The victim's mother, Fadime Goktepe, also expressed disapproval. Following the verdict, a number of
journalists who had been covering the case since the beginning marched to Afyon's Victory Square to
protest the decision. The former editor of a now-banned newspaper, Isik Yurtcu, said that journalists are
also human beings with the right to life and the right to seek information. Yurtcu was released from jaillast
year with a 16-year suspended sentence following pressure by international press organizations.
International observers were more optimistic. This trial is seen as a test of the government's promise to
crack down on torture and abuses by the security forces, the Associated Press reported. Earlier, U.S. Assistant
Secretary of State John Shattuck who recently visited Turkey, said that his government attributed great
importance to the result of the Goktepe trial in proving whether or not Turkey is sincereabout taking
positive steps to prevent human rights abuses. Another case, to which Shattuck attributed the same
importance, was one involving the alleged torture by police officers of a group of youths responsible for
writing leftist graffiti on walls in the province of Manisa. That court acquitted the officers last week for lack
of evidence,
The verdict is open for appeal; if the Court of Appeals upholds the niling, the sentences stand. So far, none 2)
of the defendants' attorneys have said they will appeal, but the victim's lawyers are already saying that they ...c
will appeal to show their dissatisfaction with the verdict. They believe the police officers received minimal ~
sentences and that they will be set free prior to serving their entire sentences. ~ E-<
In a separate trial, an additional 37 police officers involved in the roundup at the funeral face charges of
using excessive force. They face up to three years each in jail if convicted.
Ankara - Turkish Daily News
The new program of the Ankara Police Department, which requires police forces who are involved in
stressful job-related activities to listen to classical music, has received support from the Presidential
Symphonic Orchestra (CSO) and the Turkish Philharmonic Association (TFD).
CSO Chairman Nedim Tanrikulu emphasized the positive effects of classical music on people, and stated
that they were willing to maintain support for the Ankàra Police Department's program. "Our doors are
open to the police, who maintain our security," said Tanrikulu.
Drawing attention to the significant .influence of classical music on the nervous system, Tanrikulu said:
"Due it's multi-vocal nature, dassical music teaches people to be tolerant to different voices. It makes people
think, it makes people feel closer to other humans and nature. It is full of love."
Indicating that, contrary to general thinking, classical music was not the musical taste of a specific class, and
no education was required in order to understand H, Tanrikulu stated, adding, "Music, as in all the other art
forms, is universa1." .
Moreover, the TFD, most of whose members are from the CSO as well, stated that they would give support
to the new scheme by preparing special tapes, mainly of Beethoven and Mozart, and organizing activities for
the Polin' Department.
Pieces from Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Bach and Turkish classical composers such as Ulvi
Cemal Erkin and Ferit Tuzun will be recorded on the tapes, which will be prepared for the police.
The Ankara Police Department Special Forces Office has received 150tickets from the CSO for the weekly
concert on Saturday morning. The police, who will get rid of job-related stress at the CSO concerts, will
listen a program composed of works by Verdi, Gries and Prokofieff.
