of an illegal organization.<br />

Ahm<strong>et</strong> Turk was released because he said in the interrogation that he had not been to party<br />

offices for eight months and did not know anything about HADEP's education project and<br />

because he was sick.<br />

Ankara's chief prosecutor or<strong>de</strong>red a search of HADEP's headquarters and offices in the ~<br />

framework of the investigation into HADEP's 1998 calendar, a publication regar<strong>de</strong>d as Z<br />

containing illegal elements. Raids of party offices have uncovered some illegal documents that £<br />

have been seized. Following the seizure of those documents, Chief Prosecutor Salk or<strong>de</strong>red 51 8<br />

partyadministrators be <strong>de</strong>tained, with seven of them, including Chairman Murat Bozlak, ..c:<br />

actually taken into custody. Chief Prosecutor Salk filed charges against the seven party :Q<br />

administrators for being lea<strong>de</strong>rs of an illegal armed organization's political wing and ~<br />

<strong>de</strong>man<strong>de</strong>d prison sentences of at least 22 years and six months for each <strong>de</strong>fendant.<br />

MED TV fails to open an office<br />

MED TV failed to open a studio in Sittard, the N<strong>et</strong>herlands, a city which is close to Belgium<br />

and Germany.<br />

Local officials from Sittard said that the film production company Ra}, which is registered in<br />

Den<strong>de</strong>rleeuw, Belgium, had appealed to them to rent a large space in an old factory building,<br />

the Anatolia news agency reported.<br />

After being informed that Ra} was working for MED TV, Sittard officials refused to allow them<br />

to rent the space.<br />

MED TV is a television station which propagates the i<strong>de</strong>ology of the outlawed Kurdistan<br />

Workers' Party (PKK), and has studios in London and offices in Belgium.<br />

Turkey has informed these two countries on a number of occasions that MED TV is a pro-PKK<br />

institution.<br />

ANKARA.Après <strong>de</strong> vives tensions, la puissante armée turque <strong>et</strong> le<br />

gouvernement se sont mis d'accord, vendredi 27 mars à Ankara, lors<br />

d'une réunion du Conseil national <strong>de</strong> Sécurité, sur un programme <strong>de</strong><br />

lutte contre le fondamentalisme musulman, priorité <strong>de</strong>s militaires,<br />

mais qui respecte les règles <strong>de</strong> la démocratie comme le souhaitaient<br />

les politiques. «Dans la lutte contre res mouvements religieux réactionnaires<br />

qui visent à abattre le régime laie, les lois existantes doivent <strong>et</strong>re<br />

appliquées sans concession <strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong> nouvelles lois doivent être rapi<strong>de</strong>ment<br />

adoptées par le Parlement », a déclaré, dans un communiqué, le<br />

Conseil national <strong>de</strong> sécurité qui réunit chaque mois le chef <strong>de</strong> l'Etat, le<br />

premier ministre, les ministres <strong>de</strong> la défense, <strong>de</strong> l'intérieur <strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong>s affaires<br />

étrangères ainsi que les cinq plus hauts commandants <strong>de</strong>s armées.<br />

C<strong>et</strong>te réunion m<strong>et</strong> fin aux tensions survenues ily a une semaine<br />

lorsque le premier ministre Mesut Yilmazavait appelé les militaires à<br />

« s'occuper <strong>de</strong> leurs affaires» <strong>et</strong> à laisse!;'au gouvernement le soin <strong>de</strong><br />

combattre le fondamentalisme musulman, s'attirant en r<strong>et</strong>our un sévère<br />
