• More than 10,000 protestors
staged peaceful demonstrations
in Istanbul Wednesday to
protest clashes two years ago in
which 17 people were killed,
witnesses said. The demonstrators
marched through the Gazi
district of the city, the scene of
violent clashes between security
forces and mainly Alevite Turks
two years ago, chanting slogans.
They visited the cemetery where
the victims are buried.
The Alevites are members of
a local Shiite sect with liberal
political and religious views.
In the only reported incident,
demonstrators stoned a building,
believed to be owned by supporters
of the Islamist Welfare
