C’est en prenant le train en direction d’Orléans que Raphaël Zarka et Vincent Lamouroux ont découvert,
par hasard, la voie de l’Aérotrain. Ils ne connaissaient pas plus l’ingénieur Bertin son inventeur.
Comme il s’agissait d’un rail, d’un projet abandonné ; ils ont inventé le véhicule qui pouvait avoir circulé
dessus. “Plus j’y réfléchis et moins j’accorde d’importance au Pentacycle comme objet de performance.
Il est pour moi le condensé de nos observations, c’est en quelque sorte un instrument de
connaissance non scientifique, je veux dire par là qu’il a “enregistré” les caractères physiques et imaginaires
de la structure de l’Aérotrain. En pointant du doigt certaines ambiguïtés propres à ce site,
il révèle des problèmes d’espace, de formes et surtout - me semble-t-il - de temporalité.” RZ

It was when taking the train for Orleans that Raphaël Zarka and Vincent Lamouroux discovered, by
chance, the Aérotrain track. They didn't know its inventor, the engineer Bertin, either. Or that it is
was a railway, an abandoned project; they invented the vehicle that might have circulated upon it.
“The more I think about it, the less importance I give to the Pentacycle as a performance object. For
me, it is a concentration of our observations, a sort of non-scientific learning instrument in a way.
What I mean is that it“recorded”the physical and imaginary characteristics of the Aérotrain structure. By
pointing out certain ambiguities specific to the site, it reveals the problems of space, of forms and
above all - I think – of temporality”. RZ

The Smithsons 2005, 4 mn
Un enchaînement de plans fixes des rives du New Jersey, filmé depuis Manhattan, du sud au nord de
l’île. Ce film est un hommage à l’artiste américain Robert Smithson, qui il y a plus de trente ans parlait
de sa fascination pour le chaos architectural qui régnait alors à New Jersey. Après sa mort, dans les
années 70 et 80 des immeubles de trente étages ont été construits, sans aucune planification. Des
immeubles qui rappellent les grands ensembles français, aujourd’hui victimes de l’entropie, autant de
sites qui auraient intéressé Robert Smithson, mort trop jeune pour connaître ce “pique d’entropie”. CG
A series of still shots from the banks of New Jersey, filmed from Manhattan, from the South to the
North of the island. This film is a tribute to the American artist Robert Smithson, who over thirty
years ago talked of his fascination for the architectural chaos which ruled in New Jersey. In the 70's
and 80's, after his death, buildings of thirty floors were built, without any planning. Buildings which
were reminiscent of the great French urban masses, now victim to entropy, which would have interested
Robert Smithson who died too young to know this "height of entropy". CG
