En cela, l’héroïne change d’apparences en utilisant un simple morceau de tissu.
This piece deals with issues of racial stereotyping since September 11 2001. In this the
protagonist is transformed in various guises by using a simple piece of cloth.
Ane Lan
The Carpentrial Son 2002, 3 mn 42
Vêtu tel la vierge Marie, l’artiste Ane Lan porte plusieurs vieux outils de charpentier
ainsi qu’un vieux symbole chrétien : le Sacré-Cœur de Jésus. À la fin, le
protagoniste prépare un dispositif électrique pour la réalisation d’une bombe
artisanale, suivi par l’apparition graduelle du drapeau palestinien. Cette vidéo a
été réalisée spécialement pour l’exposition Addition qui s’est tenue au sein de
l’Église Sainte Madeleine à Londres, après l’échec des négociations de paix dans
le conflit israélo-palestinien, en 2002.
Dressed as Virgin Mary like figure, the artist Ane Lan is holding various old
carpenter tools and the old Christian Sacred Heart of Jesus Symbol. In the
end he is preparing the electrical device for a home-made bomb/explosive,
followed by the fading in of the Palestinian flag.The video was made for the
site specific exhibition Addition in Saint Magdalene church in London after
the breakdown of the peace negotiations in the Israel-Palestinian conflict in 2002.

Je voulais savoir ce qui arriverait si j’introduisais un très simple
obstacle à un acte du quotidien. J’ai essayé plusieurs choses ; en
me couvrant la tête d’un bas de femme tout en mangeant, j’ai
réalisé que je pouvais effectivement exprimer les idées avec lesquelles
je m’étais amusé. Dans le film, je fais de mon mieux pour
atteindre cela, sans pour autant m’écarter des règles fixées au
préalable. La meilleure attitude à adopter pour la performance était
la discipline et la rigueur pour contraster avec la stupidité et l’enfantillage
exprimés en me barbouillant le visage avec une banane. TS
I wanted to see what happened when I introduced a very simple
obstruction on an every day act. I tried different things and found
that by putting a lady stocking over my head whilst trying to eat I
could effectively express the ideas I had played with. In the film I am
actually trying my best to achieve this still without deviating from my set
rules. I also found that the mood that best suited the performance
was an attitude of dicipline and rigour to contrast the stupidity and
childishness of smearing banana all over my face. TS
