.Iran and Greece accused of aiding PKK
. h D'I N Turkish Daily News Electronic Edition. Foreign Affairs Section
Ankara - Tur k
IS al yews March 27 1998 _
Iran and Greece have recently enhanced cooperation in their efforts to support the outlawed separatist
Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), intelligence sources said.
Since last January, the twO"countries have expanded their support of the PKK by providing military training,
the sources said.
Previously, it had been reported that PKK terrorists trained in Greece had been flown to Tehran, from which
. point they had infiltrated Turkey and Iraq.
But the latest intelligence reports say that Greek support and involvement have increased with military
officers training PKK terrorists in the 11 PKK camps in Iran.
Three Greek officers, based in the Razayi camp which is the second largest PKK camp in Iran, are providing
the Kurdish separatists with military training, including in the use of heavy artillery which Greece sells to
the Iranian army under a bilateral agreement, the sources said.
The sources added that the Greek officers had arrived in Tehran from Athens, and after having talks with
.Iranian intelligence and military officials, had headed to the PKK camps.
PKK informants had revealed that four Greek officers had been training PKK terrorists in northern Iraq. On
March 13, 1998, the four officers had reportedly moved from the Chemirezan camp to an area in the Sakran
Mountains with 180 PKK members and military equipment.
The same intelligence sources said that Greece had been providing special training for a group of PKK
terrorists on a farm in the town of Psakhna on the Evoia Peninsula in Greece.
Turkey has repeatedly condemned Greece for supporting the PKK and for turning a blind eye to a number of
PKK camps on its territory. Athens denies the accusations, dismissing them as mere propaganda. However,
an article in the latest issue of Time magazine has provided detailed information supporting Turkey's
claims.
PKK target of Syrians' antipathy
Meanwhile, the monument to the PKK leader, Abdullah Ocalan, in Syria's Berkefire district, has become the
target of local people's anger, intelligence sources said.
The monument, which was erected there last February, was pelted with stones by the citizens of Berkefire.
The Syrian authorities had to surround the monument with barbed wire, but this measure failed to halt the
attacks. The Syrian government has reportedly decided to dismantle the monument very soon.
Ocalan himself has been granted safe haven in Damascus, where he has been living for years.
