France urges Turkey to
continue human rights reforms
NAZLAN ERTAN
Paris - Turkish Daily News
• France, which has previously
detached itself from the remarks
made by Christian Democrats that
excluded Turkey from Europe, urged
Turkey to continue its democratic
and human rights reforms so this
country' s image in Europe will not
be clouded.
French Foreign Ministry deputy
spokesman Yves Doutriaux told
reporters that the question of rapprochement
between Turkey and the
European Union was a process that
was in the interest of both parties
and one that was supported by
France.
The spokesman said that the
recent vote to reduce the amount of
time police can detain people for
questioning had been welcomed by
France as a concrete step forward
following the promises given by
Foreign Minister Tansu Çi1ler during
the Rome meeting.
However, Doutriaux added that
Turkey should continue on this path,
particularly on the question of measures
that would guarantee freedom
of expression "which would put an
end to some judicial questions that
cloud the image of Turkey in
Europe."
"The question of human rights
reform is a process that must continue
along with the rapprochement
between Turkey and Europe which
we deeply want," he said.
France has detached itself from
the remarks of the Christian
Democrats and some German circles
that Turkey was not a candidate for
Europe.
Not directly coming out in favor
of full membership, French circles,
from Prime Minister Alain Juppe to
European Affairs Minister Michel
Barnier have said that Turkey should
continue its path toward Europe.
Quai d'Orsay, the lieu of the French
foreign ministry, said last week that
they continued to support the rapprochement
between Turkey and the
Union but hoped for some steps
from Turkey on democratization and
human rights.
