Tehran Studies U.S. Proposal to Open an Office

TEHRAN - Iran is studying a U.S.
proposal to base an American official in
Tehran, an Iranian newspaper reported
,Sunday.

,Iran's minister of Islamic culture and
guidance, was quoted as saying by the

The minister did not say what role the
U.S. official would have, but a report in
The New York Times on Thursday said
the United States bad offered to appoint
an official from the U.S. Information
Agency to be stationed in Tehran.
The Swiss Embassy handles all U.S.
diplomatic correspondence with Iran.
The United States and Iran cut diplomatic
ties after Iranian militants
stormed the U.S. Embassy in 1979 and
took its diplomats hostage. They were
held for 444 days.
In Paris on Friday, Mr. Mohajerani
said Mr. Cliilton's recent message to the
Iranian people, congratulating them on
their New Year, which followed a call
by President Mohammed Khatami for
opening "cracks in the wall of mistrust,"
were positive signs in the Iran-
U.S. relationship, the newspaper said.

France is investigating an Iranian
complaint about security at a reception
on United Nations property in Paris
where demonstrators attacked an Iranian
minister, the Foreign Ministry said
Sunday, Reuters reported from Paris.
The ministry said the French police
were not responsible for security at the
event Friday at the headquarters of the
United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization. The target of
the attack was Mr. Mohajerani.
"We are looking into the protest and
hope to reply,as soon as possible early
next week," a ministry spokesman said.
The Unesco building, he said, was
covered by special international conventions
and handled its own security.
The official Iranian press agency,
IRNA, reported Sunday that Mr. Mohajerani
was assaulted by members of
Iran's opposition Mujahidin Khalq organization.
It added that the minister
had not been harmed.

Trois nouvelles arrestations
de dirigeants d'un parti pro-kurde

ANKARA, 30 mars (AFP) - Trois dirigeants du Parti de la Démocratie du Peuple (Hadep,
pro-kurde) ont été interpellés mardi matin par la police à Ankara, dans le cadre d'une procédure
judiciaire engagée contre la plupart des dirigeants de ce parti, a rapporté l'agence Anatolie.
Sirri Sakik et Sedat Yurttas, deux anciens députés, et Feridun Yazar, l'un des avocats du parti, ont
été arrêtés par la police anti-terroriste et seraient passibles de plus de 22 ans de prison en cas
d'inculpation par la Cour de sûreté de l'Etat d'Ankara (DGM), selon cette source.
Ahmet Turk et Abdullah Varli, deux autres dirigeants du parti, avaient été arrêtés, puis libérés, la
semaine dernière, dans le cadre de la même enquête.
Sept dirigeants du Hadep, dont son président Murat Bozlak, avaient été inculpés il y a deux
semaines sous l'accusation d'être la branche politique du Parti des Travailleurs du Kurdistan (PKK,
séparatiste).
Les dirigeants du Hadep sont accusés "d'avoir agi et tenu des propos en faveur du PKK",ce qui les
rend passibles d'au moins 22 ans de prison, selon l'article 125 du code pénal turc.
Le PKK est en rébellion armée contre Ankara pour créer un Etat kurde indépendant dans le sud-est
de la Turquie.
Le Hadep avait obtenu quelque 4,5% des voix aux dernières élections législatives en décembre 1995,
mais n'avait pu être représenté au parlement, faute d'avoir atteint la barre des 10% des voix à
l'échelon national requis par la loi électorale.
Le Hadep avait succédé au Parti de la Démocratie (Dep), dissous en 1994pour activités séparatistes.
Quatre anciens députés du Dep purgent actuellement des peines de 15 ans de prison pour
"appartenance" au PKK, dont Mme Leyla Zana, à qui le parlement européen avait décerné en 1996
son prix Sakharov pour la liberté d'expression.
