Les troupes turques ont tué 40 séparatistes<br />

Kur<strong>de</strong>s, affirme l'agence officielle<br />

ANKARA, 9 mars (AFP) - L'agence semi-officielle turque Anatolie a affirmé lundi que les troupes<br />

turques, qui ont lancé une nouvelle campagne dans le sud-est du pays contre les séparatistes<br />

Kur<strong>de</strong>s, avaient tué ces trois <strong>de</strong>rniers jours 40 d'entre eux.<br />

Les combats entre l'armée turque <strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong>s combattants du parti <strong>de</strong>s Travailleurs du Kurdistan (PKK,<br />

interdit), les plus importants <strong>de</strong>puis l'automne, ont eu lieu dans une zone montagneuse <strong>de</strong> la<br />

province <strong>de</strong> Bingoi, selon l'agence.<br />

L'agence ignorait lundi si les combat~ avaient fait <strong>de</strong>s victimt'" du côt~ turc.<br />

Vendredi, <strong>de</strong>s responsables <strong>de</strong>s forces <strong>de</strong> sécurité avaient affirmé que celles-ci avaient tué sept<br />

membres du PKK dans la province <strong>de</strong> Diyarbakir.<br />

L'armée turque estime que le PKK a perdu peu à peu l'initiative militaire ces trois <strong>de</strong>rnières<br />

années dans la région en raison <strong>de</strong>s opérations intensives menées au Kurdistan turc mais aussi<br />

dans les régions kur<strong>de</strong>s du nord <strong>de</strong> l'Irak.<br />

Le dirigeant du PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, a reconnu le mois <strong>de</strong>rnier que le PKK avait ralenti le<br />

rythme <strong>de</strong> ses attaques <strong>de</strong>puis quelques mois en raison <strong>de</strong> l'hiver, mais averti que celles-ci<br />

reprendraient au printemps.<br />

Plus <strong>de</strong> 29.000personnes, y compris <strong>de</strong>s combattants <strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong>ux côtés <strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong>s civils, ont été tués <strong>de</strong>puis<br />

le début <strong>de</strong>s affrontement en 1984dans le sud-est <strong>de</strong> la Turquie, où le PKK lutte pour un Kurdistan<br />

indépt'nciant.<br />

Syria is said to have been oppressing its Kurdish<br />

minority for the last two years by forcing them to join<br />

the outlawed Kurdish organization that launches<br />

separatist attacks against Turkey.<br />

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK),which<br />

has been fighting since 1984 against Turkish security<br />

forces for an in<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nt country in Turkey's<br />

Southeast, supports the Baath-regime's repressive<br />

policies against the Syrian Kurds. The group's lea<strong>de</strong>r,<br />

Abdullah Ocalan allegedly supports this policy as<br />

part of a compromise with Syrian authorities who<br />

allow him to resi<strong>de</strong> in Damascus, according to intelligence<br />

sources.<br />

There are currently 450,000 <strong>et</strong>hnic Kurds in Syria.<br />

Damascus has been <strong>de</strong>priving its Kurdish youth of a<br />

university education and encouraging them to join<br />

the PKK. Also, Kurdish families are targ<strong>et</strong>ed by the<br />

Syrian government which forces them to send one<br />

out of every two sons to join the PKK.Syrian authorities<br />

are currently trying to persua<strong>de</strong> <strong>et</strong>hnic Kurdish<br />

families to have no more than three children in an<br />

attempt to lower their population.<br />

Moreover, Syrian authorities have thwarted any<br />

chance at prosperity for Kurdish businessmen by<br />

imposing restrictions on their businesses. They also<br />

try to contain the Kurdish population in rural areas,<br />

preventing them from migrating to larger urban<br />

areas.<br />

The Syrian militaryalso prevents Kurdish officers,<br />

who are few in number, from being promoted to<br />

significant posts.<br />

the near future to gather the mothers of the separatist<br />

Kurdish organization members who were killed<br />

during clashes with Turkish security forces.<br />
