci Group, Phoebe – who was expected to go with her – didn’t
let the chance get away and took her place. After five years of success designing
trendy fashion, launching a lower-priced line – See by Chloé – and
an accessory collection that was a hit with fashionistas, Phoebe left Chloé
in 2006. This was almost on a whim, she wanted to dedicate more time to
her family. Not devoid of ambition, she kept her eyes on the industry. After
being hired by LVMH as Céline’s artistic director in October 2008, she
came back at 35 with full power and a strong battle plan: stop everything,
globalize the brand, clean up the boutiques and present no fashion show
for one season. While imposing this revolution, she moved the company’s
fashion office to Cavendish Square in London where she lives, breathes
and enriches her creative vocabulary.
Calm, serene and sure of herself, Phoebe does not address ‘party girls’
but instead women whom she sees as being more interested in style than
in fashion. An ideal viewpoint for our current times that also corresponds
to her own career path. The crisp linens, clean leathers and powdery colors
of her pared down creations continue drawing new fans to Céline.
