Ankara - Turkish Daily News Syria is said to have been oppressing its Kurdish minority for the last two years by forcing them to join the outlawed Kurdish organization that launches separatist attacks against Turkey. The outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK),which has been fighting since 1984 against Turkish security forces for an independent country in Turkey's Southeast, supports the Baath-regime's repressive policies against the Syrian Kurds. The group's leader, Abdullah Ocalan allegedly supports this policy as part of a compromise with Syrian authorities who allow him to reside in Damascus, according to intelligence sources. There are currently 450,000 ethnic Kurds in Syria. Damascus has been depriving its Kurdish youth of a university education and encouraging them to join the PKK. Also, Kurdish families are targeted by the Syrian government which forces them to send one out of every two sons to join the PKK.Syrian authorities are currently trying to persuade ethnic Kurdish families to have no more than three children in an attempt to lower their population. Moreover, Syrian authorities have thwarted any chance at prosperity for Kurdish businessmen by imposing restrictions on their businesses. They also try to contain the Kurdish population in rural areas, preventing them from migrating to larger urban areas. The Syrian militaryalso prevents Kurdish officers, who are few in number, from being promoted to significant posts. Plans to hold such events are said to have been engineered by the Gree~ chairman of the Kurdistan Solidarity Committee in southern Cyprus, Lazaros Mavros, and a senior member of the ruling party in Greece, Michalis Haralambidis. They also reportedly received help from the official Greek intelligence organization and the representatives of the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) which has been fighting against Turkey for independence. 'Repression continues in Western Thrace' The same sources also underlined another issue in Greece, saying that the alleged repression by the Greek government against its 150,000 ethnic Turks continued. A majority of the ethnic Turks live in Western Thrace, an area that consists of three provinces north of Greece. According to the sources, among the repressive polices are the exclusion of most the Turkish minority from higher education rights, the continuous seizure of Turks' assets by the government, and restrictions on their religious rights. The visit comes just after the secretary-general made several pu~lic statements in the last week supportmg the view of some Security Council members that in a resolution last week endorsing Mr. Annan's Baghdad mission the United States did not, as the Clinton administration insists, win the right to use force automatically against Iraq.
