C<strong>et</strong>te photographe <strong>de</strong>ragence Magnum, qui asurtout couvert l'Amérique centrale, s'intéresse au Kurdistan <strong>de</strong>puis1991 euple sans Etat, les Kur<strong>de</strong>s doivent sans doute à leurs montagnes d'avoir pu préserver leur i<strong>de</strong>ntité, leur culture <strong>et</strong> leur langue. Ils seraient aujourd'hui environ 12 millions en Turquie, 7 millions en Iran <strong>et</strong> 4 millions en Irak. Des communautés moins importantes sont également établies en Syrie <strong>et</strong> dans l'ex- URSS. Les premiers textes qui leur ont été .consacrés ont été écrits par <strong>de</strong>s historiens arabes <strong>et</strong> persans. L'Europe, elle, les découvre au XIX e siècle, à travers les comptes rendus <strong>de</strong>s premières expéditions scientifiques ou missionnaires. La plupart <strong>de</strong>s auteurs témoignent <strong>de</strong> la fierté d'un peuple qui souffre <strong>de</strong> sa dépendance à l'égard du ~ pacha <strong>de</strong> Bagdad. Ils soulignent également l'importance <strong>de</strong> l'esprit <strong>de</strong> famille <strong>et</strong> du cIano Les récits <strong>de</strong> c<strong>et</strong>te époque, antérieurs aux premières photos, comportent aussi <strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong>scriptions. Le géographe Elisée Reclus note, par exemple, en 1884, que «les femmes, qui ne se voilent jamais la face, ont en général les traits d'une régularité sévère, <strong>de</strong> grands yeux, Un nez aquilin, <strong>de</strong>s formes robustes, une longue chevelure nattée dont le noir s'harmonise avec-la nuance légèrement bistrée <strong>de</strong> la peau» (Le Kurdistan, recueil <strong>de</strong> textes choisis <strong>et</strong> présentés par Chris Kutschera [éd. Favre]). Au len<strong>de</strong>main <strong>de</strong> la Première Guerre mondiale <strong>et</strong> du démembrement <strong>de</strong> l'Empire ottoman, les Alliés envisagent <strong>de</strong> créer un Kurdistan indépen- ~h\ dant. Le traité <strong>de</strong> Sèvres, signé le 10 août 1920. préconise 1'« autonomie locale pour les régions où domine l'élément kur<strong>de</strong> ». Mais, après la victoire <strong>de</strong> Mustafa Kemal en Turquie, les Alliés reviennept sur leur décision. Le traité <strong>de</strong> Lausanne, signé en 1923, consacre la domination sur le Kurdistan <strong>de</strong> la Turquie, <strong>de</strong> l'Iran, <strong>de</strong> la Gran<strong>de</strong>-Br<strong>et</strong>agne (pour l'Irak) <strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong> la France (pour la Syrie). Pendant l'entre-<strong>de</strong>ux-guerres, <strong>de</strong>s révoltes écIatent. surtout en Turquie <strong>et</strong> au Kurdistan irakien. Après la Secon<strong>de</strong> Guerre mondiale, les Kur<strong>de</strong>s font brièvement l'expérience <strong>de</strong> l'autonomie avec la république <strong>de</strong> Mahabad. proclamée en Iran au tout début <strong>de</strong> l'année 1946, avec l'appui <strong>de</strong> l'URSS. Mais l'armée iranienne m<strong>et</strong> fin à c<strong>et</strong>te expérience en décembre <strong>de</strong> la même année. 84
