Un deuxième champ d’application important est la reconstitution de la variabilité climatique à long terme et des tendances climatiques à partir de la largeur des anneaux de croissance et de la série des isotopes stables. Étant donné que les données climatiques instrumentales sont rares ou de brève durée pour les vastes régions d’Afrique, la plage de variabilité naturelle du climat est peu comprise et on ne connaît donc pas la plage de tolérance des espèces d’arbres aux extrêmes climatiques. Des résultats précédents provenant d’Éthiopie montrent des signaux climatiques forts au niveau des anneaux de croissance et de la série d’isotopes de carbone stables (Gebrekirstos, 2009 ; Gebrekirstos et al., 2008, 2009, 2010). Le projet en cours dans la forêt de Munessa, en Éthiopie, peut générer des chronologies de plus de 350 ans, à partir de l’odocarpus procera. Les résultats de mesures pilotes de la région du Sahel sont encourageants. Des chronologies d’anneaux de croissance portant sur plus de 100 ans sont en cours d’élaboration pour le Burkina Faso et la Tanzanie. Ces résultats peuvent aider à l’identification et à l’interprétation d’événements environnementaux et climatologiques extrêmes et fournir des informations sur les manières dont les sociétés et les écosystèmes y réagissent pour les périodes où les enregistrements météorologiques ne sont pas disponibles (Gebrekirstos, 2009). Ceci peut également constituer une importante contribution de l’Afrique aux futurs rapports du groupe d’experts sur l’évolution du climat. Enfin, les séries des anneaux de croissance développées dans les trois projets seront combinées pour établir des traits de corrélation à grande échelle entre la croissance des arbres et les températures à la surface des océans, en vue d’examiner les téléconnexions climatiques à l’échelle du continent et les variations des configurations de circulation atmosphérique. Pour ce faire, il est nécessaire d’étendre ce travail à d’autres essences importantes et à d’autres régions d’Afrique. En outre, ces chronologies régionales seront combinées aux séries sur les anneaux de croissance entourant les océans tropicaux, établies par des partenaires au projet dans d’autres régions – le Moyen-Orient : l’Iran (Pourtahmasi et al., 2007) et l’Asie du Sud : le Népal (Bräuning, 2004) et le Plateau tibétain (Bräuning et Mantwill, 2004 ; Bräuning, 2006). Des séries supplémentaires sur les anneaux de croissance provenant de l’Amérique du Sud tropical (l’Équateur) ont été établies (Bräuning et al., 2009). Somme toute, ce réseau des anneaux de croissance entoure l’Océan Indien et le Pacifique oriental tropical et peut donc être utilisé pour établir des traits de corrélation à grande échelle, entre la croissance des arbres et les températures à la surface des océans et pour analyser les processus mondiaux autour des tropiques.
